21、One morning a few years ago, at home in the Mänoa Valley on Oahu, scientist Kimberly Carlson looked out of the window and saw a rainbow so bright and clear that it took her breath away. That wasn’t a shocker: Hawaii is possibly the best place in the world to see rainbows today, and Manoa has particularly ideal conditions for clear bows: frequent rain showers and sunlight. But Carlson, now an environmental science professor now at New York University, realized she didn’t know the answer to a simple question: Would climate change affect Hawaii’s and the whole planet’s breathtaking rainbows? She shared the question with some climate scientist colleagues, and it interested them so much that they enlisted a class full of students to investigate.
Rainbows are not special because their basic ingredients are common and governed by relatively straightforward physics. “The basic recipe for seeing any part of the natural rainbow,” says Lee, “is sunlit rain.”
In November, they published their findings. “Climate change is affecting rainbows—now we know that’s true,” says Carlson, the lead author on the paper, which used computer models to simulate future rainbow-ready conditions. As major weather patterns change because of climate change, many parts of the world-particularly places nearer to the poles, like Alaska or Siberia, will get more rain—potentially adding dozens more rainbow-rich days by the end of the century.
The changes follow broader patterns of climate change; in fact, the shifts highlight some of the biggest risks and dangers. The increases in the Arctic, for example, are likely to play out because water that used to fall from the sky as snow will more often drop down as rain in a hotter future. And today’s rainbow-rich Amazon is predicted to suffer more frequently drought—both because the forest, which currently creates it sown rain, will lose that superpower as it shrinks, and because planet-wide climate change is shifting and changing the major weather patterns that cause tropical rainfall.
【1】Why does the author mention Carlson’s experience in paragraph 1?
A.To explain a rule.
B.To introduce a topic.
C.To present a fact.
D.To make a prediction.
【2】What is the most important reason of seeing a natural rainbow?
A.Frequent sunlight.
B.Frequent rain showers.

D.The geographic position.
【3】What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.Climate change causes more rainbows.
B.More rainbows worsen the climate condition.
C.There will be less rainbows in Siberia.
D.The temperature will be lower in Alaska.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.There may be more snow than rain in the Arctic.
B.Rainbows will be on the increase always.
C.Increase of rainbows is a natural phenomenon.
D.Amazon may suffer from drought more frequently.
22、Gadgets that make study fun
Now in a world piled high with smart phones, tablets and e-readers, technology has entered the classroom in ways unimaginable. Taking classes can be fun too. All you have to do is swipe your fingers on your phone screen and download some apps, which can make your study more fun and efficient. Balancing study and play in a college setting has never been easy-and with the following few apps, it’ll be tough to tell the two apart.
Evernote
Use: note-taking
Can be used on: Phone/iPad/iPod touch, Android, BlackBerry, Palm OS and Windows, Phone 7
Price: free
It’s hard to imagine that with all the magical gadgets, the eager, studious types would still take out a notepad, a pencil, and a highlighter—and take notes in class. While it’s not an actual planner or a calendar App, if you take notes to stay organized, then Evernote is for you.The main thing about Evernote is that all of your notes are automatically sent into the cloud---and then you can access them from any web-connected computer via the Evernote app or a web browser. Evernote also supports audio and photo notes-rather handy if you want to record your lecture or take photos of any projected notes. But, of course, ask for permission first.
Wikipanion
Use: research database
Can be used on: iPhone/iPad/iPod touch
Price :free ( Wikipanion Plus for $4.99,or 31.87 yuan )
Now, you don’t necessarily have to go to a library or anywhere with computer services to do research work for your paper anymore. You can get access to the research databases just on your smart phone or tablet. Wikipanion gives you a simplified version of Wikipedia without leaving out any of the site’s extra features. The normal links that you’d see to each section of an article are no longer on the main screen. Instead, there’s small icon located at the bottom of the App, which can be used to access all the sections of an article. You can also open the links in Safari(苹果浏览器). According to the developers’ site, loading Wikipedia pages with Wikipanion is a lot faster than accessing the Wikipedia site from the iPhone’s browsers. To be honest, we agree.

