二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A world-famous Canadian author, Margaret Atwood, has created the world’s first long-distance signing device(装置), the LongPen.

After many tiring……from city to city, Atwood thought there must be a better way to do them . She hired some technical experts and started her own company in 2004. Together they designed the LongPen. Here’s how it works: The author writes a personal message and signature on a computer tablet(手写板) using a special pen. On the receiving end, in another city, a robotic arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The author and fan can talk with each other via webcams(网络摄像机) and computer screens

Work on the LongPen began in Atwood’s basement(地下室). At first, they had no idea it would be as hard as it turned out to be. The device went through several versions, including one that actually had smoke coming out of it. The investing finally completed, teat runs w ere made in Ottawa, and the LongPen was officially launched at the 2006 London Book Fair. From here , Atwood conducted two transatlantic book signings of her latest book for fans in Toronto and New York City.

The LongPen produces a unique signature each time because it copies the movement of the author in real time. It has several other potential applications. It could increase credit card security and allow people to sign contracts from another province. The video exchange between signer and receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal documents are used.

“It’s really fun”, said the owner of a bookstore, who was present for one of the test runs. “Obviously you can’t shake hands with the author but there are chances for a connection that you don’t get from a regular book signing..

The response to the invention has not been all favorable. Atwood has received criticism from authors who think she is trying to end book tours. But she said, “It will be possible to go to places that you never got sent to before because the publishers couldn’t  afford it.”

1Why did Atwood decide to invent the LongPen?

A.To set up her own company.

    B.To win herself greater popularity.

C.To write her books in a new way.

D.To make book signings less tiring

    2How does the LongPen work?

A.I copies the author’s signature and prints it on a book.

B.It signs a book while receiving the author’s signature.

C.The webcam sends the author’s signature to another city.

D.The fan uses it to copy the author’s signature himself.

3What do we know about the invention of the LongPen?

A.It has been completed but not put into use.

B.The basement caught fire by accident.

C.Some versions failed before its test run.

D.The designers were well-prepared for the difficulty.

4How could the LongPen be used in the future?

    A.To draft legal documents.

    B.To improve credit card security

C.To keep a record of the author’s ideas.

D.To allow author and fan to exchange videos

5What could be inferred from Paragraphs 5 and 6?

A.Atwood doesn’t mean to end book tours.

B.Critics think the LongPen is of little use

C.Bookstore owners do not support the LongPen

D.Publishers dislike the LongPen for its high cost

  • 22、Most of the time, people wear hats to protect themselves from harsh weather conditions. Hats are also worn to show politeness and as signs of social position. But nowadays, hats, especially women's hats, are much more than that. More exactly, hats have changed into fashion and style symbols by many movie stars. What's more, people now consider many different features(特点) when choosing even a simple hat. Many designers point out that, when choosing the right hat, it's important to consider the color of your skin as well as your hair, your height, and the shape of your face.

First of all, the color of the hat should match the color of your skin and hair. For instance, black hats should be avoided if you are dark skinned. If a purple hat is placed on top of red hair, one will look as attractive as a summer flower. Second, the height of the hat is also an important point. Tall women should not go for hats with tall crowns, just as short women should choose hats with upturned brims to give the look of height. Third, and most importantly, the shape of the face decides the kind of hat one should pick. A small, gentle hat that fits the head looks good on a small face. However, women with big, round faces should choose a different style.

As the saying goes, "Fine feathers make fine birds." A good hat can not only help your dress but also support your features, so why not choose the best possible one next time you want to be in public?

【1】What does the underlined word “harsh” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?

    A. good  B. strange  C. poor D. different

2According to the article, which of the following women would look most attractive?

    C. A tall woman who wears a hat with a huge upturned brim.

    D. A small dark-skinned woman who wears a black hat with a tall crown.

3What does the last paragraph suggest?

    A. Hats are worn on the head to keep warm.

    B. Hats can help you look better in public.

    C. Hats are not as important as character.

    D. Hats can make you look much taller.

4What is the best title for the article?

