22、China is going green. In order to reduce air pollution and oil-shortages, car makers have announced their plans to develop hybrid(混合燃料)cars for the Chinese market.Toyota’s hybrid car Prius will be ready to drive in China this week.Let’s have a look at the new car.
Any vehicle is a hybrid car when it combines two or more sources of power.Hybrid cars have special engines, which are smaller than traditional gasoline engine. They run at 99 percent of their power when the car is going at a steady speed. A specially designed battery motor provides extra power for running up hills or when extra speed-up is needed.
Step into a Prius, and turn on the engine. The first thing you notice is how much quieter it is than a traditional car.At this point, the car’s gasoline engine is at rest. The electric motor will provide power until the car reaches about 24 kilometers per hour.If you stay at a low speed, you are effectively driving an electric car, with no gasoline being used, and no waste gas gives off.
The computer makes the decision about when to use a gas engine, when to go electric, and when to use a combination of the two.If you go over 24 kilometers per hour, when you step on the gas, you are actually telling the computer how fast you want to go.
The electronic motor recharges automatically using a set of batteries. When driving at a high speed, the gasoline engine not only powers the car, but also charges the batteries.
Any time you use the brake, the electric motor will work like a generator(发电机)and produce electricity to recharge the batteries. As a result, the car’s batteries will last for around 200,000 miles.

23、 Mid-Autumn Festival is the second grandest festival in China after Chinese New Year. It’s a time when families come together to appreciate the full moon and eat mooncakes during the festival. In fact, besides these two traditions, there are many others.
1. Watching the tide
In ancient times, watching the tide on the Qiantang River in East China’s Zhejiang province was another grand event of Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been recorded in detail since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220). Many famous ancient poets, like Su Shi in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) wrote about the grand occasion in their poems.
2. Making colorful lanterns
On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, people usually make colorful lanterns to decorate th beautiful night. They also make Kongming lanterns, which can fly because the burning candles h t the air in the lanterns. Children write good wishes on the lanterns and let them fly up into the sky.
3. Burning pagodas (佛塔)
When night falls, people gather together in an empty place, and pick up broken bricks and tiles to pile up several pagodas. The pagodas are hollow and are filled with firewood. Then the firewood in the pagodas is lit, and the red flames rise and sparks explode, through which people express the joy of harvest in autumn.
4. Stealing vegetables
Among the Dong ethnic group in Central China’s Hunan province, it is the custom for young ladies to steal vegetables on Mid-Autumn Festival night. Whoever eats vegetables with sweet dew on this night will be healthy and happy. Also, women and girls express their adoration to their favorite young men by this way.
5. Drinking osmanthus-flavored wine
Osmanthus-flavored wine is a gift during this season. Drinking Osmanthus fragrance wine at Mid-Autumn Festival implies sweetness, wealth and luck, and prosperity of the family.

24、Who're happier, men or women?Research shows it's a complex question and that asking whether males or females are happier isn't really that helpful, because basically, happiness is different for women and men.
Women's happiness has been declining for the past 30 years, according to recent statistics. And research shows that women are twice as likely to experience depression compared with men.Gender(性别) differences in depression are well confirmed and studies have found that biological, psychological and social factors contribute to the difference.
Early studies on gender and happiness found men and women were socialized to express different feelings.Women are more likely to express happiness, warmth and fear, which help with social bonding and appear more consistent with the traditional role as a primary caregiver, while men display more anger, pride and disrespect, which are more consistent with a protector and provider role.
Recent research suggests that these differences are not just socially, but also genetically related.Studies have looked into these findings further and discovered that females use more areas of the brain containing mirror neurons(镜像神经元)than males when they process feelings.Mirror neurons allow us to experience the world from other people's view, to understand their actions and intentions. This may explain why women can experience deeper sadness.Women tend to experience more negative feelings, such as more guilt, shame and to a lesser degree, embarrassment.
Psychologically it seems men and women differ in the way they process and express feelings. With the exception of anger, women experience feelings more strongly and share their feelings more openly with others.Studies have found in particular that women express more appreciation﹣which has been linked to greater happiness. This supports the theory that women's happiness is more dependent on relationships than men's.

25、 Research has shown that two-thirds of human conversation is taken up not with discussion of the cultural or political problems of the day, not heated debates about films we've just watched or books we've just finished reading, but plain and simple ______.

So why are we keen on gossiping? Are we just natural ______, of both time and words? Or do we talk a lot about nothing in particular simply to avoid facing up to the really important issues of life? Dunbar ______ the traditional view that language was developed by the men at the early stage of social development in order to organize their manly hunting activities more effectively. Instead, he suggests that language evolved among women. We don't spend two-thirds of our time gossiping just because we can talk, argues Dunbar—______, he goes on to say, language evolved specifically to allow us to gossip.
Dunbar arrived at his cheery theory by studying the ______ of the higher primates(灵长类动物)like monkeys. By means of grooming--cleaning the fur by brushing it, monkeys form groups with other individuals on whom they can rely for support in the event of some kind of conflict within the group or______ from outside it.
As we human beings evolve from a particular branch of the primate family, Dunbar ______ that at one time in our history we did much the same. Grouping together made sense because the bigger the group, the greater the ______ it provided; on the other hand, the bigger the group, the greater the stresses of living close to others. Grooming helped to ______ the pressure and calm everybody down.
But as the groups got bigger and bigger, the amount of time spent in grooming activities also had to be ______ to maintain its effectiveness. Clearly, a more ______ kind of grooming was needed, and thus language evolved as a kind of vocal(有声的)grooming which allowed humans to develop relationship with ever-larger groups by exchanging information over a wider network of individuals than would be possible by one-to-one ______ contact.
