26、Recently, the artificial intelligence app ChatGPT has been making headlines in the higher education media and beyond. Some have taken an alarmist approach, such as a recent Atlantic piece titled “The College Essay Is Dead.” Others have been more optimistic, examining the limitations of the app as well as offering suggestions for how it can inform student learning and writing. Below is an FAQ about ChatGPT.
Q: How can I design assignments to discourage use of ChatGPT?
A: One important strategy for preventing use of ChatGPT or other similar technologies is to create assignments that require students to show stages of their work (outlines, rough drafts, etc.).
Ask students to refer to course materials and discussions, which would be impossible for ChatGPT to access and would also promote valuable integration skills.
Ask students to engage in and submit a reflection about what they have learned from completing the assignment. Sample tips include: a) Discuss the most challenging and most rewarding aspects of your project. b) What was the most surprising thing you learned in the course of this project? c) If you had the chance to do it again, what one thing would you have done differently on this project?
Teach citation skills and research skills, including expression of original thought.
It is worth considering why you assign writing in your classes and discussing that clearly with students. For most professors, writing represents a form of thinking. But for some students, writing is simply a product, a collection of words repeated back to the teacher. According to John Warner, a blogger and author of two books on writing, “If you can create an atmosphere where students are invested in learning, they are not going to copy, and they are not going to dodge the work. But the work has to be worth doing on some level, beyond getting the grade.”
Q: How can I use ChatGPT in the writing process?
A: These types of apps are not going away and will no doubt rise sharply in the future, so encouraging students to use them productively could be seen as an important contribution to information competence.

27、Inflammation(炎症)is me body’s defense mechanism. You might have experienced it if you sustained physical injuries like a sprained (扭伤的) ankle or had an infection, like the flu, which causes a sore throat. Inflammation can occur in any organ, but it is most common and easy to see in the skin. You will notice redness, heat and swelling.
Usually this is a good thing, as it shows you have a healthy immune system that can kill pathogens (病原体) organisms that can cause diseases and repair damage to the skin. However, inflammation can be a double-edged sword as in some people it can target the body’s healthy cells, causing what is called an autoimmune disease. Long-term, this can lead to conditions like arthritis (关节炎) and asthma.
Given this danger, a new study from Cambridge University, UK, has been looking into brain conditions that are not usually linked to autoimmune diseases. The study found that inflammation of the brain-known as neuroinflammation (神经炎症) has been linked to several forms of dementia (痴呆).
In this new study, published in the journal Brain, researchers scanned the brains of 31 volunteers with three different types of dementia. The first scan was to highlight neuroinflammation, and a second scan illuminated toxic (有毒的) proteins that are linked with conditions that negatively impact the brain. The team also examined 12 post-mortem (after death) brains.
These experiments showed similar patterns of toxic protein build-up and neuroinflammation, suggesting a relationship between inflammation and dementia.
“Even we were surprised by how tightly these two problems mapped on to each Other. Now, the big question is what role this neuroinflammation plays in the decline of the mind associated with dementia,” said Thomas Cope, one of the authors of the study.
After establishing the relationship between inflammation and dementia, the study now aims to find out if inflammation does its own damage, or if it is just a consequence of the build-up of toxic proteins in the brain.
Another of the study’s researchers, James Rowe, highlighted the importance of further research. He said the frequent presence of inflammation in Neurodegenerative (神经退化的) diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson’s disease, “offers hope that immune-based treatments might help slow or prevent these conditions”.
【1】Why is inflammation usually a good thing?
A.It can defend our body against asthma.
B.It gives long-term protection to healthy cells.
C.It is a refection of a healthy immune system.
D.It allows injuries to heal themselves.
【2】What did the study from Cambridge University find?
A.Neuroinflammation does its own damage to the brain.
B.There are links between neuroinflammation and dementia.
C.Increased toxic proteins in the brain cause dementia.
D.Toxic protein build-up and neuroinflammation have different patterns.
【3】What is still unknown according to Thomas Cope?
A.How neuroinflammation is connected with dementia.
B.How the decline of the mind is associated with dementia.
C.To what extent inflammation and dementia are linked with each other.
D.How to prevent neuroinflammation from developing into dementia.
【4】What can be inferred from James Rowe’s words?
A.Inflammation is one of the causes of neurodegenerative diseases.
B.Immune-based treatments would be the best cure for dementia.
C.Research on neuroinflammation could help treat neurodegenerative diseases.
D.Further research will focus on methods of cutting toxic proteins in the brain.

29、As technology develops, school students who are off class may have no fear of too much absence from class. A small robot may help those children recovering from a long-term illnesses in the hospital or at home. These children may feel isolated from their friends and classmates. The robot takes their place at school. Through the robot, the children can hear their teachers and friends. They also can take part in class from wherever they are recovering.

Now these children may have a high-tech friend to feel less alone. And that friend is a robot. The robot is called AV1. AV1 goes to school for a child who is at home while recovering from a long-term illness. And the child’s school friends must help. They carry the robot between classes and place the robot on the child’s desk.
A Norwegian company called No isolation created the robot. The co-founders of No Isolation are Karen Dolva and Marius Aabel. Dolva explains how the robot AV1 works. She says, from home, the child uses a tablet or phone to start the robot. Then they use the same device(设备)to control the robot’s movements. At school, the robot becomes the eyes, ears and voice of the child. The child can take part in classroom activities from wherever she/he is recovering-whether at home or from a hospital bed.
