二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I'd shared my home with scorpions(非洲蝎子)in Africa before. But when we moved to Costa Rica which was an insect center, there were scorpions under the fridge, a stick insect and a tarantula(狼蛛), the size of a dinner plate, wandering around the courtyard.

To begin with, I was scared to death, and got away from them as quickly as possible. But slowly things changed. With no TV, no radio and often staying at our house for days in this rainforest, I started to get used to these uninvited visitors. It was for a long time that I was gradually used to them. Then I kept an eye out for them and finally was delighted to see them no matter what they were.

Soon when a creature came to visit, I'd call the kids over, take photos and even pose with them. We'd try to work out what these creatures were doing, see where they were going and pick them up if they seemed safe. Not all the wildlife was traditionally frightening. We gently held panic-stricken hummingbirds that were trapped in the house and set them back in the wild. We listened out for the woodpeckers(啄木鸟)that decorated our garden. We practiced shouting like howling monkeys. Those feathered and furry creatures were easy to love, and we also grew to love the seemingly unlovable when traveling in Costa Rica.

Sweeping away the terror from this fresh new love, I started emailing photos of my new insect friends to human friends and family overseas. I was as proud as any new mother with my latest discoveries. Then when their replies came back saying “Disgusting!", “Ewww” or “Nasty”, I was saddened, and I could hardly remember that not so long ago I would also have been disgusted by the sight of a ten-inch cricket(蟋蟀)on my dining table.

Travel changes you in ways you never expect, and changes things you never want to change. You may not imagine you could find beauty in an insect, if you look closely at it there. You may not think you could love the unlovable. And if you take time to wonder and open your heart to the possibility, love can spread in anywhere.

【1】What do we know about the author when she arrived in Costa Rica?

A.She missed TV and radio very much.

B.She quickly got used to the life there.

C.She enjoyed sharing her home with insects.

D.She was afraid of the insects at first.

【2】Why was the author sad after getting the replies to her photos?

A.Because the insects looked really disgusting.

B.Because she was not so good at taking photos.

C.Because her love to insects was not understood.

D.Because she missed her friends and family overseas.

【3】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The insects are not poisonous as imagined.

B.Travel changes our views about the world.

C.Not all lives should be equally treated.

D.Travel helps us change nature as we like.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.How did I fall in love with insects?

    B.Welcome to the insects centre!

C.Search for fun in Costa Rica!

D.How did I start my travel?

  • 22、   Regarded as one of the English language’s most gifted poets, John Keats wrote poetry that concentrated on imagery, human nature, and philosophy (哲学). Although Keats didn’t receive much formal literary education, his own studies and passion brought him much success. Additionally, his own life situation influenced his poetry greatly.

Growing up as a young boy in London in a lower middle-class family, the young John didn’t attend a private school, but went to a public one. His teachers and his family’s friends regarded him as an optimistic boy who favored playing and fighting much more than minding his studies. After his father’s death in the early 1800s, followed by his mother’s passing due to tuberculosis (肺结核), he began viewing life differently. He wanted to escape the world and did so by reading anything he could get his hands on.

At around the age of 16, the teenage John Keats began studying under a surgeon so that he too might become a doctor. However, his literary appetite had taken too much of his fancy, especially with his addiction to the poetry of Ehmund Spenser. He was able to have his first full poem published in the Examiner in 1816, entitled O Solitude! If I Must With Thee Dwell. Within two months in 1817, Keats had written an entire volume of poetry, but was sharply criticized by a magazine. However, the negative response didn’t stop his love of rhythm .

John Keats’ next work was Endymion, which was published in May 1818. The story involves a shepherd who falls in love with the moon goddess and leads him on an adventure of one boy’s hope to overcome the limitations of being human. Following Endymion, however, he tried something more narrative-based (叙事体的) and wrote Isabella. During this time, John Keats began seeing his limitations in poetry due to his own limit in life experiences. He would have to have the “knowledge” associated with his poems. His next work was Hyperion that would attempt to combine all that he learned. However, a bout (发作) with tuberculosis while visiting Italy would keep him from his work and eventually take his life in 1821.

1Why did John Keats’ change attitude towards life ?

    A.Because his parents passed away.

B.Because he only received poor education.

C.Because Edmund Spenser’s poetry influenced him too much.

D.Because he received a lot of criticism from a magazine.

2While trying to achieve his dream of becoming a poet, John Keats was_____.

    A.experienced. B.impatient.

    C.knowledgeable. D.determined.

3What do we know from the passage?

A.Keats received little education at school.

B.Endymion was concerning a real love story.

C.In 1816 Keats spent two months writing a poem.

D.Keats once had a chance of becoming a doctor.

  • 24、College helps students dream of more than a salary

From the earliest days of our country, we have seen education as the foundation for democracy and citizenship. Yet high school students and families are increasingly questioning its value. Is investing in a college or university education still worth it? The answer is definitely “Yes”.

From a financial point of view, a college education surely pays off. Students who graduate from college can expect to make about 60% more than those who do not, well over a million dollars over a lifetime. Completing college makes an even greater difference to the earning power of young women. A 25-34 year-old female with a bachelor’s degree can expect to make 70% more than if she had only completed her high school diploma. But what about the benefits of college that are more difficult to measure?

College is a passport to different places, different times, and different ways of thinking — from learning new languages to considering the arc of human history to diving deep into the building blocks of matter. It gives students a chance to understand themselves differently, seeing how their lives are both like and unlike those who inhabited other eras and other lands.

College introduces students to people they’ve never met before? One of the most important ways in which students learn at college is by interacting with people who are different from themselves. I recall one student who was admitted to Harvard but wasn’t sure he would fit in at a school in the Northeast. However, one night he found himself debating the characteristics that define a genuine hero with other admitted students from around the world. Not everyone agreed, but the differences were what made the conversation exciting, and he realized how much he could learn at a place full of engaging people with a wide range of viewpoints.

College teaches students the virtue of slowing down?No one denies the value of speed, connectivity and the virtual world in an economy that thrives on all three. But “thinking” is a word that is too often forgotten. College teaches students to slow down, to change information into insight and knowing into understanding. It nurtures critical thinking. The result is that students grow in knowledge and in wisdom for a lifetime.

To conclude, investing in a college or university education is well worth it. College opens opportunities reflected in earning and employment statistics. But more importantly, in college students have acquired a new way of transforming the world, through the power of learning, analyzing, changing to adapt to what they have come to understand.

College helps students dream of more than a salary
