  • 21、A new mini-program in WeChat is relieving people from the pain of long queues at nucleic acid testing sites in Beijing’s Zhongguancun. The mini-program, designed by the Institute of Automation at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became available to the public via WeChat on Monday. It shows the locations of testing sites, site testing window numbers, opening times, the real-time number of people in line and estimated wait times.

Waiting in line for a nucleic acid test used to be an hour-long task in some more densely populated areas in Zhongguancun. “There were usually hundreds of people lining up at the site near my company building because residents and people working in the vicinity all came to that site,” said a man surnamed Qi who works at a science institute in the subdistrict. “I can’t choose my time to do the test, but now with the mini-program I can select a site with fewer people waiting and get tested within just a few minutes,” he said.

Li Bingduo, director of Zhongguancun’s public security office, said that despite there being enough sites and a quick testing process, efficiency is still low. That’s why they came up with the idea for the mini-program. “Waiting in long lines may interrupt people’s work and students’ online classes. The problem has to be solved by smoother communication channels. Otherwise, residents randomly choose nucleic acid locations and time periods, resulting in the uneven distribution of crowds. Sites with more people have to be equipped with more manpower and material resources and potential safety hazards loom when people gather in large crowds,” he said.

Li’s team put out a request to see if any company in the subdistrict could find a solution to this problem and the Institute of Automation took up the baton. Wen Dayong, an associate researcher with the institute, and two of his colleagues completed the mini-program by Monday after only receiving the task on Friday night. “We burned the midnight oil to get the program done. We wanted to make it available to the public as soon as possible,” he said.

【1】What can we know by using this new mini-program?

    A.The number of people infected.

    B.Opening times of every company.

    C.Subway stations across Beijing.

D.The locations of testing sites in Zhongguancun.

【2】Which of the following may Li Bingduo agree with?

A.More testing sites should be put into operation.

B.Waiting in long lines is unavoidable in Beijing.

C.Large crowds at testing sites results in hidden risks.

D.Students shouldn’t engage in online classes.

【3】What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Burned up.

    B.Stayed up.

    C.Used up.

    D.Made up.

【4】What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To make Zhongguancun known to the world.

    B.To introduce a new WeChat mini-program.

C.To help residents to choose testing sites wisely.

D.To tell us how to develop a new mini-program.

  • 23、You may have experienced the frustration(挫败感)of being slapped with a parking fine(罚款)or finding your car held firmly in the place after leaving it parked precariously(不安全的) for a couple of minutes. But now a high-tech car sticker that's designed to be stuck to a car’s windscreen, could help motorists avoid such a situation by allowing a traffic warden(管理员)to get in touch with them.

The TowStop sticker sends a text message to a driver when it is touched by a traffic warden, to allow motorists to send a reply and give them time to move their car immediately. It’s designed to save drivers time and money by giving them a chance to move their car instead of having it towed(拖) away but relies on the good will of traffic wardens. Frankfurt-based IT consultant(顾问), Daniel Kalliontzis, came up with the idea and is raising funds on Indiegogo to put his €54 (£43) sticker into production.

Car owners can buy the sticker and place it inside their car's windscreen, having set it up with important information, such as their phone number. The message will ask them to move their car immediately .The driver could then type a reply for the warden using their smartphone, which will appear on the sticker's screen. They may choose to write something along the lines of back in two minutes in a bid to avoid a fine.

The smart sticker system will rely on the good will of traffic wardens and critically, a German law. The law states: An officer has to choose the most efficient and inexpensive way for the car owner to remove the vehicle. It could be cheaper for the authorities to contact the driver than to tow his car.

【1What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

    A. To arouse readers’ interest in the new invention.

    B. To tell readers some ways of parking cars.

    C. To show drivers how to avoid parking fine.

    D. To disclose(揭示)how traffic wardens fine drivers.

【2Daniel Kalliontzis came up with the idea of the slicker so that______.

    A. traffic can be smooth

    B. drivers can avoid being fined

    C. cars can be put in safe places

    D. laws can be carried out

【3If traffic warden wants to send a text message to the driver, he should_______.

    A. slap the windscreen   B. strike the wheel

    C. use a smartphone D. touch the sticker

【4】From the passage we know that________.

    A. a German traffic warden is required to remind car owners to move their cars

    B. the TowStop sticker will cost drivers much time and money

    C. not many drivers will mind being fined

    D. car owners must buy the stickers by law

  • 24、Online thrift (节俭) store thredUP has released its tenth annual Resale Report. The study, which assesses trends in the secondhand clothing industry, has an obviously positive tone. Resale is booming in the United States, as well as globally, and the secondhand market in the US is expected to more than double by 2026, reaching an impressive valuation of $82 billion.

This is serious growth that indicates a real shift in the way people approach shopping for clothes. For most, it’s a way to save money in an inflationary (通货膨胀) economy. Forty-four percent of shoppers say they’re cutting back on buying clothing-more than any category apart from restaurants. Some say secondhand is enabling them to keep enjoying the brands they love.

When choosing what to buy, people are increasingly careful about what can be resold. More than one-fifth of Gen Z (网络新生代) shoppers said they’ll pay more for an item that they know they can resell, and 36% of Gen Z shoppers stock and clear their closets at the same monthly or weekly rate. More than half resold clothing last year. As resale becomes more accessible thanks to mobile technology and online platforms, increasing numbers of customers are keen to turn over their closets, which fuels the industry and keeps the market full of fresh finds, bringing people back for more.

Secondhand helps to relieve people’s climate-related concerns. Thrifting is far better for the environment than buying new. As thredUP reported in 2021,buying used reduces an item’s carbon footprint by 82%. Choosing used over new displaces 17.4 pounds of CO2 emissions. It requires far less water and energy to produce, and it spares that item from going to landfill, where it will break down and give off methane, a greenhouse gas more powerful than CO2.

It’s great to hear such positive news. Thrifting is a no-brainer, when you stop to think about it-well-made and good-looking fashion that helps the planet while saving us money. The more mainstream it can get, the better off we’ll all be.

【1】What does the booming of resale mean to most shoppers according to the text?

    A.Reducing expenses.

    B.Bringing down inflation.

    C.Focusing less on brands.

    D.Eating out more in restaurants.

【2】What promotes the development of the resale industry?

A.Scientific development makes resale easier and more convenient.

B.Many Gen Z shoppers choose used over new.

C.Buying used has become a mainstream.

D.Cleaning the closets is more frequent.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude to the resale of secondhand clothing?

    A.Disapproving.

    B.Objective.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Favorable.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Secondhand Clothing Improves Climate

    B.Secondhand Market Benefits Americans

C.ThredUP Released A New Resale Report

D.Secondhand Clothing Is A Hot Market
