二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、At 3:30 a.m. EDT on April 19, the Ingenuity helicopter --- which landed on Mars with the Perseverance rover (漫游者) in February --- took off from the Martian surface. More importantly, it circled for about 30 seconds, three meters above the surface and came right back down again.

It may not sound like a huge achievement, but it is. Ingenuity’s flight is the first powered flight of an aircraft on another planet. It marks the milestone in the story of human space exploration.

There are several technological challenges to conduct helicopter flight in another world. First, and more significantly, helicopters need an atmosphere to fly. The blades (桨叶), or “rotors” of a helicopter must spin (旋转) fast enough to generate a force called “lift”. But lift can only be generated in the presence of some kind of atmosphere. While Mars does have an atmosphere, it’s much, much thinner than Earth’s --- about 100 times thinner, in fact.

Flying Ingenuity in Mar’s atmosphere is therefore the equivalent (对等物) of flying a helicopter on Earth at a height of 100,000 feet. For reference, commercial aircraft fly between 30,000-40,000 feet above the Earth’s surface and the highest we’ve ever been in a helicopter on Earth is 42,000 feet.

Then there’s the Martian gravity to consider. It is about one-third the strength of gravity on Earth, which means we’d be able to lift Ingenuity with less power than would be required here. But while Mars’ gravity works to our advantage, this is cancelled out by the lack of atmosphere.

Even sending the signal for the flight to begin required a collection of advanced technology. While it only requires minutes for radio signals to travel between Earth and Mars, there was still a delay of hours for those signals to reach the helicopter.

All these things require Ingenuity to be light enough. Actually, it weighs less than 4 pounds, stands just 1.6 feet tall, and carries batteries, heaters and sensors. Besides, its two rotors had to spin about 2,400 revolutions per minute — five times faster than on Earth.

When in flight, Ingenuity’s shadow gives the impression of oversized, four-winged dragonfly. But the tiny craft is set to make an enormous impact on space exploration. “Sojourner’s technical exposure in 1997 gave NASA the guarantee of future pilots. What the Ingenuity team has done has given us a new chance. I think that’s the way we build the future,” said JPL director Michael Watkins. In addition, Watkins believes that Ingenuity is expected to lay the foundation for more antigravity spacecraft capable of exploring other worlds in a totally new way.

【1】Which of the following is of extraordinary significance according to the author?

A.The Ingenuity helicopter landed on Mars successfully

B.The Ingenuity helicopter made its first flight on Mars.

C.The Ingenuity helicopter stayed on Mars for a long time

D.The Ingenuity helicopter travelled between Mars and Earth.

【2】What can we learn about Mars’ atmosphere?

A.It can hardly provide a lift for Ingenuity to fly.

B.It’s not safe for Ingenuity to fly high and fast.

C.It’s too thin to keep Ingenuity stable in the air.

D.It can only raise Ingenuity to a height of 100,000 feet.

【3】What can we know from Paragraph 3 to Paragraph 6?

A.How Ingenuity performed during the flight

B.Why Ingenuity’s flight on Mars is a big deal

C.How Ingenuity survived the tough conditions of Mars

D.What contributed to the successful flight of Ingenuity

【4】Why did Michael Watkins mention Sojourner?

A.To explain how its mission differs from Ingenuity’s.

B.To show technological progress in Mars exploration.

C.To stress the significance of Ingenuity’s flight on Mars.

D.To illustrate the impact of space exploration on future flight.

  • 22、Math class usually requires a pencil and a calculator. At Loveland High School, students also need a hammer and a hard hat. Every year, about 150 students sign up for “Geometry in Construction.” Students, usually seniors, learn math concepts in the classroom, and then use that knowledge to build a small home.

“We basically started this because we knew what was currently going on was not working for all kids," said teacher Scott Burke, one of the founders of the program. "We really felt like we needed to create a model that was a little bit different, something that not only helped kids in standardized testing, but also gave them employable skills as well."

It was a decade ago when Burke started teaching the program. The students’ first project was a small, one-bedroom cabin for a private buyer. Over time, Loveland High School started a partnership with Habitat for Humanity and built several homes for low-income families. For the first time this year, students built tiny homes that will help house locals who don't have a proper place to live in.

Loveland High School also offers courses to older students who have completed the geometry program. Senior Haley Hansen is now helping supervise (监管)the current construction site and learning management skills. Hansen, who said she first chose to study on the program to hopefully learn math in an easier way, grew to love it more than she imagined. "A big reason I stuck with this program is really because of the community aspect. I actually get to be a part of the community and feel like, as a high schooler, I am making an impact. Being able to help a family in need is something life-changing for me," said Hansen.

Now, Burke's teaching other schools how to build similar math classes. He said the Loveland Geometry in Construction team has trained about 425 schools around the country in how to copy the program. Some are building houses; others are building smaller projects like cabins.

【1】What is a goal of the Geometry in Construction program?

A.To prepare students for their future work.

    B.To strengthen teacher-student relationships.

    C.To build some new classrooms.

D.To test students in a new model.

【2】Who did the students build homes for this year?

    A.The local homeless.

    B.Private buyers.

