二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、As an adult, I like nothing better than to sit on the beach reading. Give me a satisfying “beach read” and I’m happy for days. However, I’m sad to say it isn’t really a thing for kids. Most kids would rather take their boards out beyond their parents’ comfort zone than read. And who can blame them?

But the truth is that even when kids are on vacation, they need the same sort of relax, and reading time that we adults look forward to. The trick is getting them to sit for 5 or 10 minutes to refresh their bodies and to enjoy the pleasure of reading.

Books tend to be kind of heavy and they can get wet or filled with sand and are then pretty much ruined. Book chapters tend to be kind of long. Your child may refuse to read. And if your kids are anything like my daughter, they may hate to close a book in the middle of the chapter.

You know what I’m going to say, right? Magazines won’t weigh you down. They can be thrown away if they get wet, and will provide just the right amount of reading for the times when my daughter is ready to sit under the umbrella and cool down for a few minutes. Literary magazines will allow your child to read wonderful fiction paired with beautiful illustrations(插图). Discovery magazines deliver articles on all sorts of topics that will excite and interest your nonfiction lover.

So don’t leave the beach read behind when you pack the beach bags. Slip a magazine or two in the pocket of the bag and when your child needs a few minutes of downtime(休息), pull it out and get them to sit for 10 minutes or so.

1Who is the text most likely intended for?

    A. Parents.   B. Kids.   C. Travelers.   D. Teachers.

2What does the author really want to say in Paragraph 3?

    A. Books become a burden for kids on holiday.

    B. Books are not the best choice for “beach read”.

    C. Kids don’t spend time reading books on holiday.

    D. It’s a pity to throw away the books ruined on holiday.

3What can we infer about the author’s daughter from the text?

    A. She reads thick books during her holiday.

    B. She prefers to read some literary magazines.

    C. She takes some magazines with her on holiday.

    D. She doesn’t want her magazines to weigh her down.

4What may be the best title for the text?

    A. Enjoying Magazines on the Beach

    B. Making “Beach Read” a Thing for Kids

    C. Making Good Use of Kids’ Time on the Beach

    D. Packing Your Beach Bags with Literary Magazines

  • 27、In the past months, humans have become quite familiar with the term “social distancing”. But it turns out that we are not the only ones to avoid contacting our peers when our health may be at risk: Research suggests honeybees do it, too. “It’s exciting to see that other animals are doing something analogous”, said Dr. Alessandro Cini, co-author of the research at University College London.

Scientists have found that when a hive( 蜂箱)of honeybees is under threat from the mite (螨虫)called Varroa destructor, which can cause the collapse of honeybee colonies, the bees will respond by changing the way they interact with one another.

By examining videos recorded inside the hives, the researchers found that when hives had mites, foraging(觅食的)bees performed important dances to indicate the direction of food sources and kept themselves away from the centre of the colony where young bees and the queen stayed. This may help to keep the infection at a level that can be controlled, limiting the amount of damage. “Foragers are one of the main entrance routes for the mites,“ said Cini.

The team then carried out experiments in the laboratory, artificially infecting small groups of about 12 young bees with the mites and comparing them to uninfected groups. This time the team found no increase in social distancing among infected groups-which, says Cini, may reflect that it is more important for foragers and young bees to keep their distance when the mites are present and that bees rely on one another.

“Probably social distancing is too costly on a small scale,” he said. But there were differences in grooming(梳理)behaviour: Infected bees were groomed more, inspected more, and had food shared with them more than individuals in uninfected groups.

Cini said the study showed the power of natural selection in the evolution of social behavior and also dynamic change in the social behaviour to adapt to an ever-changing environment.

  • 28、Being an early bird, or the opposite night owl (夜猫子), is usually not something that is thought of as being highly under our control. Some people seem to sleep early while others get a second wind and tend to sleep late. This internal clock is a person’s unique internal timekeeper and the body’s own master controller of many functions. Most obvious is our sleep patterns; however, it also plays a role in our eating patterns, hormone levels, and maybe even our mood.

