二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It's just before l pm and hungry guests are starting to emerge out onto the wooden floor at the back of the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge in Zimbabwe. A few have already settled in for lunch, drinking beer and enjoying their sandwiches and salads in the sunshine. It's a normal setting until you look up. Overhead, the sky is filled with several hundred vultures (秃鹭).

They too have arrived for their midday snack. Every day the team at this hotel places last night's leftover meat out for the vultures to eat. They call it the "Vulture Restaurant" and it's a vital part of protecting these birds, who have become some of the most endangered species in Africa.

In Zimbabwe, where illegal hunting of elephants and rhinos is a major issue, poisoning poses a significant threat to the birds. "In recent years hunters have realized they can use poison to kill animals. It's effective because it's silent and therefore doesn't attract much attention.when the vultures eat the bodies of the dead animals they die too," says Roger Parry, Wildlife Manager at the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust.

The Vulture Restaurant initiative is part feeding programme, part education programme. By attracting the birds to the Vulture Restaurant every day the team can ensure they're regularly getting a safe meal, and while the birds are there they can educate tourists from all over the world about these creatures.

“Lunch” is served by Moses Garira. He has the unenviable task of wandering out into the middle of the clearing with a box full of meat, dropping the contents onto the ground and running for his life as the vultures fly downward suddenly for their food. No one, surely, would volunteer for this role, but Garira rather enjoys it. Back in the safety of the viewing seats, he tells the onlookers about the importance of vultures. "They're hugely important in terms of their role of cleaning up the bodies of dead animals," says Garira. "Notably, they're safely able to digest bacteria like anthrax. Without vultures, there'd be a lot more disease in the world."

【1】What's the biggest threat vultures facing in Zimbabwe?

    A.Overhunting.

    B.Unsafe food.

    C.Loss of habitat.

    D.A bird disease.

【2】What would others think of Garira's job?

    A.Scary.

    B.Relaxing.

    C.Well-paid.

    D.Time-consuming

    【3】What do Garira's words mean?

    A.Birds are human's best friends.

    B.People know little about vultures.

    C.Vultures are environmentally favorable.

D.Vultures are in urgent need of protection.

  • 23、   In a study of young people in the UK aged 12-20, half of them said they had been bullied (欺凌) . People who are bullied are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety. They might lose interest in the activities they enjoy, avoid spending time with other people and not go to classes or school, which has a negative effect on their learning.

Bullying is not just physical, like hitting or kicking someone, or taking their things without permission. Bullying can also be With words- -saying or writing things that are not nice. Another type of bullying is social- choosing not to include someone, embarrassing someone or telling other people not to be friends with them. Bullying can happen at school, on public transport, when you're walking home, online .... In fact, it can happen anywhere.

Bullying usually involves more people than you think. There are the people who bully and those who are bullied. Sometimes other people help the bully or join in. Then there are the kids that support- -they don't bully anyone directly, but they support the bullying by being audience. They laugh or encourage the children who are bullying in other ways. This is why it's important for everyone to work together against bullying. Some children see what is happening and want to help, although they don't know how. Others may comfort and defend the person being bullied. To stop bullying we need everyone to be brave and take a stand.

Does your school do anything to prevent bullying? Why don't you create a student anti-bullying group? This group can do many things. Let the head teacher know how well the school is doing with fighting bullying and give them advice. Choose an anti-bullying slogan for your school, make posters and displays or take over the school's social media for a week to send out anti-bullying messages.

Bullying is a social problem and it needs a solution from society- in other words, everyone. Next time you see someone being cruel to someone else, take a stand! Don't laugh or ignore what's happening- -tell an adult as soon as possible and help everyone to realize that bullying is not OK.

A.They have interest in the activities. B.They are likely to talk with people.

    C.An anti-bullying slogan. D.A student anti-bullying group.

  • 24、The 2021 Nobel Economics Prize has been awarded to Robert Wilson and Paul Milgrom for their work in analyzing auctions and how to make them more efficient.

At the heart of the work for which Milgrom and Wilson have been awarded is the winner's curse. 【1】 . An example might be the right to mine a certain area for gold. If no gold is found, the right will be worthless; but if there turns out to be a lot of gold, it will be valuable. Different bidders may have different opinions about how much hold is on the site. The more optimistic they are, the more they will be willing to bid. The most optimistic bid will win. But the true value is likely to turn out much closer to the average rather than the highest valuation,so winning bidders are likely to overpay.

Wilson's work has shown that the fear of the winner's curse leads rational bidders to bid less than the own valuation. 【2】 .Their final price will therefore be lower.

Milgrom built on this to examine the case of auctions where there is not only a common value but also a private value that differs between bidders. In focusing again on the winner's curse, Milgrom determined that English-style auctions, where the price starts low and is bid upward, are better at avoiding the winner's curse than Dutch-style auctions---where the price starts high and is bid downward. This is because bidders gain more information about an item's value during an English-style auction,as other bidders drop out. 【3】 .

How have such insights help society? For one thing, Milgrom and Wilson developed the Simultaneous Multiple Round Auction'(SMRA). In these auctions, all biddable items are offered at the same time and bidders can bid on any portion of the items. The SMRA is useful, for example,if a company wants to bid for a license in one area only if it can also have the license in another area.【4】 . Running auctions simultaneously allows governments to maximize the prices of valuable assets. This gives governments more money to spend on public services like health and education.

A.If the auctions were held sequentially, the uncertainty about winning the second auction would depress bids in the first auction.

B.It arises from common value auctions where people bid for something whose value is unknown at the time but will be agreed upon later.

C.From determining the placement of every ad on a webpage to assigning the rights to fly to hub airports, auctions play a big role in contemporary society.

D.Greater uncertainty or the belief that some participants have more information than others will make bidders even more cautious.

E.He found that more details about the object's value, such as other bidders' valuations, tend to result in higher revenue.

F.This year's Nobel Economics Prize is a clear example of the practical effects on the interests of the public.

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Many years ago, I thought I was adopting a mini pig, but it turned out that I was wrong when it reached 650 pounds. One night, about five years ago, I was surfing the Internet in the living room. Then I received a message from a former classmate. We hadn’t communicated for a long time, so I felt a little surprised.

“Hey Steve,” she said. “I know you love animals very much. I have a mini pig that is not getting along with my dogs. I can’t keep it. Do you want it?”

It’s true that I’ve always loved animals. My first best friend was my childhood dog. So I was quite excited. A mini pig sounded lovely. The whole situation seemed a little strange, but I’ve always been a trusting person.

I replied casually, “Let me do some research and I will give you an answer later.”

But I knew I wanted the pig. I just had to figure out how to make it happen, because I had many pets and a roommate.

A few hours later, I got another message from her:

“Someone else is interested. If you don’t want her, this other person will take her.”

You’re probably smart enough to recognize this as a manipulative tactic (巧妙的策略), and normally I’m smart enough too. But I wouldn’t let that pig go. So I told her that I’d take the animal. I gave her my address, and we agreed to meet near my house the next day.

    注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

I knew nothing about mini pigs.
