二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、With the social media freely available, I've realized how easy it is to become a jealous cow. The truth is that however much I remind myself of the many wonderful things I have in my life, there are still moments when I look at those around me and feel bitterly upset by their success.

It's a horrible thing to admit! In an ideal world, I'd never want to be jealous of another person's achievements and I'd want to celebrate the successes of my friends. But sometimes it's hard, even when we want to. But I don't want to live my life as a jealous cow, and I assume you don't either.

It's easier to celebrate other people's wins if you celebrate your own. How often do we take the time to enjoy our success rather than instantly move onto the next thing we want to achieve? Last year, I decided to write a book. It was the only professional goal I set for myself and, while it tired me out, I got there. But as soon as it was done, I started planning my next goal-making the book a success. As I saw other people publishing books, I stopped celebrating and instead began to fear that mine wouldn't compete.

When I told a friend how I was feeling, she reminded me how much easier it is to clap for someone else when we also clap for ourselves. So, I took myself out for lunch, ordered a glass of wine and wrote myself a congratulations card. When I saw all those other books being written on my social media, I felt proud of each and every one of us who had battled to the end of the word count.

The other trick for celebrating other people's success is to realize that there is no limit on success. We can make more, which means that while it might seem as if others have everything and we have nothing, the reality is that life turns quickly and our luck could change at any time. If others have achieved those things, we can too. When we celebrate others, we're acknowledging their achievements but also cheering for ourselves as well as for our hopes and dreams and our belief that we can make them happen. And hopefully, when we do, those people will cheer for us too.

【1】What can we infer from Paragraph 1?

A.Social media is the source of the author's jealousy.

B.Frequent successes on social media encourage envy.

C.It is a pleasure to face others' successes on social media.

D.People tend to be crazy about immediate success online.

【2】As far as the author is concerned, what should we do after achieving success?

    A.Appreciate what's been done.

B.Show it off on social media.

    C.Reflect on gains and losses.

    D.Waite for others' congratulations.

【3】One of the keys to removing jealousy lies in.

    A.pursuing those achievable goals

B.devoting yourself to the next goal

    C.admitting personal incompetence

    D.changing your attitude to success

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

    A.I'm so happy for us!

    B.What a considerate friend!

    C.I don't care about it!

    D.How selfless you can be!

  • 22、   Fictional British detective Sherlock Holmes is probably one of the most popular and intelligent detectives in literary history. Known for his brilliant analytical skills and ability to handle complex clues(线索), the detective holds the world record for the most described literary human character in filmTV. Thus, it’s not surprising to hear that the Royal Mint, responsible for producing coins in Britain, has honored the detective with a commemorative(纪念性的)coin.

Shown in May, in honor of his creator Conan Doyles 160th birthday, the 50-pence coin gives an outline of Holmes, surrounding Holmes’picture are some of the related novels, like The Hound of the Baskervilles.

The tiny lettering of the books titles, which require a magnifying glass(放大镜) to read, may seem like a mistake caused by the attempt to put too much in a small space. However, the coin’s designer, Steve Raw, says he deliberately put them all there to bring out the “inside detective”in fans. He explains, “Naturally, the only way to deal with the unknown text is by using that important piece of equipment always carried by the detective: a magnifying glass.”

The Royal Mint plans to put the 50p coin in general circulation later this year. However, fans hoping to add a new one to their Sherlock Holmes collection can also get an uncirculated version for £10 from the Royal Mint’s website. What are also available are 600 limited edition Silver Proof coins for £55 each and 400 limited edition Gold Proof coins for £795 each.

Born in 1859, Conan Doyle was a trained doctor running a clinic, before showing his love for writing. Holmes’ character was based on Joseph Bell, an intelligent scientist good at observing and crime solving, whom Conan Doyle studied under. Following the success of A Study in Scarlet, Conan Doyle produced many other stories.

Britain’s fun tradition of putting fictional characters on currency began in 2016, when the Royal Mint celebrated Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday with coins containing characters from the authors’ story. The Royal Mint thinks highly of the tradition. We wonder who will be next!

1Why does the author give an introduction to Holmes in Paragraph 1?

A.To present the glory of British literature.

B.To show commemorative coins’ link to literature.

C.To state people’s affection for detective novels.