    C.Workers of Habitat for Humanity.

    D.Families on very low incomes.

【3】Why did Hansen come to love the program?

A.It improved her math score rapidly.

    B.It inspired her social responsibility.

C.It enabled her to understand other people.

D.It made her treasure her present life.

【4】What is Burke busy doing at present?

A.Teaching his students to build cabins.

    B.Designing a new math program.

C.Training new teachers for his school.

D.Spreading the idea of their program.

  • 23、   Heating and cooling equipment are the biggest users of energy in American homes. And homes are responsible for about one fourth of the nation’s total energy use. But there are surprisingly simple ways to deeply cut energy useits effect on the environment and its cost. David Peabody and his team at Peabody Architects design passive homes. He says the design of a passive house aims to reduce energy demand to its lowest possible level. Passive houses use no solargeothermal or wind energy equipment. But they are extremely energy efficient.

Mr Peabody says passive houses cut heating and cooling costs by about 90 percent. But what sets his design apart from other "green homes" is that it looks like any other home. Peabody Architects says it is building the first passive home in the Washington. D.C. area. But it will not he the last. In Arlington. Virginia. Roger Lin and his brother Eric are also building one. Roger Lin of Southern Exposure Homes explains that windows are sealed against leaks and have three layers of glass. The windows are airtight. On a cold winter daythe temperature inside the unfinished home is a comfortable 12 degreesor 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

David Peabody says you can find passive honks all over the world. DAVID PEABODY

"North Africafor examplehas a passive house community designing for very hot dry climates.” The first passive design was an apartment building in DarmstadtGermany. Two physicists helped develop it about 20 years ago. Passive houses use some specialized materials. These include precast concrete panels and insulation(隔热).They also need to have special air treatment systems. Supporters say they cost only about five or eight percent more than traditional homes. But they use 10 percent of the energy for heating and cooling.

1Which of the following is the advantage of passive houses?

    A.They are extremely energy efficient.

B.They look much like the other houses.

C.They cost much less than traditional houses.

D.They are more comfortable than other houses.

2People are building or living in passive homes in the following places EXCEPT

    A.Arlington B.Mexico

    C.North Africa D.Germany

3What can be implied in the passage?

A.Passive homes are specially built for winter use.

B.Passive homes can be found everywhere in the world.

C."Green homes" differ from traditional homes in their appearances.

D.The construction of passive homes takes advantage of high technology.

4What is the author’s attitude toward passive homes?

    A.Objective. B.Negative.

    C.Doubtful. D.Optimistic.

  • 24、Have you ever made contact with the creative spirit, that certain something hard to describe, but full of good—and sometimes great—ideas? It is more than an occasional great thought. When we feel the moving of the creative spirit, it brings to life a style of being: a lifetime filled with the desire to invent, to explore new ways of doing things, and to turn dreams into reality.

That flash of inspiration is the final moment of a process marked by unique stages—the basic steps in creative problem-solving. The first stage is preparation, when you look for any information that might be important. It's when you let your imagination run free.

But one barrier(障碍) is the inside voice of judgment that locks up our creative spirit within the limits of what we think acceptable. It's the voice that whispers to you, "They'll think I'm foolish," or "That will never work." But we can learn to recognize this voice of judgment and have the courage to discount its unhelpful advice.

Once you have thought about all the relevant(相关的) pieces and pushed your mind to the limits, you can let the problem remain and take in all you have gathered. It's a stage when much of what goes on occurs outside your focused awareness. As the saying goes, "You sleep on it."

We are more open to creative thoughts from the unknowing mind when we are not really thinking of anything. That is why daydreams are so useful in the search for creativity. Anytime you can just daydream and relax is useful in the creative process: a shower, long drives, a quiet walk, etc.

With luck, daydreaming will lead to a light turning on above your head, when all of a sudden the answer will come to you as if from nowhere. This is the popular stage—the one that usually gets all the glory and attention, the moment that people sweat and long for, the feeling "This is it!" But the thought alone is still not a creative act. The final stage is translation, when you take your creative thought and transform it into action; it becomes useful to you and others.

【1In Paragraph 1, “the moving of the creative spirit” probably means ________.

    A. preparation      B. exploration

    C. problem-solving     D. inspiration

【2】According to the article, what keeps us from creativity?

    A. Having less information to form a good idea.

    B. Relying on others during the creative process.

    C. Caring about other people’s opinions about us.

    D. Thinking about too many ideas at the same time.

【3What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?

    A. The unknowing mind is very difficult for us to understand.

    B. Creativity arrives when we aren’t focused on anything.

    C. Daydreaming is useless and has nothing to do with creativity.

    D. Showers, long drives and quiet walk are good for our bodies.

【4When does creativity become useful to us and others?

    A. When thought is turned into action.

    B. When people understand our ideas.

    C. When the popular stage is reached.

    D. When we think “This is it!”.

【5Which of the following would the author probably support?

    A. The creative spirit means an occasional great thought.

    B. Others’ voice of judgment allows us to ignore barriers.

    C. Creative problem-solving calls for barrier-free imagination.

    D. Daydreaming is sure to bring a sudden answer to a problem.
