21、More and more pupils are giving teachers presents, but the practice only creates insecurity in parents and staff.
I’ve certainly noticed some pupils being feverishly overgenerous of late. Last year, I received not one bottle of wine but four for helping a disaffected pupil through his GCSEs. By and large, my colleagues report the gifts differing along gender lines. Gentlemen get ties, mugs, booze and, if they’re really lucky, tickets to football matches. The ladies are often presented with flowers, jewels, chocolates and so on.
When my son was at private school, I noticed there was a real competitiveness between the students about giving presents to teachers, with expensive baskets from fancy stores and huge bouquets being handed out on the last days of term. Since my wife and I only let my son give thank-you cards, it was clear we were not “classy”. Now he is at an inner-city primary, we’ve noticed that this kind of nonsense seems to have more or less disappeared. For one thing, there isn’t that kind of money floating around – but there isn’t that kind of competitive culture either.
Personally, I think gifts to teachers should be banned beyond the thank-you card they cause many more problems than they solve, creating insecurity in both parents and staff. Perhaps the recession and the lack of money in people’s pockets might be a good excuse for the government to issue some guidelines to schools that gifts shouldn’t be accepted by teachers.
The gifts that I really value are the cards which say a genuine thank you. I still keep them in a file at home.

22、The DentalSlim Diet Control, developed by researchers at New Zealand’s University of Otago, is a device (设备)fitted to patients’ upper and lower back teeth that uses locks to prevent them from properly opening their mouths and eating solid foods.
“It allows the wearer to open their mouths only about 2mm, forcing them to a liquid diet, but it allows free speech and doesn’t limit breathing," the University of Otago said. " Participants in a trial lost an average of 6.36kg in two weeks and were delighted to continue with their weight loss journey.”
Professor Paul Brunton, lead researcher for the DentalSlim Diet Control, noted in the same statement that the device is fitted by a dentist, and the device can be untied by the user with a special tool in case of an emergency, and can be repeatedly fitted and removed. It represents, in his words, “a reversible (可逆的),economical and attractive alternative to operations". “The fact is," Professor Brunton said, “there are no harmful consequences with this device."
Many disagreed. Within hours of the University of Otago announcing the device on Twitter, many people called the device "evil" "hateful" and "disturbing”. Others pointed out that hyperadiposity is often the product of complex factors including biology and social disadvantage, and not something that can be solved by simply forcing people’s mouths shut. More than a handful described the DentalSlim Diet Control as a “dark device".
The University of Otago Twitter account has posted several tweets that sought to better explain their position. "To clarify, the intention of the device is not intended as a quick or long-term weight-loss tool; rather it is aimed to assist people who need to take operations and who cannot have the operation until they have lost weight. After two or three weeks they can have the device removed. They could then have a period with a less limited diet and then go back into treatment." This may also be the reason why they’re calling it a “world-first” device.
The paper admitted that participants said they "occasionally had discomfort and felt that life in general was less satisfying”, but concluded that participants "tolerated the device for a two-week period with satisfactory weight loss."
【1】How did the device achieve its purpose?
A.By being fitted to patients’ teeth.
B.By allowing patients to speak more.
C.By locking patients’ mouths totally.
D.By forcing patients to limit the foods.
【2】What is the advantage of this device?
A.It’s safe.
B.It’s delicate.
C.It’s professional.
D.It’s environmentally friendly.
【3】What does the underlined word "hyperadiposity" mean in paragraph 4?
A.Being weak.
B.Being fat.
C.Being poor.
D.Being sad.
【4】Who would accept this kind of device?
A.The people who want to gain weight.
B.The people who want to keep slim.
C.The people who are too heavy to take operations.
D.The people who can tolerate discomfort for a short time.
23、When you have work to do, would you rather work at home, in an office, or at a café? For many, the answer would be a café. There is no doubt that the caffeine in coffee can provide some energy to help us work. 【1】 Therefore, it’s no surprise that cafes are often full of people working hard on their laptops.
【2】 Some scientists suggest that background music, people chatting, or the sound of making drinks actually helps people improve their concentration. These noises provide just enough stimulation to help people focus on a task without becoming annoyed or letting their minds wander.
Another theory has to do with social psychology. Research has found that people are often more productive when they have an audience. In a setting like a café, people may be encouraged to increase their focus when they are surrounded by others who are also hard at work. 【3】
For many writers, cafés are the best places to go when an important deadline is coming up. The Manuscript Writing Cafe in Japan has decided to target writers that need to get their work done quickly. 【4】 That means comic book artists and authors as well as songwriters are also welcome.
What makes the Manuscript Writing Café even more unique is that customers have to announce their writing goals for the day to the cafe staff. 【5】 In other words, work slowly and you’ ll pay for it. What’s more, they aren’t allowed to leave until they have completed their work for the day.
A.Why are some people more productive in cafés?
B.This special café opened in Tokyo in April 2022.
C.The brain might consider others working nearby as competitors.
D.Customers are also charged for each half-hour they stay at the café.
E.But on top of that, a lot of people just seem to work more efficiently there.
F.It won’t let customers take a seat unless they do a writing or artistic project.
G.The staff will check on their progress every hour and ensure that they’ re being productive.
