二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A team of scientists and entrepreneurs has announced a plan to bring back the woolly mammoth (猛犸象) — in the form of an elephant-mammoth hybrid (杂交动物) — within just six years. Texan technology entrepreneur Ben Lamm, and George Church, a biologist from Harvard Medical School, have set up Colossal, a new company that wants to bring several extinct species back to life — starting with the woolly mammoth, the last of which died around 4,000 years ago.

Church and Lamm believe an elephant-mammoth hybrid could help restore the Arctic tundra and slow climate change. The animals could do this by knocking down thin, low-oxygen trees, allowing the growth of grasslands that would trap carbon and reflect sunlight, keeping the ground cool.

To create the new elephant-mammoth hybrid, the team hopes to edit the embryo (胚胎) of an Asian elephant to carry mammoth-like DNA. Another possible plan involves taking skin cells from elephants and turning them into stem cells with mammoth DNA, which could then be developed into an embryo in the lab. The embryo would then be placed into a female elephant or an artificial womb.

"Our goal is to make a cold-resistant elephant, but it is going to look and behave like a mammoth," Church told The Guardian.

However, while similar techniques have been used with pigs and sheep, they have never been used with elephants, much less woolly mammoths. And even if the team succeeds, many experts are skeptical about their objectives. Victoria Herridge of the Natural History Museum in London told The Guardian that trying to improve the Arctic environment using a herd of mammoths isn't realistic."The scale at which you'd have to do this experiment is enormous. You are talking about hundreds of thousands of mammoths," she said. Gareth Phoenix from the University of Sheffield also said that trees and moss protect permafrost (永冻土层), so if they are destroyed by mammoths, it would have the opposite of the desired effect.

【1】What is the purpose of bringing woolly mammoth back to life?

    A.To restore the environment.

    B.To save endangered animals.

    C.To increase wildlife species.

    D.To change the climate.

【2】What will the scientists do to create the new hybrid?

A.They will make an elephant carry mammoth DNA.

B.They will take DNA from the stem cells of a mammoth.

C.They will change an elephant embryo with mammoth DNA.

D.They will preserve the DNA of an elephant and a mammoth.

【3】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The intention of bringing the mammoth back to life is challenged.

B.The conditions of bringing the mammoth back to life are not good.

C.It is impossible to bring the mammoth back to life in 6 years.

D.It is dangerous to bring the mammoth back to life.

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Culture and Entertainment.

    B.Language and Education.

  • 22、   Cybercrime refers to any criminal offence related to the Internet. Internet crimes have been classified into four categories. First, they can be related to a lack of proper Internet security, such as downloading or deleting other people’s files without permission, and spreading computer viruses. The second are crimes usually committed without a computer, but can occur over the Internet. For some criminals use the Internet to cheat others of their money. Third, websites which offense information or encourage hatred and violence are named. Last, there are related to intellectual property (intellectual property is a design, patent, book, etc. law prevents other people from copying).

All Internet users are affected by cybercrime in one way or another. However, crime against a private organization in the USA, showed that 45.6 percent of the 351 biggest company government agencies had had their security systems broken into in the previous year. Security consultants tell us that cybercrime is costing firms worldwide hundreds of billions of dollars every.

Considering how bad the situation with cybercrime against companies has become, many people wonder why so little is known about this. The main reason is that most cybercrime is not reported. Until now, most companies have been unwilling to report cases of cybercrime. They fear that by doing so, they will lose customers, who may think that the company cannot protect their confidential information or their money.

All of this is made more difficult by the legal situation regarding cybercrime. Cybercrime is so new that many governments have not yet passed laws against it, and there are many holes in the legal systems. In addition, most countries do not have arrangements for dealing with suspects from other countries who may have committed cybercrime. Thus, it is difficult to catch criminals of cybercrime.

The only answer to this problem is international cooperation. Governments must join forces to keep up with the advances in technology used by the criminals. It is also important to draft new laws and negotiate international standards for fighting cybercrime.