    A. How to Show Your Social Position.

    B. How to Improve Your Features.

    C. How to Choose a Proper Hat.

    D. How to Design a Nice Hat.

  • 23、One of the best ways to improve our communities is through volunteer work. According to a report from United Nations Volunteers, it is estimated that 140 million people volunteer in every nation and in a variety of settings. Forbes reports that research has shown that volunteering can greatly benefit volunteers. These benefits include an increased sense of productivity, the development of new skills, resume-building experience, improved physical health, and the emotional rewards that come with others appreciating you and your efforts. Here are some types for you to join in local communities.

    Sports volunteering

You don’t need to be good at the sport in which you wish to volunteer. Some of the most important characteristics include enthusiasm and interest. Your sports organisation should put you through any qualifications that you need to carry out your role. Most people volunteer on average two or three hours a week, but there are also opportunities to volunteer more or less often.

    Support the Red Cross

Red Cross is an organization that helps with disaster relief, blood donations, and more. Being a Red Cross volunteer provides experience in the medical field and allows you to help those in need. The Red Cross responds to disasters nationwide and helps communities recover. It may be difficult to see damaged communities, but you could have a part in assisting them to recover. In addition, you may meet new friends along the way.

    Organize a Summer Reading Program

Summer reading programs are one way to keep children’s reading skills active and their mind fresh during the whole summer vacation. Organizing a summer reading program is an excellent way to get kids to read a book, broaden their vocabulary, and learn something new. You can share your favorite books, offer prizes to children who meet their goals, and turn the program into a friendly competition, all while teaching children the importance of reading.

  • 24、   Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this massive metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 but it was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.

But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. The idea to change the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a community meeting to decide how to decide the fate of the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a half of wild flowers growing in the middle of the cityand they realized that the High Line had potential (潜力) to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected.

The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies with wonderful city views. Other areas have wide lawns and walkways planted with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years—a railway line overgrown with weeds.

    1What does the underlined part“a dead weight”mean?

A.something with potential to be better B.something with historical interest

C.something useless which slows progress D.something which is a danger to people

2Why did David and Hammond want to save the High Line at first?

A.They were interested in improving the city. B.They thought it would make a good park.

C.They wanted to reopen the train line. D.They thought it had historical value.

3We can infer from the last paragraph that the park is___________.

A.various in its designs B.like natural countryside

C.similar to what it used to be D.useful to learn different plants

4What is the text mainly about?

  • 26、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a Saturday in June, 1988. Out of a 16-year-old’s early tiring summer, I had set up a tent (帐篷) in our rural yard and intended to sleep in it, but I stayed in the house to finish watching the Lakers’ play-off game. It was almost midnight and Dad had been asleep upstairs for hours when someone knocked at the front door. It never happened to me not to answer it.

To my surprise, it was a girl about my age with a bloody cut on her head. “Hi. I’m Maria. What’s wrong with you?” I asked her with concern. Awkward and embarrassed, she replied: “I’m Jane. I…” she hesitated and then asked me carefully, “May I stay here for the night? I’ll be off tomorrow morning” Seeing her uneasiness, I comforted her, “Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tonight.” I invited her into the house. Looking around, Jane appeared to have calmed down. “Let me treat your injury first,” I said and she agreed.

I cleaned and bandaged (包扎) her injured head and then gave her some bread and meat to eat. “Want to sleep in my tent?" I asked her and she nodded. Having left her in the bathroom, I went to look for another sleeping bag When I returned, Jane was seated on the sofa, her face clouded by sadness. Walking across the dark yard, I went into tent with Jane. We lay down side by side. Caught by curiosity and concern, I turned over again again, wondering what had happen to her and how she came here. Jane seemed to have sensed that and started to speak. Jane’s father died of cancer years before. Her mother did some cleaning jobs to raise her. Money was tight but her mother tried to do what she could to satisfy Jane. Several weeks before, Jane accidentally saw a fine white dress in the store window, which she fell in love with at first sight. She excitedly told her mother about that, who promised to buy it as her birthday gift. From then on, Jane was looking forward to it.
