二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   A breathtaking trick potentially left over from our ancestors might be found in us — the ability to sense oxygen through our skin.

Amphibians, animals such as frogs that can live both on land and in water, have long been known to be capable of breathing through their skin. In fact, the first known lungless frog that breathes only through its skin was discovered recently in the rivers of Borneo.

Now the same oxygen sensors found in frog skins and in the lungs of mammals (哺乳动物) have unexpectedly been discovered in the skin of mice.

“No one had ever looked,” explained Randall Johnson, a biologist researcher.

Mice and frogs are quite distant relatives, so the fact they have these molecules (分子) in common in their skin suggests they might well be found in the skin of other mammals, such as humans.

“We have no reason to think that they are not in the skin of people too,” Johnson said.

These molecules not only detect oxygen, but help increase levels of vital red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body. Normal mice breathing in air that is 10 percent oxygen-a dangerously low level similar to conditions at the top of Mount Everest, and about half that of air at sea level. However, mice that had the oxygen sensor HIF-1a genetically removed from their skin failed to produce this hormone (荷尔蒙) even after hours of such low oxygen.

These findings, if they hold true in humans, suggest one could raise the level of oxygen circulating inside the body. This could help treat lung diseases and disorders such as anemia (贫血症) without injecting drugs, which make up a multibillion-dollar market, Johnson said.

Athletes also often try to get more oxygen delivered to their muscles in order to improve their performance. They often do this by training at high altitudes or in low-oxygen tents. The new study suggests they might want to expose their skin as well as breathing in low-oxygen air to improve their performance. “It’s hard to say what exactly might be done, however — there’s a lot we don’t know yet,” Johnson explained.

The scientists detailed their findings in the April 18 issue of the journal Cell.

【1】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Johnson believes that Oxygen sensors also exist in human skin.

B.People have to surf the Internet to read detailed findings.

C.It has been proved that these findings help treat lung diseases.

D.It has long been expected oxygen sensors exist in mice’s skin.

【2】One of the functions of the molecules mentioned above is _______.

    A.carrying oxygen around the body

    B.improving athletes’ performance

    C.detecting oxygen

    D.increasing level of oxygen

【3】What is Johnson’s attitude to the application of the findings to the athletes’ training?

    A.Negative.

    B.Doubting.

    C.Positive.

    D.Hesitating.

【4】The best title of the passage may be _______.

A.Great Findings Benefits Athletes A Lot

B.Frogs And Mice Are Distant Relatives

C.First Known Animal Breathes Through Skin

D.Humans Might Sense Oxygen Through Skin

  • 22、We are doomed (注定遭殃): Robots will steal our jobs; Artificial intelligence (AI) will corrupt our free will; We are to be slaves to machines.

Economist Andy Haldane warns that large numbers of current labor will disappear as AI takes over. But no one predicts that AI might be good news.

Currently, there are 90,000 vacancies in social care and 24,000 in nursing. A labor shortage in British social services has risen from 7% six years ago to11% today. Education is suffering likewise.

The idea that AI, robots and 3D computer printing will make these booming industries unnecessary is silly. Clearly, new technology will mechanise (使机械化) a number of activities. As throughout history, innovation requires labor markets to change and people to retrain. The reality of economic history is that technology and trade make for short-term disruption (扰乱). But we survived and lived well as new needs and jobs appeared.

The latest phrase, the “fourth industrial revolution”, supposedly describes a new digital age. If there is to be a fourth revolution, it will be the complete opposite, a reversion(倒退) to the economy of human experience. The digital age will satisfy our life, freeing up leisure time for activities that are already in great demand. These cover everything from health, beauty, travel, food, the arts and entertainment to social work, the care of children and the elderly. These service industries essentially involve human relationships. They cannot be done by robots or machines. They are labor-intensive and they are costly, whether in the private or public sector. They are also booming. Leisure and travel is second in value only to financial services.

Economists interested in manufacturing statistics would do better to welcome AI as releasing workers into the experience economy. They should discuss how we are going to pay for them, especially those concentrated in the public sector. They should stop encouraging people into job protectionism.

【1】What is the first paragraph mainly about?

A.Worries that human beings are doomed.

B.Reasons why human beings are doomed

C.Warnings that human beings are doomed.

D.Doubts as to whether human beings are doomed.

【2】What will happen if new technologies become popular?

    A.It will replace humans completely.

B.People will be slaves to machines.

C.Workers will have to upgrade skills.

    D.Labor markets will remain unchanged.

【3】What's the author's attitude towards the digital age?

    A.Optimistic.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Critical.

    D.Worried.

【4】What does the author argue in the text?

    A.People are fascinated by robots.

B.Robots should be paid like humans.

