二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Encouraging children to think about the feelings of others improves their creativity, new research suggests.

The findings are from a year-long study with Design and Technology (D&T) year 9 students (aged 13 to 14) at two London schools. Students at one school spent the year following course-required lessons, while the other group’s D&T lessons used some thinking tools which are aimed at developing students’ ability to have empathy, while solving real-world problems.

Both groups of students were judged for creativity at both the start and end of the school year using a perfect test.

The results showed a significant increase in creativity among students who use the thinking tools. At the start of the year, the creativity scores of the students who followed the required curriculum, were 11% higher than those following D&T lessons. By the end, however, the situation had completely changed: creativity scores among the D&T group were 78% higher than the required-course group.

The researchers also examined specific types within the test: such as “emotional expressiveness” and “open-mindedness”. Students from the D&T group again scored much higher in these types, showing that obvious progress in empathy was improving the overall creativity scores.

Nicholl, Senior Lecturer in D&T Education, said: “When I taught Design and Technology, I didn’t see children as someone who would one day do good to society; they were people who needed to be ready to go into the world at 18. Teaching children to understand another person’s feelings and experiences is about building a society where we appreciate each other’s point of view. Surely that is something we want education to do.”

【1】What’s the purpose of adopting the thinking tools?

A.To understand the feelings of others.

    B.To develop students’ creativity.

    C.To design new technologies.

    D.To deal with realistic problems.

【2】Which of the following is true about the study?

A.Both the groups took courses required by the curriculum.

B.The two groups of students were tested twice during the one-year study.

C.Students from the required course scored much higher in these specific types.

D.Creativity among the students from the D&T lessons has been slightly improved.

【3】What can be inferred from Nicholl’s words?

A.He is indifferent to whether the children benefit society.

B.The D&T lessons can be an effective way to improve grades.

C.Education is expected to build a society with different opinions appreciated.

D.The D&T lessons surely need to be taken before the children go into the world.

【4】Which can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Emotional Education Matters

    B.Teaching Students to Be Better

    C.Creativity Offers Great Chances

    D.Empathy Significantly Improves Creativity

  • 22、At 11:50, the bell rings. We students rush to the canteen at an amazing speed to enjoy our lunch. Have we ever stopped to see what happens after the meal? The ideal picture would be this: the chef sees his hard work being rewarded when piles of empty, used plates are returned to the kitchen after the meal. Sadly, this is not a common sight. We will find, instead, a mountain of leftovers in the waste bins. 【1】

This irresponsible food waste deed can never be tolerated. It reflects poorly on our hygiene (卫生) practice. 【2】   Let's learn from a Michelin-star Japanese chef who says that he will always respect the fish he cooks. Why? 【3】   He can fully understand the dangers which the fisherman constantly faces in order to supply the fish to him. Therefore, by not wasting any part of the fish, and by cooking excellently every time, the chef is appreciating the fisherman's efforts.

【4】   Just think of the poor and homeless who have not eaten for days due to a war or a natural disaster that may have wiped out homes and families. Think. Wouldn't it be good if we shared our food. instead of throwing away what we can't finish?

Now. the Environmental Club would like us students to help the needy. Instead of buying large quantities of food we might not be able to finish, buy a small amount; we can also pack food from home or buy canned food or biscuits to give to the needy.

【5】   Let's respect our food and share the joy of living well through giving food to those in need.

A.It's time to play our part to stop food wastage.

B.You can try your best to share food with the needy.

C.Some unfinished food is taken away to the dormitory.

D.Simply, he recognizes the sacrifices the fisherman makes.

E.Similarly, we should respect and appreciate our food more.

F.And some of these foods have not even touched the diner's lips.

G.It also shows that little thought has been put in preventing food wastage.

  • 23、Still seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.

    King's Art Centre

A day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artists on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an exhibition of four local artists.

You could attend a class teaching you how to 'learn from the masters' or get more creative with paint ---- free of charge.

The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there is a small fee.

    The Botanic Garden

The Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the research and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge University.

The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. The African plant produces red flowers above blue-green leaves, and is not one to miss.

Get to the display house to see Dionaea muscipula, a plant more commonly known as the Venus Flytrap that feeds on insects and other small animals.

The Garden is also a place for wildlife-enthusiasts. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called 'Hissing Sid' is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.

    Byron's Pool

Many stories surround Lord Byron's time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of "mess and drunkenness". However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I'm not just talking about the pet bear he kept in his roans. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.

It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron's Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village for afternoon tea. If you don't trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf- ----over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.

【1】As mentioned in the passage, there is a small charge for_____.

    A. attending the masters' class  B. working with local artists

    C. seeing an exhibition   D. learning life drawing

【2】 "Torch Aloe" and "Venus Flytrap" are_____.

    A. common insects B. wildlife-enthusiasts

    C. rarely-seen snakes  D. impressive plants

【3】 We can infer from the passage that Byron seemed_____.

    A. to fear pet bears   B. to be a heavy drinker

C.to like walking   D. to finish university in 1805

【4】What is the passage mainly about?

    A. A way to become creative in art.

    B. Some places for weekend break

    C. The colourful life in the countryside.

    D. Unknown stories of Cambridge University.

  • 24、   A new study shows that the increased heat from Arctic (北极的)rivers is making sea ice in the Arctic Ocean gradually disappear. The study published this week in Science Advance was led by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, together with other scientists in the United States, United Arab Emi rates , Finland and Canada.

According to the research, the main Arctic rivers bring more heat to the Arctic Ocean than they did in 1980. River heat is one of the reasons that cause sea ice loss of the Arctic Ocean. That loss is equal to about 120,000 square miles of 1-mcter thick ice. "If Alaska were covered by 1-meter thick icc. 20% of Alaska would be gone," explained Igor Polyakov, a re- searcher at the University of Alaska Fairbanks' International Arctic Research Center.

Rivers have the greatest influence during spring. The wanning water pours into the ice covered Arctic Ocean and spreads below the ice slowly destroying it. Once the sea ice melts(融化), the warm water makes the temperature go up. The research found that much more river heat energy entered the air. Since air is mobile, this means river heat can influence areas of the Arctic far from river deltas (三角洲).

The influence was the most prominent in the Siberian Arctic, where several large rivers go into the Arctic Ocean. Canada's Mackenzie River is the only river large enough to contribute to sea ice meh near Alaska, but the state's smaller rivers are also a source of heat.

Polyakov says that rising global air temperatures will continue to warm Arctic rivers in the future. As rivers heat up, more warm water will flow into the Arctic Ocean, melting more sea ice,

1What does the increased heat from Arctic rivers cause?

    A.Dry weather in the Arctic.

B.A strange disease in the Arctic.

C.The gradual loss of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean.

D.The death of fish in the Arctic Ocean.

2What can we learn from paragraph 2?

    A.Alaska will disappear.

B.There's more and more sea ice in the Arctic Ocean.

C.10% of sea ice in the Arctic Ocean melts each day.

D.Arctic rivers bring more heat to the Arctic Ocean.

3What does the underlined word "prominent" in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Obvious. B.Important. C.Famous. D.Generous.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.Arctic Rivers Will Disappear

B.Arctic Rivers Are Melting Arctic Sea Ice

C.Arctic Rivers Will Create a New River Delta

D.Arctic Rivers Bring More Sea Animals to the Arctic Ocean
