二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Scientists have found that Earth’s magnetic field(磁场)is weakening between Africa and South America, and this is creating problems for satellites and spacecraft.

According to The Independent report, scientists observed that an area known as the South Atlantic Anomaly(异常)has grown considerably in recent years, though the reason for the phenomenon isn’t clear yet. The change is causing huge problems for satellites and other spacecraft flying through the area, which are experiencing technical failures.

They reportedly used the data gathered by the satellites of the European Space Agency (ESA), and found that the area of the anomaly dropped in strength by more than 8 % between 1970 and 2020. The satellites are specifically designed to identify and measure the different magnetic signals that make up Earth’s magnetic field, allowing experts to spot areas that have weakened.

Researchers believe the weakening field may be a sign that the Earth could see a pole reversal(反转)—where the north and south pole switch places. It was earlier reported that one of Earth’s north pole is moving from its original place in Canada towards Siberia in Russia at a top speed of 50-60 km a year. The last time a “pole reversal” happened was 780,000 years ago.

Scientists warn this may lead to horrible consequences. The reversal will affect the Earth’s magnetic field which protects the planet from solar winds and harmful radiation. Communication and satellite systems also rely on the magnetic field to operate. The biggest influence of a magnetic field reversal will be on birds, tortoises and other creatures that use the field to navigate. North on a compass will also point to Antarctica rather than Canada.

Scientists say if the poles are in the process of reversing it will happen over several thousand years. However in 2018, a study published in the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that despite the weakening field, Earth’s magnetic field is probably not reversing. One thing is certain: it’s unlikely that the field will disappear completely.

【1】How did scientists conduct their study?

    A.By making field observations.

    B.By giving astronauts interviews.

C.By analyzing the data from the satellites.

D.By comparing the results of previous studies.

【2】What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.The reversal of magnetic poles.

    B.The strength of magnetic signals.

    C.The weakening of magnetic field.

    D.The increasing of magnetic force.

【3】Where does the text probably come from?

    A.A news report.

    B.A personal diary.

    C.An official document.

    D.A science fiction novel.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

A.Are Pole Reversals Certain to Appear?

B.Earth’s Magnetic Field Is Confusing Researchers

C.Will Earth’s Magnetic Field Disappear Completely?

D.Earth’s Magnetic Field Is Weakening and Affecting Satellites and Spacecraft

  • 22、We often share images or thoughts on social networks. Now, researchers at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) have developed an algorithm (算法) that can analyse the content people post online.

According to William Glasser’s Choice Theory, there are five basic needs: Survival, Power, Freedom, Belonging and Fun.

“These needs even have an influence on the images we choose to upload to our Instagram page,” explained Mohammad Mahdi Dehshibi, a researcher at the UOC.

The research team has spent two years working on a deep-learning model that identifies the five needs described by Glasser.

Glasser’s theory argues that each choice users make on social media does not respond to just one basic need — the multi-label approach of this study helps to clear it up. Dehshibi uses an example to explain this: “Imagine that a cyclist is riding up a mountain, and at the top, he can choose between sharing a selfie (自拍照) and a group photo. If he chooses the selfie, we perceive a need for Power, but if he chooses the other option, we can conclude that the person is not only looking for Fun but also a way to satisfy his need for Belonging.”

“Studying data from social networks that belong to non-English-speaking users could help build inclusive and diverse tools and models for addressing mental health problems in people with diverse cultural backgrounds,” Dehshibi adds.

The research team believe that their study can help improve preventive measures, ranging from identification to improved treatment when a person has been diagnosed with a mental health disorder.

Back in 2019, University of Vermont researchers developed an artificial-intelligence-based system that can detect signs of anxiety in the speech patterns of young children. Meanwhile, computer scientists from the University of Alberta, Canada, have developed algorithms that can detect and identify depression through people’s voices.

【1】What can the algorithm be used to do?

    A.Introduce William Glasser’s Choice Theory.

B.Create different databases for the research team.

C.Identify users’ basic needs from the content they share online.

D.Give people a tool to post images or thoughts on social networks.

【2】What does the example Dehshibi provides explain about the algorithm?

    A.How it works.

    B.Why it is useful.

    C.How it influences users.

D.Why it responds to Glasser’s theory.

【3】What does the research team think of their study?

A.It can suggest ways to improve social networks.

B.It is useful in handling mental health problems.

C.It is helpful in changing online users’ bad habits.

D.It can link people with diverse cultural backgrounds together.

【4】What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?

    A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

B.Provide some advice for the readers.

    C.Add some background information.

D.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

  • 23、A 63-year-old Chinese carpenter’s traditional skills have become an unexpected Internet hit as he creates woodwork with a single piece of wood, without glue, screws or nails. Wang De wen, known as “Grandpa Amu” on YouTube, has been praised as the modern day Lu Ban, a well-known Chinese structural engineer during the Zhou Dynasty, thanks to his rich carpentry(木工手艺) knowledge.

Grandpa Amu’s most popular video, which shows him making a delicate wooden arch bridge, has gone viral on YouTube, gaining more than 40 million views. “If you do something, you have to love it, and you have to be interested in it; however, being interested doesn’t mean there’s only happiness and no pain.” Grandpa Amu shared when talking about his excellent carpentry skills.

His most popular works include a folding stool, a model of the China pavilion from the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and an apple-shaped interlocking puzzle, known as a Lu Ban lock. • 24、Are you curious about how busy students are in the United States? Well, we are always busy. We have a lot of homework, but not as much as Chinese students. But we are not just busy working on our studies. As the saying goes, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”

First, we have after-school clubs. We finish school early, around 2:40 pm. Then we go to our clubs from 3 pm to 4 pm. There are several kinds of clubs, such as those for arts, sports and culture. I love after-school clubs because I can learn and socialize (社交).

Another kind of common after-school activity is playing on school sports teams. These teams train hard so they can win games against other teams during the competitive season. I have a friend who is on a girls’ basketball team. It is basketball season now, so she trains every day after school from 3 pm to 8 pm. There is just a one-hour break.

The school band’s rehearsal (排练) period is also held after school. I am in a school band. We rehearse once a week every Monday from 4 pm to 7 pm.

Finally, a lot of us do volunteer work on the weekends. We need 15 to 20 volunteer hours each semester (学期) in order to graduate. I often go to the food bank, which is a food donation organization, to work as a volunteer. I’m usually pretty tired after I finish volunteering each week. The work is sometimes boring, but I know I’m working for the good of society. So I enjoy it.

【1】Why does the author like after-school clubs?

    A.Because she finishes school early.

B.Because there are different kinds of clubs.

C.Because she doesn’t have anything better to do.

A.School activities are popular in the world.

B.American students learn more than Chinese students.

C.American students are busy with activities after school.

D.There are better after-school activities in the US than in China.