【1】Which of the following can be considered as cybercrime?

    A.Copying others’ public files.

    B.Creating computer virus.

C.Sending hatred words to a friend.

    D.Stealing from online banks.

【2】How does the author prove that cybercrime is worse to large companies?

    A.By comparing the changing numbers.

    B.By listing the survey data.

    C.By analyzing the heavy loss.

    D.By adding background information.

【3】Which of the following best explains “confidential” underlined in Paragraph 3?

    A.Legal.

    B.Valuable.

    C.Private.

    D.Correct.

【4】What is the author’s advice to prevent cybercrime

A.Countries work together following the same law.

B.Abroad cybercriminals should be sent back.

C.The lawyers should learn more about laws.

D.The government should flow the law.

  • 23、As smartphone users know, a sleeping device can still consume the power of a battery. One solution for extending the battery life of wireless devices is to add a wake - up receiver that can tun on a shut - off device.

Angad Rekhi, a university student, and Amin Arabians, an assistant professor have developed a wake - up receiver that turns on a device in response to ultrasonic (超声波的)signals. By working at a significantly smaller wavelength and switching from radio waves to ultrasound, this receiver is much smaller than similar wake - up receivers.

This wake - up receiver has many potential applications, particularly in designing the next generation of networked devices, including the smart devices that can communicate directly with one another without human’s role.

Once attached to a device, a wake - up receiver listens for a unique ultrasonic pattern that tells it when to turn the device on. It only needs a very small amount of power to maintain this constant listening, so it still saves energy.

The designing of these receivers presented a number of challenges. “Miniaturizing wake - up receivers and driving down power consumption while maintaining or extending range are fundamental challenges,” Angad said. “By doing so, the receivers can be small but powerful enough to fit in with the environment.”

By comparison, the ultrasound wake - up receiver requires a battery but has much greater range than the wirelessly powered devices, These two technologies - wireless power and wake - up receivers would likely serve different purposes, but both indicate a turning point in devices that make up the Internet of things.

“In light of a long - promised future where interconnected, autonomous, widespread and remarkable technologies make life easier, the networked devices available now, like video doorbells and app - enabled lights, seem like rather slight advances” the researchers explained. They believe technologies could help cross the gap between the Internet of things as we know it and the Internet of things at their best.

【1】How does the wake - up receiver work?

A.By getting permission from the owner and turning on the device.

B.By picking up the radio sound and turning it into the ultrasonic signal.

C.By sensing the signal and turning on the device automatically.

D.By receiving the ultrasonic signal and reminding its owner.

【2】What is the main advantage of the wake - up receiver?

    A.It can receive signals quickly.

    B.It's remotely controlled.

    C.It's energy - efficient.

    D.It can communicate by itself.

【3】What can the wake - up receiver be applied for?

    A.wake - up smart devices

    B.ultrasonic devices

    C.wirelessly powered devices

    D.future networked devices

【4】The underlined word “miniaturizing” in Paragraph 5 can be replaced by “________”.

    A.reducing the size of

    B.making full use of

    C.designing the style of

    D.checking the function of

【5】What is Angad’s attitude towards the future of the networked devices?

    A.Critical.

    B.Positive.

    C.Indifferent.

    D.Objective

  • 24、The “Phone Stack ()”Game

Whenever Michael Carl, the fashion market director at Vanity Fair, goes out to dinner with friends, he plays something called the “phone stack”game:Everyone places their phones in the middle of the table; whoever looks at their device before the check arrives picks up the bill. As smartphones continue to burrow (钻入) their way into our lives, and wearable devices like Google Glass threaten to eat into our personal space even further, overburdened users are carving out their own device-free zones with special tricks and life hacks.

