21、 (CHINA DAILY)In recent months, technologies have significantly increased China’s efficiency in the fight against COVID-19, among which two have brought great changes and benefits to our daily lives during the outbreak.
Driverless delivery drone
Since the beginning of the year, most people have stayed home to protect themselves from the novel coronavirus. But that means getting food and supplies from outside can be troublesome. To solve this problem, Chinese online retailer (零售商) JD.com adopted many driverless delivery vehicles to work for their customers in February.Navigated (导航) by radar and sensors, the robots can avoid barriers and pedestrians, respond accordingly to traffic signals and make their way to delivery sites, according to China Daily.“The smart robot can not only deliver supplies to us, but also reduce the possibility of infection by contact. It is such a big help for us,” a citizen in Wuhan told People’s Daily.
Infrared imaging thermometer (红外成像体温计)
To prevent the virus spreading, people in China are required to check their temperatures when they go to public places during the pandemic. But it’s risky for people to use an ordinary thermometer, which relies on direct contact to measure temperature. This is where the infrared thermometer comes in handy.According to the Telegraph, infrared imaging technology uses a lens (镜头) to focus on the light coming from an object in the form of infrared rays, then detects heat patterns and gives accurate readings over temperatures. It can be used as far as three meters away from people without any contact.

22、An Arizona aquarium is celebrating the hatching of three endangered African penguin chicks, saying the tiny additions are genetically (从基因方面) valuable as zoos and aquariums around the world work to ensure the species’ survival through breeding (培育) programs and conservation efforts.
Officials at OdySea Aquarium made the announcement Friday, posting video of the cute birds on social media. They hatched a few weeks ago and will remain behind the scenes with their parents until they’re ready for a public appearance.
African penguins have suffered a massive population decline over the decades and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. So any successful hatching is cause for celebration, said Jess Peranteau, director of animal care and education at the aquarium.
“As the population of the African penguin continues to rapidly decline - down 23% in the past two years alone -OdySea Aquarium remains committed to the survival of the species in partnership with other Association of Zoos and Aquariums,” Peranteau said in a statement. The breeding program established by the association aims to build up a gene bank for the species.
Officials say two of the three new chicks in Scottsdale were born to parents Mojo and Lemieux-a power couple of sorts that was selected for pairing as part of the breeding program. The third chick was born to first-time parents Bubbles and Weasley.
Aquarium workers will regularly conduct “chick checks”, brief exams to monitor their growth and development and ensure they are hitting all necessary milestones. The three chicks have yet to be named, and their sex hasn’t yet been determined. For now they’re known by their numbers, 42, 43 and 44. In all, OdySea Aquarium now has 40 African penguins and has recorded 13 successful hatchings.

23、Have you got any gadgets hanging around your home that you no longer want or use? Between us, we have millions of bits of tech stockpiled in drawers that could be given a new lease of life.
Part of the problem for our unloved gadgets is that many become obsolete quickly because their software doesn’t get updated. Other items are left unused because they’re broken or they’ve become replaced by a fancy new version. Many of these items are electronics, but despite them appearing to be past their sell-by date, they don’t need to end up in landfill. And here are some tips for you to make the most of our unwanted gadgets.
Recycling is the obvious solution
Materials used to make them can be extracted and reused in other things. As an example, Elisabeth Ratcliffe from the Royal Society of Chemistry told the BBC: “There are about thirty different elements just in a smartphone, and many of them are very rare. ” These can be used in touch screens and solar panels.
Repairing is the best approach
Probably the best approach to our throwaway culture is to repair our broken tech. This takes patience and skill, which can be learnt at repair clubs and repair cafés—free meeting places where you’ ll find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. In the UK, the interest in mending our stuff and giving it a new life is reflected by the popularity of a TV series called The Repair Shop, where craftspeople rescue and resurrect items their owners thought were beyond saving.
Upcycle is a final option
You can breathe new life into unwanted stuff by transforming it into valuable pieces or collectable retro items. These could be sold on, meaning you can make some cash from your junk and create much needed space in your home!
【1】Which of the following isn’t the reason for the problems of unwanted gadgets?
A.Their software doesn’t get upgraded
B.They are substituted with senior versions
C.They need to end up in landfill
D.They may have passed sell-by date
【2】In which way can you make some profit from dealing with thrown-away gadgets?
A.Recycle them
B.Repair them
C.Upcycle them
D.Reuse them
【3】What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to make our gadgets last longer
B.How to protect environment better
C.The ways to use gadgets effectively
D.The problems of unwanted gadgets
24、During his first years at Cambridge University, Stephen Hawking’s life was full of color. He felt as if the world was in his hands and he had a promising future. But to his surprise, his life changed. A rare disease stood in the way of his university life. When he went to see a doctor, he got the saddest news of his life. He had motor neurone disease (运动神经元病), a disease that causes the muscles to become weaker and ends in paralysis (瘫痪).
For someone in his 20s, with lots of promise and dreams, it was no doubt terrible news. What was worse, the doctor told him that the average life expectancy for people with his disease was no more than two years. In one moment, his world broke into pieces. He continued studying physics and later, as we know, he made great contributions to the field.
When he lived past the average life expectancy of two years, he surprised everybody. And more surprisingly, he lived for decades more. During those years, he got married and became a father to three children. On March 14, 2018, Hawking died in Cambridge, UK at the age of 76.
Stephen Hawking didn’t stop when he had difficulties. He contributed to the world with his strong will. He is seen as the greatest scientist since Albert Einstein. Without a doubt. his life was still colorful and meaningful.

26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Animated movies use drawings instead of real people. Artists must draw thousands of pictures and each picture must be a little different. For example, if the movie-maker wants to show a girl running, the artist must draw her feet in different places in each picture. When the pictures are shown very quickly, one after the other, it looks like the girl is running. Walt Disney was not the first or only person to use animation in movies, but he is the most renowned. His first Mickey Mouse cartoon, produced in 1927, was called Plane Crazy. This was a short, silent movie about the adventures of a little mouse.
Many people in the movie business thought that animation was only appropriate for short cartoons. Disney did not agree with them. He believed that he could tell any kind of story using animation. His first long movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney spent all his money making this movie. Fortunately, it was a great success. He made Pinocchio next and then Dumbo (about a baby elephant), and he didn’t look back after this.
When we think of Disney, however, we don’t only think of movies, we also think of Disneyland. There are Disneylands in Japan, the United States of America and France. They are large parks where people can meet Disney’s characters and visit scenes from his movies.
Although Walt Disney made many of the famous movies many years ago, they are as popular now as they were when he made them. Today we can buy them on video and see them in movie theatres from time to time. When Walt Disney began making his animated cartoons all those years ago, people drew all the pictures by hand. Nowadays computers do much of his work.