D.To analyze causes of Holmes being honored on a coin.

2What leads to the lettering of the titles being so tiny?

A.The mistake made in the design.

B.The limitation of the coin’s space.

C.The aim to better present Holmes to people.

D.The wish to promote more of Conan’s novels.

    3What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.The Royal Mint’s plans for marketing the 50p coin.

B.Available versions of commemorative coins of Holmes.

C.The great value of the new commemorative coins

D.The commemorative coins’ popularity with the public

4What will the Royal Mint’s future commemorative coins be about?

    A.Some funny characters.

    B.Characters from fictional stories.

    C.Beatrix Potter.

    D.Old British traditions.

  • 23、Does happiness have a scent?

When someone is happy, can you smell it?

You can usually tell when someone is happy based on seeing them smile, heating them laugh or perhaps from receiving a big hug. But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell, reports Phys.org.

For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period.

Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, apparently because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signaling—though it's unclear why only men were chosen to produce the scents.

Researchers found that the behavior of the women after smelling the scents--particularly their facial expressions--indicated a relationship between the emotional states of the men who produced the sweat and the women who sniffed them.

"Human sweat produced when a person is happy brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell," said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey.

This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.

Researchers have yet to isolate(分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies   (香味疗法) could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.

Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us.

【1】What is the main finding of the new research?

    A.Men produce more sweats.

    B.Negative emotions have a smell.

C.Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.

D.Women have a better sense of smell.

【2】The underlined part "abstain from" in Paragraph 3 probably means _______.

    A.avoid

    B.practice

    C.continue

    D.try

【3】What is the application value of the new research?

A.Perfumes could help people understand each other.

B.Some smells could be developed to better our mood.

C.Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.

D.Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.

【4】We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.

A.happiness comes from a scent of sweat

    B.positive energy can deepen understanding

    C.people need more emotional communication

D.social surroundings can influence our emotions

  • 24、New Yorkers and visitors to the Big Apple will get to ring in the Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year in the USA, in style with a fireworks display on the Hudson River set to music written by Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun.

The display is part of the second annual “Happy Chinese New Year: Fantastic Art China” festival held in New York on February 5-10, 2016. The China Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), the USA-China Cultural Institute and the Cultural Associate of the Committee of 100 announced this year’s events on November 18 at a press conference at the Lincoln Center.

The “Fantastic Art China” festival will feature a larger and more diverse series of artistic and cultural events across New York’s top cultural venues (地点) and landmarks, including the Lincoln Center, Empire State Building and Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

This year’s theme focuses on exploring the complicated relationship between sound and image, said Professor Yu Ding from CAFA, who is also president of Fantastic Art China and in charge of the festival’s design. Lunar New Year, which celebrates the “Year of the Monkey” in 2016, is an opportunity to bring China’s modern art to mainstream America, and the festival serves as an innovative approach to establishing cultural exchange between China and New York City, Yu said.

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Tan Dun’s music is a new edition that will be featured  at several venues, including a major art exhibition at the Javits Center, events at the Lincoln Center and the fireworks display on the Hudson, which will take place on the evening of February 6. Five barges (游艇) on the river will launch the fireworks designed by CAFA that will tell a story about celebration and conservation.

“We Chinese are fond of nature, so the best way to celebrate the Lunar New Year is to salute with the sounds of nature, such as sounds of water, stone and bamboo,” said Tan Dun at the press conference, “And it will be fun to use the music of water during the fireworks display.”

In addition to the fireworks, a special lighting show at the Empire State Building will shine on New York City during the holiday.

Chinese New Year is being recognized as a public school holiday for the first time in New York. Children from the National Dance Institute, which represents 75 schools, will perform traditional Chinese dances at the Lincoln Center and the Javits Center. And, in celebration of the “Year of the Monkey”, events will feature a conservation message about the endangered golden monkey in China.

【1】The theme of this year’s celebration is centered on ________.

    B. diversity of Chinese traditional festivals

    C. endangered species and environmental protection

    D. cultural exchange between China and America

    D. taking a week off and organizing Chinese dance contests

【3】What does the underlined word “shine on” (in Para. 7) most probably mean?

    A. lighten.   B. surround.

    C. decorate. D. broaden.

【4】This passage is written mainly in order to ________.