C.Efforts must be made to protect workers.

D.It's silly to worry about robots stealing our jobs.

  • 23、Some people ran into me in the dining hall today — they were on their phone and didn’t see me. The dining hall was packed, as usual, so I couldn’t move out of the way in time. They ran into me, but I said sorry. They said nothing and kept walking.

It reminded me of the theory that women are more likely to step out of the way if the sidewalk is too narrow. My friend likes to test this theory out for herself — she walks straight on her path and sees if men will move out of her way. Many of them have run into her unless she moves at the last second. She realizes that she is always the one who apologizes when that happens. I say sorry for things like that all the time. It made me think: why am I apologizing for something that isn’t my fault?

From a young age, I was taught to apologize when I did something wrong. Over the years, there have been more and more sorrys in my life. I started apologizing even when I was in the right. I apologize to escape conflict. This pattern is especially prevalent in women. Women are socialized to be more passive. We aren’t expected to stand up for ourselves; we’re expected to keep our heads down and apologize.

Of course, I value a good apology. A genuine apology helps, but I think it’s only the first step in actually making amends. People can say sorry and not mean it. Or, some people give a sincere apology but never change their behavior. What’s the point of apologizing if you’re going to do the same thing again? Sorry is just a word — actions are what matter.

Apologizing can be tiring. Once you say sorry, you’re accepting responsibility. There’s no need to blame yourself for something that isn’t your fault. Conversely, it’s tiring to hear “sorry” and have that person do the same thing again. Deeds speak louder than words. So start making changes instead of saying unnecessary sorry.

【1】What happened to the author in the dining hall?

A.She was knocked down by the huge crowd.

B.She apologized to those who crashed into her.

C.She couldn’t find her way in the crowded place.

D.She was busy on her phone and didn’t notice others.

【2】Which is the reason for the author’s saying more sorrys in her life?

A.She is always taught to behave herself in the public area.

B.She feels guilty for the trouble caused by her carelessness.

C.She believes that women should apologize to show politeness.

D.She apologizes just to avoid unnecessary argument with others.

【3】What does the underlined word “prevalent” mean in the third paragraph?

    A.Widespread.

    B.Uncommon.

    C.Significant.

    D.Unnoticeable.

【4】What does the author suggest people do?

    A.Avoid saying sorry.

    B.Deny taking responsibility.

    C.Keep on blaming others.

    D.Set about making changes.

  • 24、Artificial intelligence (AI) still can’t see the future, but a new algorithm (算法) may come close: using nothing but written movie summaries, the AI can consistently tell which films will play well—or awfully—to critics and audiences. If the model can be further improved, it could one day help producers predict whether a movie will be a failure at the box office, before it’s even made.

To test several AI models, researchers used plot summaries of 42,306 movies from all over the world, many collected from Wikipedia. The models broke the summaries by sentence and used something called sentiment (情感) analysis to analyze each one. Sentences considered “positive”, such as “Thor loves his hammer”, would receive a rating closer to positive one. And sentences that were considered “negative”, like “Thor gets in a fight” would be rated closer to negative one.

Generally, successful movies such as 1951’s Alice in Wonderland—which scored 80% on the movie-rating website Rotten Tomatoes—have frequent waves in sentiment; unsuccessful ones, such as 2009’s The Limits of Control, vary less. It’s not important whether the films begin or end happily, the researchers say. What’s important is that the sentiments change frequently.

The sentiment ratings in each summary were then simplified into a single score to reflect how often the sentiment changed. The researchers tested three different methods of arriving at a final score. All three could predict fairly accurately whether a movie would be unpopular, and one method worked especially well for guessing which thrillers and comedies reviewers would hate.

The methods were not as efficient at guessing which movies would succeed, but they still predicted the results more accurately than random chance. In the future, the researchers say their methods could be bettered to predict the amount a movie could earn at the box office and help producers decide which movies to invest in. The system’s fair judgment might give an advantage to less well-known writers the researchers add. It could also potentially save the public from having to sit through films like Jaws: The Revenge, which online critics and audience alike rate as terrible.

【1】How can AI help foresee the future of movies?

    A.By testing plot models.

    B.By using sentiment analysis.

    C.By writing summaries.

    D.By consulting critics and audiences.

【2】What is the key to a successful movie according to the researchers?

    A.A happy ending.

    B.Famous movie stars.

    C.A well-known producer.

    D.Frequent sentiment changes.

【3】What benefit will the methods possibly bring?

    A.Increasing box office earnings.

    B.Assessing a movie’s quality accurately.

    C.Providing written summaries for critics.

    D.Helping producers make sensible decisions.

【4】What’s the researchers’ attitude to the model?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Cautious.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Unclear.
