二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Car registration plates (车牌) are just a series of numbers and letters, right? Well, yes… but not for everyone.

Amazingly, number plates existed before cars. The city of Victoria in Canada gave horse-drawn carriages number plates as early as 1884. And France was the first country to introduce plates in 1893. Early number plates were different shapes and sizes, and made of lots of different materials. In fact, it was not until 1957 that car manufacturers and governments agreed on standardized plates, and even today there are three different sizes.

The first car registration number in the UK was A1. This was sold to Earl Russell by the London County Council in 1903. The letter “A” showed the number was from London, while the number “1” showed it was the first number issued. However, since then, the system has changed many times. At the moment, number plates in the UK consist of letters and numbers. Let’s look at the registration number plate “LK51 FTN”. First of all, “LK” shows which registration office has issued the registration number (in this case, it’s London Stanmore). The numbers 51 show the age of the car (51 means the car was licensed in the second half of 2001). And the last three letters are random.

Different EU countries use different arrangements of numbers and letters. For example, Spain uses four numbers and three letters, while Sweden uses three numbers and three letters, and Norway and Denmark use two letters and five digits. The system has changed many times because the letter-number combinations keep running out. UK number plates don’t have to include the European Union symbol although most EU countries use the symbol.

Some number plates have become extremely valuable, particularly those that spell out words. Basically, numbers on the plates can be used to represent words or parts of words. For example, “8” can mean “ate”; “4” can be “four” or “for”; and “2” can symbolize “to”, “two” or “too”. For example, “NVERLA8” means “Never late”.

Plates that represent words or phrases are commonly known as “vanity plates”. And they can be extremely expensive. Russian businessman Roman Abramovich is supposed to have paid over £250,000 for the plate “VIP 1”. Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has bought the plate “LEW 1S” and the most expensive number plate ever was “M1” which an anonymous buyer has acquired for £331,000.

So, what’s your number plate? It might be worth a fortune.

【1】What can we learn from the development of car plates?

A.Canada, France and UK have invented three different plate sizes.

B.In terms of giving car plates, Canada acted much earlier than France.

C.UK has always been consistent in its system for car registration numbers.

D.Car producers and governments cooperated to form standards for plates.

【2】Why have EU countries had to change their systems of arranging numbers and letters?

A.No such agreement has been reached among different EU countries.

B.Much confusion has arisen from different digits adopted by EU countries.

C.Old letter-number arrangements were not adequate for increasing needs.

D.The British design of number plates differs from that of most EU countries.

【3】“LEW 1S” has fetched a high priced mainly because __________.

A.it can be read out just the way of its master’s name

B.Lewis Hamilton believes that it can bring luck to him

C.the public consider it as a symbol of higher social classes

D.it has a long history and is different from current EU plates

  • 22、For the first time in more than 60 years, firearms and motor vehicles are killing Americans at an identical rate, according to new death data. The death rate for both firearms and motor vehicles stands at 10.3 deaths per 100,000 people. The result was produced primarily by a sharp drop in the rate of motor vehicle deaths since 1950, while over the same period, gun deaths rose.

The steady decline in motor vehicle deaths can be attributed to (归因于) a combination of improved technology and smarter regulation. The federal government commanded the presence of seat belts in the 1960s. The 1970s brought anti-lock brakes. The 1980s brought an increased focus on drunk driving and seat belt use. Airbags came along in the 1990s. More recent years have seen demands on electronic stability systems, increased penalties (惩罚) for careless driving and other improved technology used to meet safety requirements.

However, the history of American gun control regulation has been more erratic (不稳定的). Restrictions past in earlier times have been undone recently. Technological advances, like smart-gun technology that prevents people other than the owner from firing a gun, have been blocked by opposition from the National Rifle Association of America and many gun owners.

The result? The gun death rate is slightly higher than before. Particularly annoying is that there may be ways to improve gun safety and reduce firearm deaths. But innovations (创新) in gun safety are hard to come by, in large part because of Congress’s longstanding ban on many types of federal government research. The ban badly affects academic researchers. One well-known researcher, Garen Wintemute of the University of California at Davis, had to donate $1 million of his own money to keep his research going. He clearly tells his students not to join the field because of the severe difficulties that researchers face in obtaining funding and publishing their results.

Gun deaths and vehicle deaths are in many ways two different problems. Gun deaths are typically on purpose, but motor vehicle deaths are usually accidental. And cars are much more complicated machines than guns. Still, we’ve been able to make driving much safer. We could potentially do the same with guns.

【1】What does the new death data reveal?

A.Gun deaths once experienced a sharp drop in 1950.

B.About 10 out of 10,000 people died of gun accidents.

C.Motor vehicle deaths have slightly declined since 1950.

D.Guns are now killing as many people as cars in the U.S.

【2】How does the author develop the second paragraph?

    A.By stating facts.

    B.By using figures.

    C.By giving instructions.

    D.By making comparisons.

【3】What might Garen Wintemute be willing to do?

    A.Give up his gun research.

B.Donate $1 million to his university.

C.Support Congress’s ban on gun research.

D.Discourage students from following his research.

【4】What conclusion does the author draw in the last paragraph?

    A.Gun safety could be guaranteed.

B.Guns are as complicated as cars.

C.Car driving is much easier than before.

D.Car accidents tend to be caused deliberately.

  • 24、We’ve been celebrating moms for thousands of years. Yet, the origin (起源)of day that belongs to mom actually comes hundreds of years later.

Philadephia,1876, Social activist Ann Jarvis was wishing for someone to honor moms during a Sunday school lesson. Her daughter, Anna Mane, took note.

On May 8 1907, Ann passed away. Anna was sad, but determined to make her mother’s dream come true.

Anna organized the first official celebration of Mother’s Mother Day on May 10 1908. Hundreds attended, but Anna didn’t. Instead, she sent 500 white carnation (康乃馨)flowers to all guests, as well as a letter describing how important the day was. Six years passed and Anna continued her fight for a national holiday.

In 1914, the U. S. President signed a law officially recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. The first national Mother’s Day was held on May 10, 1914. And with that Anna realized her mother’s wishes. Mother's Day soon spread around the world.

But Big business saw the holiday as a chance for big returns. Anna intended for the day to be celebrated with mothers and families, while wearing white carnations. Soon, however, Mother's Day became combined with flowers, candy, cards and other gifts.

Anna spent her later years feeling angry at the corporate machine that had made money by taking advantage of her mother’s dream. She even tried to get the government to drop the holiday completely.

And by 1948, she was completely against Mother’s Day. She died later that year, aged 84. Anna never married, nor did she have any children. All she had was a dream and a wish from her mom.

That dream lives on, though she originally intended, and is still celebrated each year around the world. Commercialization(商业化) ruined the dream for Anna ,but we suppose the feeling behind Mother's Day lives on.
