二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Christa Barfield of Germantown starts each day by drinking a cup of hot tea. When she lifts the cup to her lips, she smells the tea gently and looks forward to the day ahead. "Drinking a cup of tea is a form of self-reflection," Barfield said." When I'm doing my praying or meditation(冥想), drinking tea allows me to sit in the moment and be present."

Barfield, 32, fell in love with tea in 2018 after taking a trip to the Caribbean Island of Martinique where every morning with her breakfast she was served a hot cup from the couple she visited. There, the host would take live herbs from his garden, put them in a cup, and pour hot water over them. "It was very different from what we do in America," Barfield said. "The tea had a fresher taste."

When she returned to Germantown, she was inspired to start a tea company of her own. In August, she started Viva Leaf Tea, a company that sells blended(调配的)teas from herbs and plants that Barfield grows from seed. The name of the company, Viva Leaf Tea, is a nod to the fresh herbal teas she drank in Martinique.

"I started a tea company for wellness reasons." Barfield explained, "It helped me to keep my 10 years of healthcare experiences and reuse them in my own way," Before starting Viva Leaf Tea. Barfield worked in healthcare management at several private practices in Philadelphia. In 2018, she earned a bachelor's degree in healthcare administration from Saint Joseph's University.

"We take all of our herbs very seriously," she said. "There are thousands of tea companies all over the world. But you don't really know where the tea leaves come from." Barfield provides a "farm to cup" experience for her customers. With every order, customers are provided with information about the origins of the herbs used and their possible health benefits.

1What did Barfield find from her trip to Martinique?

  • 22、It is widely known that any English conversation begins with the weather. Such a fixation with the weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson’s famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, people fail to come up with a good explanation for this English weather-speak.

Bill Bryson, for example, says that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the interest in it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.

Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena (现象). “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him, the weather in England is very changeable and uncertain and it draws the English as well as the outsider.

Bryson and Paxman stand for common misunderstandings about the weather-speak among the English. Both of them, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather-speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overcome the natural reserve and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather-speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are greetings. In other words, English weather-speak is a means of social bonding.

【1】Why does the author mention Dr. Johnson’s comment?

    A.Because Dr. Johnson is famous.

B.To show that most people agree with Dr. Johnson.

C.Because the comment was accurate two hundred years ago.

D.To show that English conversations usually start with the weather.

【2】According to the passage, what does Jeremy Paxman believe?

A.Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weather.

B.There is nothing special about the English weather.

C.The English weather attracts people to the British Isles.

D.English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty.

【3】What does the underlined word “draw” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?

    A.To explore.

    B.To attract.

    C.To ensure.

    D.To digitise.

【4】What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?

A.To analyse the weather in the UK.

B.To explain what English weather-speak is about.

C.To argue with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.

D.To tell people that the English weather is changeable.

  • 23、Unsolved Mysteries About the Planet Earth

Mystery 1: Where did all the water come from?

Water covers 70 percent of Earth’s surface and earns it the nickname “the blue planet”. And where did it come from? The most popular scientific theory states that the water came from several violent asteroids (小行星) filled with ice. Another suggests that the water actually has been around since Earth’s formation. However it happened, though, it’s certainly worked out well for Earth’s life forms.

Mystery 2 :What about all the oxygen?

Another thing is the planet’s oxygen. Tiny creatures released oxygen as a waste product, filling the atmosphere with it. After that, the level of oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere went wildly up and down until it finally calmed down around 540 million years ago. Since then, it’s remained at about the breathable level we experience today. But what caused it to be suddenly steady?

Mystery 3: What caused the Cambrian (寒武纪) Explosion?

The Cambrian Explosion refers to the explosion of complex life forms that occurred on Earth about 540 million years ago. Before then, life had consisted mostly of bacteria. But at the beginning of the Cambrian period, complex creatures began developing at a rate never seen before. Suddenly, life forms had brains, eyes, and bones. Most living creatures today can trace their blood back to the Cambrian period.

Mystery 4: Will we ever be able to predict earthquakes?

We still haven’t been able to come up with a way to accurately predict earthquakes. We can certainly try, but our current technology cannot predict them exactly. We know that earthquakes start when rocks crack underground and send earthquake waves toward the surface, but we haven’t figured out why that happens, or how to predict it.

1Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.Earth is called the blue star because of water coverage.

B.The level of oxygen has been steady all the time.

C.Complex creatures had rapid development after the Cambrian period.

D.We know nothing about predicting earthquakes.

2Which of the following is true about Mystery 4?

A.It is the oldest mystery of the four.

B.It will be solved in the near future.

C.It is the most difficult mystery to solve.

D.It is a matter that is of practical significance.

3Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary. B.A geography book.

    C.A novel. D.A magazine.

  • 24、Cities are noisy, dirty, and full of traffic jams. But they don’t have to be that way. In a “smart” city, electronic sensors collect data on everything from traffic patterns and electricity usage to noise and light levels. Computer programs continuously analyze this data to find patterns and report important information. If you lived in a place like this, you’d be able to find out what’s happening at any location, right now. You might want to know how many people are at the local park, or how windy it is at the beach, or whether you’ll run into any construction projects as you bike to school. A smart city could deliver instant answers via an app on your mobile device.

Singapore, a city in Southeast Asia, already uses sensor systems. All 11,000 taxis in the city regularly report their speed, location, and direction through their GPS systems. Cameras throughout the city take pictures of traffic conditions. Website and apps share information about what’s happening on the city's roads, right now.

In New York City, some trashcans have sensors that send out an alert when they need to be emptied. These sensors also collect weather information. The city of Chicago plans to install dozens of sensors in 2016. The project, called “Array of Things,” will capture data on the current levels of light, noise, rain, heat, and wind around the city.

Originally, project organizers planned to check for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals coming from cell phones. But this plan made many citizens uncomfortable. Some worried that the sensors would dig into personal data on their phones or even identify individuals as they walked past. Organizers said they would not identify or track anyone, but they still changed the plan. Sensors will now analyze images from a camera in order to count people. Images will be deleted after the count is complete.

What do you think? Life in a smart city sounds convenient. But some of the data the city tracks may be about you. How much information are you willing to share?

【1】Which is NOT the main feature in a “smart” city?

    A.Electronic sensors.

    B.Computer programs.

    C.Mobile apps.

    D.Construction projects.

【2】In what field does the sensor systems work in Singapore?

    A.Environment.

    B.Weather.

    C.Transport.

    D.Photography.

【3】Why did the original project organizers change their plan?

    A.The signals made them uncomfortable.

    B.Citizens worried about their privacy.

    C.Sensors couldn’t analyze some images.

    D.Organizers always tracked the citizens.

【4】In which section of magazine can we find this text?

    A.Entertainment.

    B.Nature.

    C.Society.

    D.Technology.

It was the late 1930s, and things were tough. Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster, BC. My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.

Looking back, I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would tuck(塞进)a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because our soles(鞋底)were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have “French toast” ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those times. Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be evicted(驱逐)right after Christmas on the first of January.

Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn’t have any fond hidden away. When he didn’t find any, he issued the cheque to Mum. Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring us all of a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.

Unknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas tree, shoveling snow, and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. Boots that weren’t patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.

Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve. I was excited, as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then that I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations, nor any money for Christmas goodies. I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.

    Paragraph 1:

As I continued walking, I began to reconsider my plan.

With great excitement and tears in my eyes, I knocked on the door.
