  • 22、When I was young, I thought that boys and grown men shouldn’t cry. The tears were signs of being weak. A man isn’t supposed to be like that. This was even strengthened in my young mind with the popular song, Boys Don’t cry, in the early 1980s.

But just last June, I discovered that courage wasn’t all about trying to keep all the pain inside. Courage wasn’t all about trying to hide the tears. It was the opposite — the tears reinforced (加强) the heart’s courage. And I saw this in my father.

My 18-year-old sister eloped and with it, I saw how vulnerable (脆弱的) my father’s heart was. We were used to seeing him as a strong figure and an iron-willed father. For three days after my sister eloped, he wouldn’t talk. He would just sit quietly outside our house in the dark. On the fourth night, I sat beside him and asked him to tell me what he felt about everything.

It has been years since I have laid my hand on my father’s shoulder as we have drifted farther while I am growing up. That night, I sensed my father trying to control his pain and I wanted him to be able to let it out. We all cried over what had happened except him.

The simple touch and my words “Dad, it’s not your fault”broke my father’s dam. In the darkness, he began to cry. I felt his shoulders shaking as he whispered, “Where did I go wrong? All I ever wanted was for my children to grow up right. Why couldn’t your sister wait? How can she go away with such a boy?”

I understood then why he preferred to be in the dark. By being there, he hoped to spare his family’s feelings. His tears, though we didn’t see them before that night, were there all the same.

I saw his courage that night when my father cried with my hand on his shoulder, and understood his pain.

  • 23、   It was a crowded flight and a beautiful lady aged around 40 years boarded the flight as the passenger. She searched for her seat and found her seat was next to a black man.

She showed that she wasn’t in a hurry to take her seat as she found it too hard and awkward to sit next to a black man. Feeling disgusted, the beautiful lady called the air hostess and asked her to change her seat.

The airhostess was shocked to hear these hard words from the one who looked so dignified (庄重的) and composed.

The airhostess went in search an empty seat for the lady. The airhostess told the lady, “I’m afraid Madam, there is no vacant seat in the economy class and the flight is almost full! However, we do follow the policy to fulfil the desires of our passengers to the maximum extent possible. So, give me a minute. I will check with my captain and get back to you.”

The lady waited for a couple of minutes and the airhostess came.

The latter replied, “Madam, sorry for this inconvenience. We don’t want to make your journey unpleasant by making you sit next to someone with whom you aren’t comfortable. There is one seat available in the first class. Although we don’t allow any passenger to move from economy class to first class, to make you a happy customer, we are doing this for the first time in our company’s history. Our captain agreed to shift from economy class to first class!”

Just before the lady said any word as a reply, the air hostess humbly requested the black man and told him, “Dear sir, would you please shift your seat to first class? Please retrieve all your personal items from your seat and our captain would like to move you to first class as we don’t really want to have an uncomfortable journey sitting next to an unpleasant person, with an ugly mind!”

  • 24、Hollywood is getting more confident in the recovery of the US film market after Warner Bros’ monster mash Godzilla vs. Kong scored huge box office returns in early April. Meanwhile, Hollywood is also eyeing the Chinese market, with offerings including Universal’s action film Fast and Furious 9. However, they should realize that after the deadly pandemic, Chinese audiences have more interest in movies that tell a good Chinese story.

James Cameron’s documentary The Six and Marvel’s superhero film Black Widow are scheduled to be released on April 16 and July 9 respectively, and DC comics has produced a new superhero, Monkey Prince, based on the Chinese legendary Money King. Obviously, Hollywood is hoping to earn big in the world’s largest film market.

But looking back to the Hollywood blockbusters in 2020, their box office performance in China was a big disappointment. According to China’s ticketing platform Maoyan, Disney’s Mulan, DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 and Warner Bros’ Tenet earned 278 million yuan ($42 million), 167 million yuan and 456 million yuan, respectively.

Meanwhile, homegrown Chinese films are getting more popular, which can be seen from the box office during China’s Lunar New Year holiday in 2021 and the Qingming Festival. Chinese feature film Sister, which deals with sister-brother relationships, quickly defeated Godzilla vs. Kong during China’s Qingming Festival holiday.

Many observers said that Chinese audiences want to watch films that tell a good Chinese story, and the tear-jerking comedy Hi, Mom is a perfect example. The film tells a warm story of a mother-daughter relationship and has grossed 5.397 million yuan as of Thursday, according to Maoyan.

Maybe it is because of the COVID-19 epidemic that Chinese people are turning their eyes more toward their own stories. If Hollywood still cannot really understand and respect Chinese culture and just randomly mixes some Chinese elements into their films, it will lose a large amount of its fans in China.

【1】What does the underlined expression in the second paragraph refer to?

    A.The Chinese film market.

    B.The US film market.

    C.The Hollywood film market.

    D.The Maoyan film market.

【2】What did Chinese audiences think of the Hollywood blockbusters released in 2020 in China?

A.The films earned big money in the box office.

B.The films defeated these homegrown films in China.

C.The films failed to meet the Chinese audiences’ expectation.

D.The films were criticized for mixing Chinese elements into their films.

【3】Why is the film Hi, Mom seen as a good example of successful films nowadays?

A.It is about a warm story between a mother and a daughter.

B.It is about a story that makes you laugh and cry at the same time.

C.It mixes many Chinese family elements into the film successfully.

D.It satisfies many people’s interest in a film to tell a good Chinese story.

【4】How can Hollywood make a change to keep its fans in China?

A.Try to base its story on Chinese legendary.

B.Mix many Chinese elements into their films.

C.Show true understanding and respect for Chinese culture.

D.Make the films to solve the mother-daughter relationships.
