二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Shanghai residents (居民) passing through the city’s eastern Huangpu district earlier this month might have discovered an unusual sight a “walking” building.

An 85-year-old primary school has been lifted off the ground in its entirety and relocated using new technology named the “walking” machine.

In the city’s latest effort to protect historic structures, engineers used nearly 200 mobile supports under the five-story building, according to Lan Wuji, chief technical supervisor of the project.

The supports act like robotic legs. They’re split into two groups which in turns rise up and down, like the human step. The sensors (感应器)help control how the building moves forward, said Lan.

In recent years, China’s rapid modernization has seen many historic buildings destroyed to clear land for skyscrapers and office buildings. But there has been growing concern about the architectural heritage (遗产)loss as a result of destruction across the country.

It is true Shanghai has been China’s most progressive city when it comes to heritage preservation. The survival of a number of 1930s buildings in the famous bund district and 19th-century “shikumen”or “stone gate” houses in the repaired Xintiandi neighborhood has offered examples of how to give old buildings new life.

The city also has a track record of relocating old buildings. In 2018, the city relocated a 90-year-old building in Hongkou district, which was then considered to be Shanghai’s most complex relocation project to date.

The Lagena Primary School, which weighs 7, 600 tons, faced a new challenge-it’s T-shaped, while previously relocated structures were square or rectangular(长方形的), according to Xinhua.

Experts and technicians met to discuss possibilities and test a number of different technologies before deciding on the “walking machine”, Xinhua said.

1Why did the 85-year-old primary school have to be moved?

A.To make room for modern buildings without destroying it.

B.To meet the new requirements of the school.

C.To protect it better as it is a cultural heritage.

D.To give the old building a new life…

2How did the primary school get moved?

A.By reducing the weight of it. B.By using movable supports.

C.By dividing it into several parts. D.By using robotic legs.

3Which of the following statements may the author agree with?

A.China’s rapid modernization leads to the architectural heritage loss.

B.The move of the primary school is the first example of heritage protection.

C.The different shape of the primary school adds difficulty to its move.

D.The move of the primary school is Shanghai’s most complex relocation project.

4Where does the passage probably come from?

A.A news report. B.A science review.

C.A travel magazine. D.A geography book.

  • 22、It was dark as Ibrahim Al Hussein came to. He couldn’t move and thick dust filled the air, blocking out all but a few small flames dancing close by. It was hard to breathe. Something wasn’t right and he could not feel his foot. As the smoke of the bombing cleared Al Hussein was saved but lost his lower right leg forever.

After several twists and turns, Al Hussein managed to escape from war-torn Syria to Athens, Greece. With no money left on him, he had to sleep on the streets and look for fruit in trees or eat grass from the park. Luckily, he later found work cleaning toilets at a local cafe. He worked every day of the week with no breaks and was proud to be supporting himself. But he was missing something—sport.

Al Hussein used to be a sportsman. As war broke out in Syria in 2011, all sports stadiums were forced to close, but now settled and safe in Athens, he was desperate to return to physical activity. In May, 2015, his prayers were answered. A swimming club gave him permission to train there.

“When I looked at the address I realised it was the Athens Aquatics Centre,” says Al Hussein, who, at the age of 16, had watched the 2004 Olympics unfold on a small TV in his cosy Syrian home. “Seeing those Olympics gave me motivation to do sport and although it was a flashback to the past, it was also a look to a better future because I had made it to the pool I’d watched and dreamt of swimming in.”

For much of 2015 he swam in the morning and then worked at the cafe until late in the evening. It was tough, but it worked for him and, in early 2016, he secured two medals at the Greek Para Swimming National Championships. People began to take note.

  • 23、In the desert north of Palm Springs, California, there are many huge wind turbine blades (风力涡轮机叶片). Hundreds of thousands of birds and other creatures die from crashing onto the turbine blades or flying too close to the blades.