“Disconnecting is a luxury that we all need,” said Lesley M. M. Blume, a New York writer who keeps her phone away from the dinner table at home. “The expectation that we must always be available to employers, colleague, family: It creates a real obstacle in trying to set aside private time. But that private time is more important than ever.” Much of the digital detoxing (戒瘾) is centred on the home, where urgent e-mails from co-workers, texts from friends, Instagram photos from acquaintances and updates on Facebook get together to disturb domestic quietness.

A popular method is to appoint a kind of cellphone lockbox, like the milk tin that Brandon Holley, the former editor of lucky magazine, uses. “If my phone is buzzing or lighting up, it’s still a distraction, so it goes in the box,” said Ms. Holley, who lives in a row house in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with her son, Smith, and husband, John. “It’s not something I want my kid to see.” Sleep is a big factor, which is why some people draw the cellphone-free line at the bedroom. “I don’t want to sleep next to something that is a charged ball of information with photos and e-mails,” said Peter Som, the fashion designer, who keeps his phone plugged in the living room overnight. “It definitely is a head clearer and describes daytime and sleep time clearly.”

Households with young children are especially mindful about being overconnected, with parents sensitive to how children may imitate bad habits. But it’s not just inside the home where users are separating themselves from the habit. Cellphone overusers are making efforts to disconnect in social settings, whether at the request of the host or in the form of friendly competition. The phone-stack game is a lighthearted way for friends to police against rude behavior when eating out. The game gained popularity after Brian Perez, a dancer in Los Angeles, posted the idea online.

【1】What might be the reason for Michael Carl to play the “phone stack” game?

A.His friends aren’t willing to pay for the meal voluntarily.

B.He wants to do some funny things with those phones.

C.He has been fed up with digital devices being present everywhere.

D.The wearable devices have brought threats to his privacy.

【2】Why is it difficult for people to break away from their digital devices at home?

A.Because they have to do some work at home.

B.Because they are expected to be always available to the outside.

C.Because people have been addicted to digital devices.

D.Because digital devices can enrich people’s family life.

【3】What does Peter Som do to ensure his sleeping quality at night?

A.He puts his phone in the living room.

B.He ignores any information in the phone.

C.He deletes all information in his phone.

D.He puts his phone in a lockbox.

【4】Why does the phone-stack game become popular as soon as it is posted online?

A.The game helps create a harmonious relationship among friends.

B.The game makes the host get along well with the guest.

C.The game can prevent children from imitating their parents’ behavior.

D.The game meets people’s demand for keeping away from phones easily.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

    Raj learns a lesson

Raj is a middle-aged man. Although he was born in a poor family, he was raised well by his father and mother. His father owned a welding (焊接) shop, and used to work for more than 12 hours a day, so that his family could lead a comfortable life.

However, Raj’s father could not earn sufficient money to provide a decent life to his family. Raj was an average student in school, and used to score around 70 percent marks. Raj’s dream was to become a doctor. Since his marks weren’t very high, he could not get the desired course that he wanted to study. Instead, he joined a bachelor’s degree course, completed the course successfully, and got a job in a company.

In order not to depend on Raj, his father continued to work in his shop. After getting a permanent job, Raj’s parents wanted him to marry. He got married to a girl from his native town, and meanwhile was promoted in his job. After a few years, his wife gave birth to beautiful twin boys.

Later, Raj began to earn a handsome salary, and started to live luxuriously. He bought a new house and a new car. Some of the luxuries were really unnecessary. Almost 6 to 7 years later, Raj was neither able to manage all the household expenses, nor pay for the children’s education and other basic necessities.

It so happened that Raj’s father fell sick, and as a result, could not continue his work. He requested Raj to give some money for his treatment and other household expenses. Raj, who was already suffering from financial crisis, not only shouted at his parents but also complained to his parents, “You never give me what I needed and wanted and it took me more than 10 years to get settled. Now, while I am again struggling for money, you are not doing anything to help me, but instead are a burden to me! So, please don’t come to me again.”

    His parents were left shocked.
