21、A series of activities were held in Beijing to celebrate World Book Day in April. Some focused on helping children form a reading habit. To help parents select the suitable reading materials, a book list for children compiled (编纂) by experts was recently released at the Chinese Museum of Women and Children.
The list called Kingdom of Little Bookworms is divided into two parts - one for children aged 3 to 6, and the other for those above 6. “We still don’t have an official system of reading levels in China,” says Bai Bing, an experienced children’s book writer. More than half of the 35 books recommended for children under age 6 are picture books in simple language, while the other 42 books for older children deal with wider topics and require better comprehension ability.
During the book list’s release, experts also emphasized parents’ role in cultivating children’s reading habit. “At home, if parents watch TV and are on gadgets all the time, it’s hard to imagine that their children will have a good reading habit,” says Wang Zhigeng, director of the children’s book section at the National Library of China. “Action speaks louder than words. If parents themselves like reading and buying books, the children will imitate — and reading will become a family’s culture.”
Wang points out that reading aloud for the children is important. He says: “To read out loud the story with your emotions, a clear voice and body language — to convey your feelings to your children. It will help the development of children’s abilities of empathy and comprehension.”

22、 Over the past few months, COVID-19 has caused great uncertainty around the world affecting people's lives in all aspects.Education is also greatly affected. With students all turning to online instruction, live-streamed classes have become popular among schools and universities. 【1】
In China, the use of e-learning is unusual not only in size but also in depth. 【2】 For another, it proves how modern technology changes the way students are educated and encourages further research and development of educational technology to introduce virtual communities between students and teachers.
In fact, online instruction as an alternative teaching mode has been expanding rapidly in recent years. Many Chinese start-ups focus on AI applications in online courses, and various online educational platforms are set up.【3】 The online education platform MOOC,where a wide variety of courses is available, has attracted the world's top universities to upload and share resources with students around the world.
Compared with formal instruction, online courses save abundant costs and create a flexible teaching mode(模式)-homeschooling,especially during a crisis. 【4】For example, rural students with no access to the Internet and television might be left behind in this new mode. When e-learning becomes the only solution for delivering knowledge, the existing divide could be widened, further deepening education inequality. Also, the quality of teaching becomes heavily dependent on uncertain factors, such as a stable connection to the Internet and technical skills.
【5】Yet,the pandemic(流行病)has undoubtedly affected the teaching style in a sweeping manner and given educators around the world plenty of time and space to think about the alternative educational modes.
A.However, online teaching has its own disadvantages.
B.The traditional face-to-face teaching style has been challenged.

23、 The Mississippi is a romantic river whose relationship with man goes back beyond its discovery by the Spaniards in the 16th century. Indians used the river as a highway and as a source of food, and it was they who gave it its name —'misi', meaning 'great' and 'sipi' meaning 'water'.
When the length of its great tributary (支流), the Missouri, is added to it, the Mississippi becomes the third longest river in the world. From the source of the Missouri to the tip of the delta (三角洲), it is 2,480 miles long. Its head waters have been compared to a healthy, thick-branched tree, healthy because its main branches, or tributaries, are navigable for most of their length.
The Indians paddled up and down the river in their canoes. The first streamer was launched in 1810. It had a single great paddle-wheel at the stern, and was known as a 'paddle-wheeler.' Throughout the 19th century these unique ships were queens of the Mississippi. They have become part of American history and American literature. The noted writer, Mark Twain, immortalized (使不朽) the river in his greatest novel, Huckleberry Finn, and Oscar Hammerstein immortalized it in his song, Old Man River, which was made popular all over the world by the great black American singer and actor, Paul Robeson.

24、Like humans, animals need sleep too. A big problem for animals in the wild is keeping their enemies away while they sleep. Animals take care of this problem in different ways.
Anolis lizards live in many areas including tropical rainforests. They often sleep on leaves at the end of long branches. A leaf might seem like a strange bed, but it works like an alarm. If a hungry snake wiggles a branch, the lizard wakes up and leaps to safety.
Chimpanzees take their sleep very seriously. Each day, a chimpanzee builds itself a new, comfortable bed to sleep in. Scientists believe chimpanzees carefully choose a tree that is strong, where they build a nest using branches and leaves.
Parrotfish live among coral reefs in oceans. Every night, parrotfish usually sleep close to the rock in sheltered places. Some parrotfish go one step further by quickly making a slime layer that covers their whole body. This covering acts like a sleeping bag that provides a barrier against danger.
Bottle-nosed dolphins need to sleep, but they have to be on the ocean’s surface to breathe. They also need to watch over their young. What do they do? While half of the dolphin’s brain sleeps, the other half stays awake. After a while, the sleeping half wakes up while the other half snoozes.
Sooty terns have the most amazing sleep. They nest on islands. When they are not nesting, they live for many years in the sky and on the sea’s surface. When and where can they sleep? Scientists believe they are able to sleep while they are flying, staying out of the reach of enemies.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the busy city--New York, such an amazing thing ever happened. On a cold Friday night,an artist stood at the gate of a subway station, playing his violin. The young violinist was a student at an arts college named Joseph. who did so every day in order to earn his tuition fees. He planned to attend advanced studies in Vienna and had booked the flight the next morning. Though the music was great, people were quickly going home. Joseph was playing his last chapter when a middle-aged man looking pretty excited slowed down and put 50 dollars into his hat, for which Joseph was grateful.
The next night, the young artist came to the gate of the subway station as usual, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. Different from the day before, he took out a large piece of paper, laid it on the ground, and put some stones on it. Then he began playing the violin.
Before long, the young artist was surrounded by many passers-by, who were all attracted by the words on that paper. It said, “ Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an unexpected thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it as soon as possible. "
It caused great excitement. They were dying to know what the unexpected thing could be. After about half an hour. a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry, rushed through the crowd to the violinist, grabbed his shoulders and said, “ Yes, it's you. You did come here. I knew that you are an honest man and would certainly come here."
The young violinist asked calmly, "Are you Mr. George Sang?"
The man nodded, Then the violinist asked, “Did you lose something?"
“Lottery(彩票)! It's lottery!" replied the man.
The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang's name was written. “ Is it?” he asked.
George nodded immediately, saying. " Yes, it is! Yesterday, I accidentally dropped it when I put the money in your hat." Words finished, he seized the lottery ticket and kissed it,and then he danced with Joseph.