Since 2018, the searchers has employed a group of “sharp-nosed workers” with names like Indy, Lady, and Filson. Sniffer dogs (嗅探犬) have been helping to search this area thoroughly to help scientists and energy producers in better understanding the impacts of wind farms on wildlife. The body parts they find may be shocking, but each one is a data point that will eventually help to protect other birds and bats as companies install (安装) more turbines for clean energy.

Hundreds of thousands of birds and bats die from crashing onto the turbines each year, resulting in wildlife populations decline. Wind operators can take steps to reduce the fatalities, such as playing loud sounds through speakers to keep birds away. But those measures only work when energy companies have a solid grasp of interactions between wind farms and wildlife.

If you need to know how many animals a wind farm kills, it helps to work with dogs. In a 2020 study using randomly placed bodies (尸体), human searchers found just 6 percent of bats and 30 percent of birds. Partnering with dogs, however, greatly improved the quality of the search. In the same study, detection dogs found 96 percent of bats and 90 percent of birds. Other researches have found similar results.

Thanks to the sniffers, scientists collected a wealth of data they couldn’t have obtained otherwise. While it’s sad to find so many animals killed by turbines, researchers are analyzing every bit of information they have to understand the industry’s true impacts and explore how to improve the design of future wind projects to achieve the necessary and rapid development of renewables with the least harm to wildlife.

【1】What are Indy, Lady and Filson?

    A.Human searchers.

    B.Detection dogs.

    C.Wild creatures.

    D.Energy producers.

【2】What does the underlined word “fatalities” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Uses.

    B.Injuries.

    C.Deaths.

    D.Costs.

【3】What message is implied in paragraph 4?

A.Researchers call for more quality data.

B.Dogs are better at searching for bodies.

C.Wind farms harm birds more than bats.

D.Deaths caused by wind farms have risen.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

    A.The urgency of bird protection

    B.The future of wind projects

C.A path leading to clean energy

    D.Helpers of collecting animal-saving data

  • 24、   Before my daughter, Evelyn, was born, I eagerly expected her first year of life. I imagined celebrating every milestone --- bonding with her as a newborn, seeing her smile for the first time, hearing her say her first word. 1 didn't think of feeding tubes, long hospital stays or an organ transplant( 移植). For Evelyn, the first year included all and more.

Evelyn came into this world at just 34 weeks, weighing less than 3 pounds. Genetic testing revealed she had Alagille syndrome, a genetic disorder that can damage the liver(肝脏),heart and other organs. Soon, we received the news that baby Evelyn needed a liver transplant. Our family moved nearer to UPMC Children's Hospial of Pittsburgh so that we were closer if a liver was available for Evelyn.

When Evelyn was added to the organ donation wait list, I was under the liver allocation policy in place at that time, which was map-based. This policy lacks any special consideration for transplant candidates. We were told it would likely take three months. Just then, a new policy for liver allocation was tried out.Under the new system, the sickest child patients get first priority(优先).The new policy was only in effect for a litle over a week, but in that period, Evelyn received her liver transplant. Had it been just one week earler or later, we would not have received the call.

As Evelyn recovers from her transplant, we are grateful for the change.I am also sad, because the new policy was short-lived. That means another mom like me might not receive that phone call with good news.

Other children should have the same opportunity as Evelyn to live healthy, happy lives. When it comes to liver transplant policy, we can and must do better for children.

1What probably happened to Evelyn shorly after she was born?

A.She failed to give a smile.

B.She had a serious liver failure.

C.She said her first word quickly.

D.She suffered from a heart attack.

2Why did the author's family move nearer to the hospital?

    A.To save time.

    B.To have money.

    C.To see a doctor.

    D.To get first priority.

3What does the author mean by the underlined sentence?

    A.Evelyn is healthy now.

    B.They waited too long.

    C.They were one week earlier.

    D.Her daughter is fortunate.

4What does the author want to express in the last pargraph?

A.We must guarantee kids have healthy livers.

B.Kids should have chances of a liver transplant.

C.The sickest kids should get liver transplants first.

D.The old policy lacks special consideration for kids.
