二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、We had promised to do it for years. We would pack a car with cold chicken and drive south like we used to. But we never had a proper time to do it, somehow. My aunt Edna’s heart was failing. Aunt Juanita had to care for my uncle at home, and my mother, Margaret, did not leave home unless blown away from it by tornadoes. So I was surprised a few years ago when my 72-year-old mother told me to pick up all of them for the trip.

I found the three sisters in the yard, with suitcases in their hands. Edna packed some food including two gallons of potato salad for the two-day trip from Jacksonville, Alabama.

As I drove, they talked of childhood, dirt roads where the dark closed in like a cover on a box, and a daddy who chased the bad things away as soon as he walked in. When we arrived in Montgomery, they had ridden a horse named Bob, cooked a dead chicken named Mrs. Rearden, and fished beside a little man named Jessie Clines. As we drove across Mobile Bay they were remembering their mama and a groundhog that lived under the floorboards.

I wanted them to see the sunset from the Fairhope pier, and as we rolled down the bluff, I heard them go quiet. But the sunset was just a light to see. They were looking at the roses, which were flowering in a circle the size of a baseball field. There were more than 2,000 of them. My mother, who never even liked roses much, said, “Oh, my God.” Juanita looked as if she were about to cry. “So beautiful,” she said again and again. She stayed in the rose garden for a long time, till the sun disappeared totally. She saw the Fairhope roses six times on this trip. The last time, because she was tired , we sat in the car.

A year later, I spoke at Edna’s funeral. For the first time, I knew what I wanted to say in my mind, but the words crashed together inside my head and I lost the fine things I really wanted to say. Her daughters just hugged me, one by one, and thanked me for the roses.

    A.She liked roses most.

    B.She was once a soldier.

C.She died a year after the trip.

D.She had to care for her husband.

  • 22、Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $ 1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.

It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane(膜)or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. It’s completely tasteless so you needn’t worry about any taste.

It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention.

The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble(泡状物)or a unit of bubbles hasn’t been decided yet, but it costs about two cents to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months.

Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. It’s quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out for these bottles of the future.

【1】How is most plastic in America dealt with?

A.It is thrown away as litter.

B.It is reused as new energy.

C.It is buried under the ground.

D.It is applied to new technology.

【2】What can we know about the Ooho?

A.It plans to be sold at a very low price.

B.It has some advantages over plastic bottles.

C.It has taken the place of plastic bottles in London.

D.Proper materials of making Ooho are hard to find.

    【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards Ooho’s future?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Uninterested.

    C.Positive.

    D.Worried.

    【4】Who might be target readers?

    A.Scientists.

    B.Experts.

    C.Environmentalists.

    D.The public.

  • 23、   NASA is sending a helicopter to Mars, in the first test of a heavier-than-air aircraft on another planet. The Mars Helicopter will be launched in 2021 together with the US space agency’s Mars rover(探测车).

Its design team spent more than four years reducing a working helicopter to “the size of a softball” and cutting its weight to 1.8kg. It is specifically designed to fly in the atmosphere of Mars, which is 100 times thinner than Earth's.

Scientists of the former Soviet Union dropped two balloons into the atmosphere of Venus in the 1980s. No aircraft has ever taken off from the surface of another planet.

“The idea of a helicopter flying the skies of another planet is thrilling,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “The Mars Helicopter holds much promise for our future science, discovery, and exploration missions to Mars.”

While the tiny craft is being called a helicopter, there will be no pilot. It will be flying almost 55 million km from Earth, too far away to send a remote control signal.

“Earth will be several light years away, so there is no way to control this mission in real time,” said Mimi Aung, the project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Instead, the helicopter will “fly the mission on its own.”

The JPL team made the helicopter as strong as possible to give it the best chance of surviving. “The altitude record for a helicopter flying here on Earth is about 40,000 feet,” Ms Aung said. “When our helicopter is on the surface of Mars, it’s already at the Earth equal height of 100,000 feet up.”

That is part of the reason why NASA is calling the Mars Helicopter a “high risk” project.

“If it does not work, the Mars 2021 mission will not be impacted. If it does work, helicopters may have a real future as low-flying aerial(空中的)vehicles to access locations not reachable by ground travel,” NASA said.

The Mars 2021 rover, accompanied by its helicopter companion, is due to launch in July of that year and arrive on the red planet in February 2022.

【1】What was the design team's main job during the past few years?

A.Making the helicopter safe fora pilot.

B.Making the helicopter fly fast enough.

C.Making the helicopter fly to another planet

D.Making the helicopter quite small and light.

    【2】What’s special about the helicopter?

A.It will carry a Mars rover.

B.It can be controlled remotely on Earth.

C.It will take off from the surface of Mars.

D.It can fly at an altitude of 140,000 feet up on Mars.

【3】What might NASA think of the helicopter?

A.It will be ready in 2022.

    B.It is a worthwhile project.

    C.It will achieve great success.

D.It has affected the Mars 2021 mission.

【4】What is the purpose of the text?

A.To analyze the possibility of settling on Mars.

B.To encourage people to explore other planets.

C.To report a new development in space exploration.

D.To stress the importance of NASA’s role in space exploration.

  • 24、Is it possible to make paper without trees? Australian businessmen Kevin Garcia and John Tse were determined to find out. They spent a year researching a possible alternative that could serve as a possible raw material for making paper.

“What if we re - engineer how paper is made to be more in line with our environmental responsibility?” asked Garcia. Then Garcia read about a Taiwanese company making paper out of stone and inspiration struck. A year later, in July 2017, they launched Karst Stone Paper. The company produces paper without using wood, water or chemicals with terrible smell. Their source is stone waste mined from construction sites and other industrial waste places.

“If you look at the whole process of how paper is traditionally made, it involves cutting trees, adding chemicals and bleach to make pulp (纸浆), using lots of water and then squeezing, drying and flattening it into sheets of paper,” said Garcia. “It contributes to high deforestation and carbon emission (抖、放).”

The pulp and paper industry uses over 40% of all industrial wood traded globally, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Karst, based in Sydney, aims to reduce the rate of deforestation with its sustainably-made paper goods.

In 2019, Garcia estimated (估计) Karst’s paper production helped save 540 large trees from being cut down, 83, 100 liters of water from being used and 25, 500 kilograms of carbon dioxide from being emitted.

“We collect abandoned limestone from wherever we can find it, wash it and ground it into fine powder,” Garcia said, “The powder is mixed with HDPE resin (高密度聚乙烯树脂). The paste-like mixture is finally turned into thin sheets of paper. The carbon emission from this process is about 67% less than making paper from tree pulp,” he said.

【1】The first paragraph is intended to __________.

A.It develops materials for making paper.

B.It just aims to make great profits.

C.It produces paper in conventional ways.

D.It makes paper from stone waste.

【3】The underline word “deforestation” in paragraph 3 most probably mean “__________”.

    A.destroying the forests

    B.planting the trees

    C.wasting the pulp

    D.polluting the water

【4】Which of the following are the benefits of Karst’s paper production except __________.

A.reduce the emission of carbon dioxide

B.protect the trees from being cut down

    C.without adding chemicals and bleach

    D.save large amount of water
