二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、My folks bought their first house in the early 1940s after Dad got a better job in Marquette, Michigan. We lived just inside the city limits in what was still a rural area.

In the spring of 1948, when I was 6 years old, my parents bought a calf (小牛) to replace our cow, which had been killed the year before. So one day we drove to a local farm and returned with a white and brown calf we named Tubby.

We didn’t own a truck, so Tubby rode home in the backseat of Dad’s car with my 9-year-old brother Steve, and me. As you can imagine, the trip was a lot of fun for us kids.

Later that summer, Mom thought it would be cute to take a picture of me sitting on Tubby’s back. All went well unti1 the snap of the camera shutter sent Tubby charging off on a run, with me holding on for dear life. I lasted for about 30 feet before I hit the ground. Mom was quick enough to shoot a follow-up picture, so we had photos of me both on and off Tubby!

When summer had passed, the day arrived for poor Tubby to fill our freezer I must have been somewhere else with my Mom on the fateful day, because I have no memory of how it happened. All I knew was that the barn was empty, and that we had plenty of meat for dinners.

I hadn’t lived on a farm like my mother, so I didn’t understand that what happened to Tubby was not unusual. Livestock aren’t meant to be pets, and most farm kids know and accept that truth.

Whenever we had beef for dinner, I would tearfully, “Is this Tubby” This went on for a couple of weeks until Dad had finally had enough and declared, “No more cows!” That made me feel a little better about poor Tubby.

【1】The writer’s parents bought Tubby so that ________.

A.they would have more cows in the future

B.it would provide their children with milk

C.the family would have enough meat to eat

D.they would no longer feel lonely on the farm

【2】Which word can be used to describe the author’s mom?

    A.Serious.

    B.Strong-willed.

    C.Careless.

    D.Quick-minded.

【3】We learn from the passage that ________.

A.Steve was not so fond of Tubby as his younger brother

B.the author had much trouble with Tubby in the summer

C.the author’s mom thought it natural to kill a cow for meat

D.the author was pleased to see their freezer filled with beef

【4】We can most probably read the text above in a website on ________.

  • 22、   China’s self-developed floating airship Jimu No.1 has set a new world record, reaching an altitude of 7,003 meters on May 23rd in Southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.

Jimu No.1 is a lighter-than-air ship with a volume(体积)of 2,300 cubic meters. Its surface is made of composite fabric(复合织物), which can withstand low temperatures of -70℃. Equipped with scientific instruments, it conducts upper air observations and collects weather data.

Floating airships play a significant role in high-altitude observations and tracking climate and geological changes. Compared with observation stations on the ground, they can make stereoscopic(有立体效果的)observations that provide more accurate data as the airships can directly travel to test areas and are less affected by buildings and local terrain(地形).

Jimu No.1 is being used in a monitoring project, part of China’s second Qinghai-Tibet research mission, which aims to help researchers understand the source of the water supply and water transmission routes on the plateau. Named “the Third Pole” and “the Water Tower of Asia,” the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau provides water to many Asian rivers, making it an ideal place for carrying out high-altitude projects and conducting research in water, ecology and human activities.

Jimu No.1 has been breaking records. It set the previous records of over 6,200 meters in January, and 6,300 meters in April. And floating airships are expected to reach an altitude of 10,000 meters in the future.

A.The exact weight of Jimu No.1.

B.The highest speed of Jimu No.1.

    C.The characteristic of composite fabric.

D.The working rules of the instruments.

【2】Floating airships beat ground observation stations in that ________.

A.air currents can be better observed by airships

B.airships won’t be affected by buildings and local terrain

C.ground stations only track climate and geological changes

D.data from airships’ stereoscopic observations are more accurate

【3】What field may research in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau cover?

①water   ②poles   ③water towers   ④ecology   ⑤human activities

    A.①②③

    B.①④⑤

    C.③④⑤

    D.②③④

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.China is carrying out a mission in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

B.China’s self-developed floating airship reaches record height

C.The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is ideal for high-altitude research

D.Floating airships have a long way to go in upper air observations

  • 23、   Winston Churchill was born into a famous family. His father was a successful politician.

However, as a boy, Churchill was considered a slow learner in school.

Later he entered the Army and saw action in various countries.

In October 1900, Churchill began his political career. For the next sixty years Churchill’s work as a great politician was both brighter and more difficult than his father had been.

In 1939, Germany attacked Poland. Churchill prepared to fight. In 1940 he became the Prime Minster of England.

France fell. The Germans fought their way through Western Europe. It looked as if Britain was about to lose the war. Was it not possible to ask for peace, and listen to Hitler?

Churchill spoke, “I have nothing to offer but blood, hard work, tears and sweat()….You ask what is our policy(政策)? I will tell you, it is to fight, by sea, by land and air, with all our force and with all the strength that God can give us. You ask what is our aim? I can answer in one word: victory.”

The Germans began moving their armies to the French coast and prepared to go to war with the British. The British had not enough guns to go round. Churchill gave the answer: “We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the coasts, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the field and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never give up.”

By his courage and hard work Churchill heartened his people and other nations fighting together against Hitler. Victory finally came when the Germans lost World War II.

Churchill died in 1965 and was given a State Funeral(国葬). This was a fitting payment to one of all the greatest men the world had ever seen.

C.helped his father in his career(职业;生涯) D.had little interest in politics

5We can infer from the passage that ________.

A.finally Hitler had to give in to Churchill

B.Churchill asked to be given a State Funeral before he died

C.countries which won World War II held a State Funeral in honor of the statesman

D.Churchill was a man of great determination

  • 24、   One of the tallest wooden buildings in Europe, a 98m timber (木材)mixture skyscraper, is to rise in Berlin.

The 29-storey WoHo tower, to be designed by a firm of Norwegian architects, is intended to be a “light-house project” for low-carbon construction, towering over Potsdamer Platz and the Landwehr Canal.

Its core, including lifts and a staircase, is to be built around concrete structure but the rest of the building, including flats, offices, cafes and a kindergarten, will be fashioned down wooden beams (横梁)and panels.

“As Norwegians, we are used to working a lot with timber,” Nicolai Riise, CEO of the Mad Architects' Practice said.

“The thing about timber is that its carbon footprint is close to zero and that it's a fantastic material to build with. If you look at this in a broader way, it's one of the ways we are going to be able to beat the climate crisis.”

Wooden skyscrapers, once regarded as a pipe dream, have become realistic with the coming of cross-laminated (交叉叠合)building techniques and more flexible planning laws. Because these structures' parts are fit with care, they can be far lighter than their concrete equivalents (同等物)and are thought to be relatively resistant to fire. A cubic meter of wood can also take an estimated ton of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Larger wooden structures are planned elsewhere. London is examining blueprints for a 300-meter Oakwood Tower. A project in Tokyo could rise to 350m.

【1】What is special about the WoHo Tower?

A.It will serve as a light house.

B.Its core is to be built with timber.

C.It is designed for a Norwegian firm.

D.It will be a tall timber mixture building.

【2】Why do Norwegians prefer timber when constructing buildings?

    A.It is a flexible material.

    B.It is easy to collect.

    C.It is environmentally-friendly.

D.It can be cut into pieces.

【3】What do the underlined words “a pipe dream” in paragraph 6 probably mean?

    A.A nightmare.

    B.Something practical.

    C.A piece of cake.

    D.Something impossible

【4】What makes it a reality to build wooden skyscrapers?

    A.Flexible ideas.

    B.The concrete equivalents.

    C.Fire resistant materials.

    D.New building techniques.
