21、 Poet William Stafford once said that we are defined more by the detours(绕行路) in life than by the narrow road toward goals. I like this image. But it was quite by accident that I discovered the deep meaning of his words.
For years we made the long drive from our home in Seattle to my parents' home in Boise in nine hours. We traveled the way most people do: the fastest, shortest, easiest road, especially when I was alone with four noisy, restless kids who hate confinement(限制) and have strong opinions about everything.
Road trips felt risky, so I would drive fast, stopping only when I had to. We would stick to the freeways and arrive tired.
But then Banner, our lamb was born.He was rejected by his mama days before our planned trip to Boise.I had two choices:leave Banner with my husband,or take him with me.My husband made the decision for me.
That is how I found myself on the road with four kids, a baby lamb and nothing but my everlasting optimism to see me through. We took the country roads out of necessity. We had to stop every hour, let Banner shake out his legs and feed him. The kids chased him and one another. They'd get back in the car breathless and energized, smelling fresh from the cold air.
We explored side roads, catching grasshopper in waist-high grass. Even if we simply looked out of the car window, at baby pigs following their mother, or fish leaping out of the water, it was better than the best ride down the freeway. Here was life. And new horizons(见识).
We eventually arrived at my parents' doorstep astonishingly fresh and full of stories.
I grew brave with the trip back home and creative with my disciplining technique.
On an empty section of road, everyone started quarreling. I stopped the car, ordered all kids out and told them to meet me up ahead. I parked my car half a mile away and read my book in sweet silence.
Some road trips are by necessity fast and straight. But that trip with Banner opened our eyes to a world available to anyone adventurous enough to wander around and made me realize that a detour may uncover the best part of a journey-and the best part of yourself.

22、 A dog snoring away the afternoon on the living room floor. Walruses snoozing on a beach. Lions sprawled out on the Serengeti. A hippo dozing on a mudbank. 【1】 Why do these mammals seem to be getting so much more sleep than humans? Do they actually need more sleep? Are they just sleeping because they can? Should humans be sleeping more, too? Be prepared for a surprising and fascinating answer to these questions: 【2】
Though constantly studied, sleep is one of the great mysteries modern science hasn't completely cracked. We really don't know what sleep is for." Dr. David Raizen, an associate professor of neurology said.
One idea is that steep in mammals has to do with body size and diet, according to a 2005 study in the journal Nature. 【3】 A reason for this may be that the larger an animal is, the more calories it needs, and the more time it needs to spend eating. 【4】 Sleep is complex, hard to measure in wild animals and even harder to interpret. It's important to remember that some differences in observed sleep might not be what they seem. Just because a house cat sleeps for 18 hours a day doesn't mean it needs all that sleep to function, Raizen said.
【5】 Raizen said the most important thing is for people to listen to their bodies and get as much sleep as they feel they need-which is about eight hours for most folks but might be as few as five and as many as eleven.
A.Nobody knows.
B.As for human sleep?
C.Dr. David will tell the truth.
D.However, the matter is far from settled.
E.These sleepy scenes may make people puzzled.
F.Many studies of mammalian sleep have been carried out so far.
G.Scientists have observed less sleep is related to a larger body.
23、 Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Even worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic (学术的) growth and spiritual health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in math and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by The College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’ academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education..
Music programs in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relations hip troubles, and choices about smoke and alcohol (酒精). All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by The Texas Commission on Drug and Alcohol Abuse found that students who took part in school music programs were less likely to turn to smoke. Music programs encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class and culture. Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
【1】The two studies seem to show that ________.
A.students with great success attend music lessons

B.It can cause a lot of academic problems.
C.It will affect the world cultural communication greatly.
D.It does good to students’ academic success and spiritual health.

24、 I grew up in a house where the TV was seldom turned on and with one wall in my bedroom entirely lined with bookshelves, most of my childhood was spent on books I could get hold of. In fact, I grew up thinking of reading as natural as breathing and books unbelievably powerful in shaping perspectives (观点) by creating worlds we could step into, take part in and live in.
With this unshakable belief, I, am fourteen, decided to become a writer. Here too, reading became useful. Every writer starts off knowing that he has something to say, but being unable to find the right ways to say it. He has to find his own voice by reading widely and discovering which parts of the writers he agrees or disagrees with, or agrees with so strongly that it reshapes his own world. He cannot write without loving to read, because only through reading other people’s writing can one discover what works, what doesn't and, in the end, together with lots of practice, what voice he has.
Now I am in college, and have come to realize how important it is to read fiction (文学作品). As a law student, my reading is in fact limited to subject matter — the volume (量) of what I have to read for classes every week means there is little time to read anything else. Such reading made it all the clearer to me that I live in a very small part in this great place called life. Reading fiction reminds me that there is life beyond my own. It allows me to travel across the high seas and along the Silk Road, all from the comfort of my own armchair, to experience, though secondhand, exciting experiences that I wouldn’t necessary be able to have in my lifetime.
【1】What can be inferred about the author as a child?
A.He never watched TV.
B.He was made to read.

A.Because he believed in the power of books.
B.Because he grew up with his bed room full of books.
C.Because he wanted to reshape his own world.
D.Because he majored in writing in college.
【3】The underlined word “voice” in the second paragraph most probably means “________”.
A.the writing skill of an outstanding writer
B.a sound produced through mouth when one speaks

C.It makes his college life more interesting.
D.It increases his interest in worldwide travel.