A recent study looked at whether the body clock is related to levels of physical activity. Using a watch-like device that measures movement, over 5,000 participants’ activity levels were collected for two weeks. After considering some factors that may explain differences, such as education or background health conditions, they found that night owls, as compared to morning types, had up to 60 to 90 fewer minutes per day of activity.

For those with a more of an “eveningness” type, jobs or other demands on time may mean that a morning alarm is sounding well before their natural wake time. As a result, a night owl type may be starting the day relatively “jet lagged” (有时差感的) —feeling out of step with their body due to being awake when the body would prefer to be asleep.

We should emphasize that this study does not tell us that being a night owl is the cause of lower physical activity. It only shows a connection between being an early bird or night owl and certain conditions. In this study, we only considered two factors —sleep patterns and activity. Using your eat-sleep cycle to your advantage as much as possible to be active is probably the best advice. Are you someone who feels ready and clear first thing in the morning? That may be the best time to get those steps in. More energy in the evening? Then scheduling that walk for after dinner may be best.

【1】What do we know about the internal clock?

A.It motivates people to sleep early.

B.It keeps a person careful about time.

C.It affects multiple functions of the body.

D.It masters the patterns of mood and eating.

【2】What was the result of the recent study?

A.An early bird received higher education.

B.A night owl had lower physical movement.

C.An early bird had more reasonable activity levels.

D.A night owl had better background health conditions.

【3】Which of the following best describes the feeling of night owls with a “jet lag”?

    A.Uneasy.

    B.Natural.

    C.Energetic.

    D.Embarrassed.

【4】What is the author’s suggestion for more activity?

    A.Do exercise after dinner.

    B.Adjust our sleep patterns.

    C.Make a schedule in advance.

D.Make the most of our body clock.

  • 29、Imagine you found a wallet containing a stranger's contact details but no cash. Would you return it to its owner? Now imagine the same wallet contained a few banknotes. Would that change your response? Does it depend on the amount of money? And how do you think other people would react?

Honesty makes the world go round. Without people trusting in one another, society would fall apart. Honesty is therefore studied academically. Most work,in the area though, takes place under controlled conditions in labs, often featuring( 以..为特点) well-off and well-educated Westerners as its subjects. By contrast Alain Cohn of the University of Michigan and his colleagues have taken such behavioral economics around the world, covering 40 countries, 355 cities and more than 17,000 people.

As the team report this week in Science, Dr Cohn's research assistants entered public buildings. They handed in a wallet to the receptionist, saying they had found it on the street outside. Each wallet contains contact details. Importantly, some wallets also included $13.45, while others not. Then, the team simply waited to see who would return the wallet.

In 38 of the 40 countries, the wallets with money were returned more often than those without (51% Vs 40%). In addition, wallets containing a larger sum of money ($94.15) were even more likely (by about another 10%) to be returned than those with less.

With greater temptation(诱惑), then, comes greater honesty-- at least when it comes to lost wallets. Interestingly, though, such honesty is not reflected in people's expectations of others. When surveyed, most of 299 volunteers predicted that the more money in a wallet, the less likely it would be returned.

A certain doubt about the motives of, others is probably good for survival. But the warm inner thought of “doing the right thing"” is also a powerful motivation. How this altruism developed is much debated—particularly when it extends, as in Dr Cohn's experiments, to strangers whom the altruist has no expectation of ever meeting. Be that as it may, as this study shows, such altruism is real and universal.

【1】How is Alain Cohn's research different from the previous?

A.It was carried out in controlled situations.

B.More scientists participated in the research.

C.It covered varied subjects and backgrounds.

D.It took no account of well-educated Westerners.

【2】What can we learn from the research?

A.Rate of honesty varies among countries.

B.People prefer returning wallets without money.

C.The less money in a wallet, the higher rate of returning.

D.Wallets with more money are more likely to be given back.

【3】What does the underlined word“altruism”in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Doubt of others' motivations.

    B.Understanding of people's doubt.

    C.The motivation for survival.

    D.Concern for others' needs.

【4】What's the best title for the text?

    A.Money answers all things.

B.Honesty questioned in face of money.

C.Money doesn't make the world go round.

D.To be or not to be, that's the question.
