  • 21、Elizabeth’s Second!

In 60 years, the Queen has never put a foot wrong in public. And for the last 24 of them, it turns out she’s had a secret weapon the nice Ella Slack. The former BBC manager has, unknown to anyone except a handful of key advisers, spent the last quarter of a century acting as the Queen’s official stand-in at rehearsals (排练) for royal events. The 69-year-old has never accepted a penny for her royal service, considering it “a pleasure and an honour” to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the Queen. “How many people in the world have had a chance to sit in a royal landau (马车) or walk onto the dais (讲台) at Windsor Castle even before the Queen has done so?” she said.

While Miss Slack may not resemble the Queen facially, she has a similar figure to the Queen, standing just 5 foot. The Queen is 5 foot 2 inch. She began her remarkable role in 1988, when she was working as manager of the BBC’s sports and events department. A producer asked her if she could stand in for the Queen to check camera angles at a rehearsal and her second career was born.

Since then, from the State Opening of Parliament (议会) to the 50th anniversary of Victory day, wherever the Queen is on duty Miss Slack is likely to have been there first. She has perfected her own version of the Queen’s clothes, including a black patent handbag she bought in a charity shop for £1, and even styles her hair like the Queen.

    1What’s the Queen’s secret weapon?

    A. She often meets people in public.

    B. She actively attends social activities.

    C. She has a nice lady to act as herself.

    D. She and Miss Slack have a lot in common.

    2Miss Slack’s words in Paragraph 1 indicate that ___________.

    A. she thinks the job honorable and worthy

    B. she thinks she can do the job better

    C. she thinks frequently of her role

    D. she is determined to carry the job on

3How did Miss Slack get the job?

    A. The Queen invited her to do so.

    B. The BBC appointed her to finish the job.

    C. She was invited to have an accidental try.

    D. The advisers offered her the chance.

  • 22、A 5,300-year-old Chinese city that provides the earliest example of civilisation in the country has been named China’s latest UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Liangzhu Archaeological Site in Zhejiang Province was designated a “cultural site” at the ongoing UNESCO meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan, bringing the total number of Chinese heritage sites to 55 — surpassing (超过) Italy as the country with the largest number in the world.

The ruins, located in Hangzhou, sit on the plain of river networks in the basin of the Yangtze River and date back to around 3,300 BC. The site covers an area of 14.3 square kilometers and includes relics of 11 dams, cemetery sites (墓址), a water protection system and walls that give evidence to an early Chinese city civilization, with planing rice as the economic foundation.

The discovery of the site was of “primary importance” as it provides good evidence that Chinese civilization started around 5,000 years ago — 1,000 years earlier than previously (先前的) thought. Colin Renfrew, a retired professor of archaeology at the University of Cambridge said, “So when we are talking about the origins (起源) of state society in China, we can think of the Liangzhu instead of the Shang civilization around 1,500 BC.”

The site was first discovered in 1936 when a team of archaeologists unearthed some pottery (陶器) and began searching for further evidence. A breakthrough came in 1986 when a cemetery site with around 1,200 artifacts (手工艺品) was uncovered. The walls of the city were discovered in 2007 and the surrounding water protection system was unearthed in 2015. Archaeologists think that it would have taken 4,000 people working for ten years to build the system.

The decision to add the site to the UNESCO list is the result of more than twenty years’ work, with preparations starting in 1994. The site is now open to tourists, but the number allowed to visit the site is limited to 3,000 a day and bookings (预定) must be made online.

  • 23、In the middle of the Pacific Ocean lies a tiny, remote island whose most famous residents stand guard along the edges of the rocky land. These legendary islanders are actually massive stone statues called moai. There are more than 800 of them on Easter Island.

Carved by the Rapa Nui people, the sculptures—known for their oversized heads—represent Rapa Nui ancestors, and they are considered sacred by descendants of the ancient civilization who still live on the island today.

However, a few of the moai are missing from their native home. One statue has been on display at the British Museum in London, England, for about 150 years and is one of the institution’s most popular exhibits.

But that may not be the case for much longer. Rapa Nui leaders recently announced that they want the statue back. Their request is not unique. A great many museums around the world are facing similar pressure to return historical objects to their homelands.

The issue has raised a debate: Do ancient artifacts belong in the places they came from or should they be displayed in popular museums where millions of people can appreciate them?

Last year, France’s President Emmanuel Macron called for thousands of artworks in French museums to be returned to the countries in Africa from which they were taken without permission.

But many experts believe certain artifacts should remain in museums, which are more accessible for people. That’s one reason officials at the British Museum believe they should keep Hoa Hakananai’a, saying roughly 6 million people visit the British Museum annually—many to see the moai Meanwhile, only about 100,000 people tour the remote stretch of land each year.

Many experts also say that fragile ancient treasures are safer in museums. On Easter Island, for example, several of the moai are worsening because of centuries of rain and winds or harmed by tourists who touch them while taking selfies.

Still, most present-day Rapa Nui people believe Hoa Hakananai’a was stolen. To them, the statue is an important part of the is land’s history that should be returned.

【1】According to the passage, moai are________.

A.They are guards to protect the island.

B.They represent leaders on Easter Island.

C.They trace history back to 150 years ago.

D.They connect Rapa Nui and their ancestors.

【2】What is the attitude of France’s president to the return of artworks?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Neutral

    D.Opposed.

【3】Which of the following would the British Museum officials agree?

A.Ancient artifacts should be returned to their countries of origin.

B.Hoa Hakananai’a was not stolen but discovered by explorers.

C.Museums offer most people the chance to see famous artworks in person.

D.The oversized heads of Hoa Hakananai’a are the symbol of the civilization.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Stone statues like moai can be restored better indoors.

B.Hoa Hakananai’a is the best exhibit at the British Museum.

C.Tourists are to blame for the damage of all ancient treasures.

D.The return of ancient artworks is being requested globally.

  • 24、Beauty has always been regarded as something that deserves praise. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants (被告). But in the executive (行政的, 管理的) circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to account for their success.

Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones;their success was attributed (归因于) not to ability but to factors such as luck. All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight success was attributed more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight success.

An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.

This is true even in politics, "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. Then the students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males defeated unattractive men, but the women who had been ranked most attractive received the fewest votes.

【1】The underline word "liability" in paragraph 1 most probably means________.

    A.trouble

    B.advantage

    C.misfortune

    D.opportunity

    【2】In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness________.

    A.is beneficial

    B.is decisive

    C.ensures success

    D.reflects honesty

【3】The sentence "Why are attractive women not thought to be able?" should be put in________.

    A.①

    B.②

    C.③

    D.④

【4】Which of the following is true?

A.Attractive male executives tend to be more honest than their plain counterparts (职务相当的人).

B.Unattractive women executives were often found to be capable than the attractive female executives.

C.People are less likely to attribute the overnight success of unattractive women executives to personal ability.

D.An attractive woman needs to be feminine and manly at the same time.

【5】The author writes this passage to________.

A.demand equal rights in politics for females

B.give advice on how to achieve success for men

C.stress the importance of appearance for job-seekers

D.discuss the disadvantages of attractiveness for women
