二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、We get it: You’re tired. You’re busy. And your shoes are way over there. Excuses are OK sometimes, but not every day—and especially not today. So put on your sneakers, get up off the couch, and let us kick your excuses to the curb (路牙子).

    “I ...dislike...panting (气喘)!”

Being really out of breath may mean you’re trying too much too soon, which will kill your confidence. But you don’t have to be huffing and puffing to get a workout. Active doesn’t have to mean high-intensity (高强度). It’s just about moving.

    “I hate exercise.”

It may seem unbearable, but you just have to get started. Exercise releases endorphins (your brain’s own feel-good chemicals), which can be habit forming. What’s the best exercise? The one you’ll do regularly. So you may hate running. Don’t run! Ride your bike or just dance. Even cleaning your room is active. As long as you’re moving and getting your blood pumping, it counts. So get creative.

    “I don’t have time.”

You may not have lots of time to spare when you’re busy with schoolwork, but I bet you can find 10 minutes. Bonus: An activity break will send oxygen to your brain, making you super-alert (超级警觉的) and more creative, too. Famous thinkers like Aristotle and Steve Jobs liked “walking meetings”, and you can follow in their footsteps by moving around while you brainstorm about a tough task or memorize your English vocabulary.

    “I never see results !”

Even if you train with the help of a professional, you won’t see results right away. But you will feel them almost immediately. Don’t focus on how your body looks -focus on how you feel. Keep a journal of when you exercise (or don’t) and how you feel that day: Stressed? Focused? Tired? When you start noticing the amazing effects of exercise, you’ll have no excuses.

【1】The underlined part “huffing and puffing” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by_______.

    A.moving around

    B.breathing heavily

    C.feeling confident

    D.wearing nice shoes

【2】In the author’s eyes, the best exercise is the one that_______.

    A.is very relaxing

    B.you will stick to

    C.produces good results

    D.you can spare time on

【3】Steve Jobs is mentioned to prove that doing exercise_______.

    A.is good for one’s figure

    B.is good for one’s health

    C.makes one much happier

    D.makes one more productive

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Exercise Excuses We Are Not Buying

    B.Benefits of Regular Physical Activity

C.The Best Exercise and Fitness Routines

D.How to Get Started with an Exercise Plan

  • 22、Howling is a behavior commonly observed among a wolf pack. As pack animals, wolves work together to hunt and rely on howling as an important means of communication among each other. There are different explanations of a wolf’s howl and it appears that there may be more to discover.

One theory is that wolves howl to bond better together. It’s almost as if howling together helps the pack stay together. Perhaps its something similar to people feeling a sense of involvement with each other when singing a song together. But this theory may be wrong, explains Fred H. Harrington, a professor who studies wolf behavior.

Indeed, there have been times when wolves have been seen one moment howling in a chorus, and the next, quarreling among each other. It appears that usually the lowest-ranking members of the pack may actually be “punished” for joining in the chorus at times. So is howling a way to strengthen a social bond or just a way to reconfirm (重新确认) status among its members? —Why do wolves howl for sure?

What is clear, however, is that howling is often used among packmates to locate each other. Hunting grounds are distant and it happens that wolves may separate from one another at times. When this happens, howling appears to be an excellent means of gathering.

Howling, interestingly, is a contagious behavior. When one wolf starts to howl, very likely others will follow. This is often seen to happen in the morning, as if wolves were doing some sort of “roll call” where wolves all howl together to report their presence.

【1】 What is the possible similarity between wolves’ howling together and human’s singing  in chorus?

    A. The act of calling each other.

    B. The sense of accomplishment.

    C. The act of hunting for something.

    D. The sense of belonging to a group.

【2】 Why does Harrington think the “social bond” theory may be wrong?

    A. Wolves tend to protect their hunting grounds.

    B. Wolves separate from each other after howling.

    C. Wolves sometimes have quarrels after howling together.

    D. Wolves of low rank are encouraged to join in the chorus.

【3】Researchers are sure that wolves often howl to______.

    A.show their ranks

    B. find their companions

    C. report the missing ones

    D. express their loneliness

【4】The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means_______.

    A. howling is a signal for hunting

    B. howling is a way of communication

    C. howling often happens in the morning

    D. howling spreads from one to another

  • 23、   Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice field, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.

Decibels measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect. Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.

A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whale's ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected.

Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.

Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.

【1】According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?

    A.The man-made noise.

    B.The noises made by themselves.

    C.The sound of earthquakes.

    D.The sound of the ice-breaking.

【2】Which of the following is discussed in the second paragraph?

A.Different places with different types of noise.

B.The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.

C.The same noise measure differently on land and in the ocean.

D.The ocean animal's reaction to noises.

【3】As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is true?

    A.They are deaf to noises.

B.Noises at a certain level may hurt them.

C.They are easily confused by noises.

D.Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.

【4】We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would________.

A.prevent them from doing their research work

B.benefit them a lot in their research work

    C.do good to their health

    D.increase the industrial output

  • 24、These large hairy creatures have been sighted around the world, and they appear frequently in ancient folklore. Here are some of the best places you should visit as you search for Yeti and Bigfoot.

    Willow Creek, California

Called the gateway to Bigfoot Country, Willow Creek is the site of the most famous Bigfoot footage—the classic photo of the dark, hairy creature traveling across the actual Willow Creek in Six Rivers National Forest. A museum in the town houses a series of casts of Bigfeet's footprints, photos, and other information and evidence about the being.

    Ontario, Canada

A hunter and his wife thought it was a moose (麋鹿) call when they heard a long loud shout in the northwestern Ontario wilderness, but then they heard it again and found some big humanoid footprints. BFRO has 68 Bigfoot reports from Ontario, the most recent of which was in July 2020 when campers reported hearing howls and cracking branches near their campsite.

    Michigan's Upper Peninsula

There have been hundreds of sightings of Bigfoot in the Upper Peninsula, and some witnesses claim to have seen entire packs of the ape-like creatures. The Upper Peninsula is heavily wooded and offers many areas for the monsters to hide.

    Fouke, Arkansas

The small town in southwest Arkansas is known as the Bigfoot Capital of the midwestern state. A reported Bigfoot attack in Fouke even inspired a 1970s film called The Legend of Boggy Creek. When reports of the monster first made the rounds in the mid-1800s, residents assumed the creature was a survivor of the New Madrid earthquake who had lost his mind from the injury.

【1】What is special about Willow Creek?

A.It is home to various rare birds.

B.It is suitable to camp in all seasons.

C.It has a museum related to Bigfoot.

D.It is the best site to take pictures with friends.

【2】What do we know about the hunter and his wife?

A.They heard the strange sound only once.

    B.They once watched a 1970s film together.

C.They might mistake the Bigfoot's shout as a deer call.

D.They were very interested in the lifestyle of wildlife.

【3】What caused the production of the film The Legend of Boggy Creek?

    A.The Bigfoot attack.

    B.The residents' response.

    C.The earthquake's effects.

D.The serious injury of a survivor.
