二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As we all know, science is developing faster than ever before. Recently, NASA astronaut Scott Kelly showed a photo of the orange zinnia (百日菊) online. It is the first flower to ever bloom (开花) in space and has attracted much attention all over the world. This may be the most exciting news in the field of science. The zinnia in the picture is so beautiful and looks similar to that on earth. Kelly cared for it for more than a month.

Scientists chose the zinnia flower species because it has a longer growth cycle. As a result, it can help them understand how plants flower and develop in microgravity (微重力)

“While the plants haven’t grown perfectly,” said Gioia Massa, the NASA science team leader, “I think we have gained a lot from this, and we are learning both more about plants and how to better operate between the ground and the station.”

This was not the first time that scientists had tried to grow the zinnia in space. Other astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) began growing the colorful flowers last year. However, the zinnia leaked (渗漏) water out of the tips of the leaves. What was worse, the spread of bacteria was wrecking its growth. Kelly then took over the operation and began taking care of the zinnia as he would in his own garden.

The ISS also successfully grew red romaine lettuce in July 2015. Kelly even took a bite of the harvested plants and posted the photo. NASA’s new experiment using the plant growth system will be started later. Astronauts will try to grow Chinese cabbage, dwarf tomatoes and so on.

【1】Why does the zinnia draw public attention?

C.It is the first life to be found in space.

A.The zinnia grows well beyond her expectation.

B.Many difficulties exist in space exploration.

    D.This experiment is completely different.

【3】What does the underlined word “wrecking” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Strengthening.

    B.Destroying.

  • 22、At least three reasons stand out why a girl should acquire a college education: it can ensure her greater financial gain, better patterns of family life, and richer personal resources.

Initially, the girl who obtains a college education is likely to find a better occupation and make more money. A typist, for example, may earn no more than $2,000 a month. 【1】. In a sense, salary varies with the level of education.

【2】. For instance, she’ll be able to have a better interpersonal communication particularly with her husband, since she is more aware of reasonable ways of thinking and livelihood than the woman who drops out of school in the tenth grade, spends most of her time washing diapers and develops an addiction to electronic devices like TV, the cell phone, etc.

Additionally, a woman with a higher education can have an effect on her children’s growth. Nothing makes a cooler mom than one that is involved in the children’s hobbies by taking an intelligent, informed interest in it. 【3】. They will keep a distance from their children’s space, privacy, and independence and trust that they can have a strong relationship without knowing every aspect of their lives.

Eventually, perhaps the most important of all is the fact that a college education gives a woman richer personal resources than she would otherwise have. 【4】. The unique circles based on her education, of people from art, science, philosophy and so forth, are bound to enrich a woman’s life.

If you are not one of those who want to be a kept woman or take money from your parents or your husband, you will need certain skills that of course can be obtained at a university or college. 【5】, as is mentioned.

A.So a woman can leave the kitchen and diapers

B.Every woman should try to get a college education

C.It gives her a taste for ideas and a knowledge of the world

D.Next, a girl with further education can get a good marriage

E.Secondly, a college-educated girl probably has a better family life

F.Moreover, a well-educated mom knows how to show respect for her children

G.A research chemist in contrast, may make a profit of more than $ 150 000 a year

  • 23、   Most people enjoy hearing a bit of background music while eating at home, or while dining out at their favorite restaurants. Recent studies have shown that the loudness of music can have an observable effect on our food choices. Certain tunes(曲调)and melodies can even influence our perception(感知)of the food when we are eating it.

One study was led by Dipayan Biswas of the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business. In his research, Biswas played the same music for diners in a cafe, but at volumes of 50 decibels(分贝)on some days and 70 decibels on others. On the days when music was played at 70 decibels, diners often ordered less healthy, higher-calorie foods. In comparison, the diners who listened to tunes at lower decibels made healthier choices. The results, Biswas thought, were due to human general need to look for comfort when they were stressed out. To further prove his ideas, a similar study was repeated, this time in grocery stores. The results were the same as the first. The louder the music, the more cookies, chips, and sugary drinks shoppers bought.

Another study that examined this phenomenon was conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford. The team looked at whether loud, fast music might increase the perceived spiciness(辛辣)of dishes. Not surprisingly, participants who listened to music containing fast drumbeats and the sounds of high decibels reported that food was spicier and had stronger flavors up to 10%. The researchers called the strange phenomenon "sonic seasoning". It's no wonder that such music is often played by restaurants that will be serving up spicy foods for their diners.

1What's the purpose of Dipayan Biswas' study?

A.To tell high decibels from low decibels.

B.To explore effects of music on food choices.

C.To find tunes and melodies diners like most.

D.To observe the effect of unhealthy food and drinks.

2What made people choose unhealthier foods according to Biswas?

    A.The report about unhealthier foods.

B.Their habits of more various orders.

C.The love for sounds with high decibels.

D.Their desire for comfort under pressure.

3Why is loud and fast music played in restaurants when spicy foods are served?

A.To reduce the flavor of the food.

B.To add fast drumbeats and sounds.

C.To change diners' feelings about food.

D.To test a phenomenon "sonic seasoning".

  • 24、   German cities are redrawing road markings to create new cycle paths for the duration of the Covid-19 lockdown, as cyclists demand more space to physically distance on their way to work.

Local authorities in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin trialled (试行)a temporary widening of two cycle paths on 27 March, arguing it would help cyclists keep the required 1.5-metre distance apart while car traffic was down owing to Germany’s coronavirus (冠状病毒)restrictions.

On Friday, the council declared the plan a success because it had improved cycling safety while not blocking traffic.

The council said it had used removable tape and mobile signs to mark out the widened paths, which can be removed when the current restrictions on movement are lifted.

Residents in 133 other German cities have formally submitted applications for similar pop-up bike paths to their local authorities on the back of a campaign by Environmental Action Germany (DUH), an environmental NGO.

The campaign group cites new research linking air pollution to  higher  coronavirus  death rates as an argument for redrawing road signs across the country. “The coronavirus is showing us that clean air is necessary,” said DUH’s chair, Jürgen Resch. “It is now especially important to temporarily make  it more important for people to move safely on their bikes. This will help improve air quality, enable exercise in fresh air while keeping a safe distance and avoid unnecessary accidents.”

In Germany, bike repair shops are allowed to work because of the Covid-19 going on. Three federal states, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, have allowed bike shops to stay open.

1Why did German cities decide to widen temporary cycle paths?

A.To avoid traffic jams. B.To go to work conveniently.

C.To reduce air pollution. D.To keep proper distance between cyclists.

2What does the underlined word “pop-up” in paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Substituted B.Limited. C.Expanded. D.Separated.

3What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Special measures is taken to raise the production of bicycles. B.All transportation means except bicycling are forbidden.   C.The use of bicycles can stop the Covid-19 from going on.   D.Bicycle riding is encouraged to lower the risk of gathering.
