26、Having grown up in northern Arizona with the immortal Grand Canyon and the iron red plateaus of Sedona in my backyard, I believed that the southwestern state is home to the most beautiful landscapes on the planet. Towering mountain titans, a cozy valley and an infinite blue sky promised fantastic potential for exploration. For me, no newly discovered sights or foreign landscapes can compare with its beauty.
That is, until I was invited to explore Guizhou province by the China Storyteller Partnerships Tour. Had someone vividly described how beautiful Guizhou can be in poetic detail, they would not have done it exactly. There is no substitute for seeing with one’s own eyes. I will attempt to do so.
During my trip around the city of Xingyi, in Guizhou, I saw the artwork of the Bouyei ethnic group. They use dyes produced from local plants to make clothing of striking blues and greens. Local elders still practice weaving with artful wooden machines and pass that tradition on to their grandchildren.
My father used to drag my brothers and me on yearly fishing trips around Arizona. We would compete to catch the largest fish, and in the mornings, Dad would cook us a basic breakfast of bacon, eggs, and toast. I sat in a small boat in the middle of the lake, with fishing pole moving slowly in my impatient hands, and held my bored tongue while my father attempted to share with me the whispers of the wind, a fish dancing on the surface of the lake or the majesty of a hawk hunting for prey overhead. On my trip to Guizhou I had the opportunity to paddle on Wanfeng lake. At one point I rested, floating at the center of the lake, listening to the spaces between silence and taking in the surrounding karst (喀斯特) mountains. I thought about my childhood, and wished I had listened more closely to my father while fishing.
I’ve lived away from Arizona for 10 long years, carving my own destiny in China. I’ve managed to build myself a family, a career, a livelihood, and various projects. I feel as though I have everything that I need. For a moment, in Guizhou, I felt home.

27、Imagine what you could do with a machine that could make things disappear.
For inspiration, you could read some books. In the books of J.R.R. Tolkein, Bilbo Baggins finds a ring that can make him disappear. Of course, there’s also poor Harry Potter, who used his invisibility cloak (隐形斗篷) to hide from danger.
Now that you’ve got some ideas, it’s time for the hard part: building the cloak. To do that, you have to give up science fiction and turn to real science. An invisibility cloak has to cheat anything or anyone who might be watching. In order to understand how something can be seen, it’s important to understand how we see.
Human beings can only see objects that reflect (反射) light waves. These waves enter the eye and are then processed by the brain. However, if an object doesn’t reflect light, then the waves don’t enter the eye, and the brain doesn’t process. So building an invisibility cloak is building something that doesn’t reflect light.
Cummer was part of a team of scientists from Duke University, including David Smith and David Schurig, who built the world’s first version (版本) of an invisibility cloak. They had been inspired by the work of a British physicist, John Pendry. He in May said that an invisibility cloak was possible and Pendry was not the only one thinking about a disappearing act. At the same time, a Scottish physicist, UIf Leonhardt published a paper on building invisibility equipment.
“It wasn’t easy,” says Cummer. “As often happens in science and research, it didn’t work very well the first time. That first cloak didn’t work like Harry Potter’s --- the scientists didn’t actually see anything disappear. So the research is still under way. ”

28、Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not bring so much material home in the first place.
The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.
Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.
But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
【1】What does the underlined word “over-consumption” refer to?

A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food.
【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable waste.
D.The author is proud of his consumer culture.
29、 Sporting activities are important improved forms of hunting behavior. Viewed biologically, the modern footballer is in reality a member of a hunting group. His killing weapon has turned into a harmless football and his hunted animals into a goal-mouth. If his aim is accurate and he scores a goal, he enjoys the hunter’s victory of killing his preys (猎物).
To understand how this transformation has taken place we must look back at our forefathers (先父). They spent over a million years evolving (进化) as cooperative hunters. Their very survival depended on success in the hunting-field. Under this pressure their whole way of life, even their bodies, became greatly changed. They became chasers, runners, jumpers, aimers, throwers and prey-killers. They cooperated as skillful male-group attackers.
Then about ten thousand years ago, after this extremely long period of hunting their food, they became farmers. Their improved intelligence, so significant to their old hunting life, was put to a new use—that of controlling and domesticating (驯化) their prey. The hunt became suddenly out of date. The food was there on the farms, awaiting their needs. The risks and uncertainties of the hunt were no longer necessary for survival.
The skills and thirst for hunting remained, however, and demanded new ways to practice them. Hunting for sport replaced hunting for necessity. This new activity involved all the original hunting orders but the aim of the operation was no longer to avoid starvation. Instead the sportsmen set off to test their skill against preys that were no longer important to their survival. To be sure, the kill may have been eaten but there were other simpler ways of getting a meaty meal.
【1】The author uses the example of the football game to tell us _______________.
A.sporting activities are forms of biological developments
B.the difference between sports and hunting
C.the reason why man used to go in for hunting
D.sporting activities have actually evolved from hunting
【2】The word “operation” in the last paragraph refers to _______________.
A.sporting activities B.domesticating wild animals
C.growing crops D.chasing and killing wild animals
【3】What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Sporting activities satisfy the desire of modern men to practice hunting skills which the forefathers developed for survival.
B.It is farming that brings human into close contact with nature.
C.Sporting activities are important to human existence because they excuse humans from risks and uncertainties.
D.It is farming that makes hunting completely out of date and unnecessary.

A five-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick, and that they had no money left. Only a very costly operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money.
When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation (绝望), “Only a miracle (奇迹) can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.
Holding the valuable piggy bank tightly, she came to the local drugstore. She took all the coins from her bank and placed them on the glass counter.
“And what do you want?” asked the pharmacist (药剂师). “It’s for my little brother,” the girl answered back. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”
“His name is Ming Ming and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell miracles here, child. I’m sorry,” the pharmacist said, smiling sadly at the little girl.
“I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”
In the shop, a well-dressed customer asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” That well-dressed man was Dr Zhao, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery.
“I don’t know,” she replied with tears in her eyes. “He’s really sick and my daddy can’t pay for an operation, so I have brought my savings.”
“How much do you have?” asked the man. “One yuan, but I can try and get some more,” she answered bitterly.
“Well, what a coincidence (巧合),” smiled the man, “One yuan —— the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.”