23、The idiom “shoot for the stars” has just taken on a literal meaning for cancer survivor Hayley Arceneaux. On February 22, 2021, the Memphis, Tennessee, native was selected to be one of four crew members of the Space X Inspiration—the world’s first civilian astronaut mission. The 29-year-old will make further history as the youngest American—and the first with a prosthetic limb(假肢)—to travel to space.
“Until this mission, I could have never been an astronaut,” Hayley said. “This mission is opening space travel to people who are not physically perfect.”
Hayley’s space dream began two decades ago, following a visit to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, during a family vacation. “I got to see where the astronauts trained and of course wanted to be an astronaut after that—who doesn’t?” She recalls. However, the young girl’s dream was destroyed a year later when she was diagnosed with bone cancer—in her femur(股骨).
Fortunately, the often fatal disease had been caught early and the experts were able to limit its spread through chemotherapy(化疗) and by replacing the diseased bones with metal rods in her left leg. Given NASA’s strict medical requirements, Hayley knew that her dream of becoming an astronaut would probably never be realized. However, the young girl had already set her mind on a different, and equally challenging mission—working with young cancer patients at the hospital where she had been cured.
As it turned out, Hayley’s dream of going to space was far from over. On January 5th, 2021, she got a very surprise call from Jared Isaacman, CEO, asking her if she would like to go to space. “Immediately I said, ‘Yes, yes, absolutely!’” Arceneaux told AFP.
【1】What made Hayley decide to become an astronaut?

C.The suggestions of astronauts.
D.Her family’s influence.
【2】What can be inferred from the fourth paragraph?
A.Hayley got a heavy blow.
B.Hayley worked as a volunteer.
C.Hayley is a strong-willed person.
D.Hayley quit her dream completely.
【3】How did Hayley feel when receiving the call from Jared Isaacman?
A.Doubtful.
B.Amazed.
C.Guilty.
D.Concerned.
【4】Which column in a newspaper might the text come from?
A.Health.
B.Entertainment.
C.Sports.
D.Figures.
24、Most paper receipts (发票) are not recyclable. This is because they’re on thermal paper (热敏纸), which contains a chemical called BPA or sometimes BPS that cannot be easily removed from the paper during the recycling process. So we need a safe method of dealing with paper receipts.
Thermal printing uses heat from a printer head to print letters and numbers; no ink is used. This process requires the addition of BPA or BPS in the “free form”, which means that the chemicals are not bound to the soft paper. According to Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families, “The chemicals can easily transfer to anything a receipt touches.” They can be transferred from fingers to the mouth via food, or absorbed directly into the skin when held. BPA or BPS can affect brain development, the heart, lungs and reproductive abilities.
If thermal paper were to be recycled, it would contaminate other products in the recycling stream with BPA or BPS. These products are often turned into items such as facial tissues, paper towels and shopping bags and having BPA or BPS in them would mean our coming into even closer contact with the chemicals. Burning and composting are not an option either, as they would release BPA and BPS into the atmosphere or soil.
The only safe place to throw thermal paper receipts is in the rubbish, followed by immediate hand washing. It’s not ideal, but it is the most effective way to separate BPA and BPS from the environment. Sierra magazine offers a small bit of relief: “Throwing receipts is not the severest of wrong behaviors, since they amount to a tiny part of all paper consumed, according to industry sources.”
If you require a paper record for business purposes and if you often go to the same shops, ask if they consider switching to BPA- and BPS-free thermal paper. The best solution is to ask for receipts to be emailed, rather than printed. Not only will you avoid chemical exposure, but you will also decrease the demand for a paper product that drives deforestation every year; do away with that demand altogether and recycling becomes far less urgent.
【1】Why does thermal paper need BPA or BPS?
A.To react with ink freely.
B.To be easily recycled.
C.To be easily removed.
D.To make the writing come out.
【2】What can best replace the underlined word “contaminate” in Paragraph 3?
A.Pollute.
B.Transform.
C.Color.
D.Destroy.
【3】What is Sierra magazine’s attitude to putting thermal paper receipts in dustbins?
A.Opposed.
B.Cautious.
C.Supportive.
D.Ambiguous.
【4】Why does the writer write the text?
A.To state the functions of BPA and BPS.
B.To express concern over the use of BPA and BPS.
C.To prove the harm of thermal paper receipts.
D.To offer ways to tackle thermal paper receipts.
