  • 21、Almost everyone has a question or two about living in space. What is life really like in space? And what do astronauts do there?

Astronauts living in space have the same hygiene needs as people do on Earth. When they wake up, they wash their hair, brush their teeth and go to the bathroom as well. However, because of microgravity (微重力), astronauts take care of themselves in different ways. For example, they use a kind of special matter to wash their hair and leg restraints (腿部個定装置) to position themselves when they use the toilet.

Astronauts eat three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Some food can be eaten in the natural form such as fruit. Other foods require adding water such as noodles. There are no fridges in space, so space food must be stored and prepared properly to avoid going bad.

Besides morning routine and eating in space, astronauts perform many tasks including checking the machines, updating computer equipment, etc. At the same time, the control center on Earth sends messages to the astronauts through voice or email with new instructions to assist them in their daily routines.

What’s more, living in space is not just all work and no play. A popular way of relaxation is looking out of the window. And they can also enjoy themselves by watching movies, reading books, playing cards and talking to their families during their free time.

  • 22、The lines to enter South Gate’s South East High School and South East Middle School at 9 a.m. Monday were each about 200 students deep.

Kony Aguillon sat in the shade while her son, an eighth-grader, waited for his health check in. She had done everything right Sunday night, pre-checking the district’s Daily Pass website so that it would be smooth going the next morning. But on Monday, the system wouldn’t load. They arrived at school early, around 7:50 a.m., to check in, and an hour later, there they stood. “I imagined it was going to be crazy,” she added, but not as bad as it was.

Opening day at the nation’s second-largest school district unfolded with a mix of emotions: frustration over long waits, anxiety over health protocols and concern for how things would go for children who have been learning online for a year and a half. But for many, the sense of joy and relief at being together again eased the worries.

In the early morning at John Marshall High, lines of students waiting to enter extended two blocks. By 9 a.m., some students were still waiting, having missed part of the first class.

In anticipation of delays, Gary Garcia had already extended the first period of classes by about 18 minutes in hopes that all students could meet their teachers.

Teachers and parents also expressed optimism.

“It’s exciting,” said Nohemi Sanchez-Heredia, who teaches first grade. Henriette Jeter was at the school with her daughters, who are starting kindergarten, second and fifth grades. Even though the Delta variant (德尔塔变异株) worries her, she felt her kids needed to be back in a classroom.

The most common emotions were in the largest type: “nervous” and “excited” mixed with somewhat “stressed”, “happy”, “tired” and “scared”.

【1】Which of the following can generally best describe emotions outside the school gates?

    A.Relaxed.

    B.Disordered.

    C.Scared.

    D.Excited.

【2】What fact caused the check-in slow besides a bit too many students?

    A.No preparation.

    B.Too many parents.

    C.Poor loading system.

    D.Extension of the first period.

【3】What’s the meaning of underlined word “protocols” in paragraph 3?

    A.Benefits.

    B.Test reports.

    C.Problems.

    D.Physical strengths.

    【4】Who might be a schoolmaster?

    A.Gary Garcia.

    C.Kony Aguillon.

    D.Nohemi Sanchez-Heredia.

For the last 27 years, the Bowersox family has spent their holidays with Santa. It was not the one from the North Pole but a wooden cutout(雕刻)of him purchased by Jeff and Jeanne Bowersox at a holiday sale when they first moved to New Castle, Delaware. The couple adored it.

“Since 1993, Santa has been in our yard,” Jeanne said, “and our grandkids just loved to come and see Santa.”

With two red, golf ball-sized dots for his cheeks and a red nose, he is the happiest Santa around. For years, the cutout brought joy to their entire neighborhood. But no one enjoyed it more than the Bowersox family, especially in times of sadness.

“He’s always the first decoration that’s put out.” Jeanne said, “And my husband had the idea to put our address on the back of it.”

When the family lost Jeff for cancer in 2014, the handwriting on the back of Santa became one of many memorable things tied to the family patriarch(族长). Every year, the Bowersox family placed the Santa out by the giant tree in front of their home just like their father did.

Since his father’s death, their son Ken took over decorating duties. This year was no different. Ken put all the decorations out in front of the house on Thanksgiving Day. But the family got a heartbreaking surprise the next morning. In the middle of the night, someone had stolen Santa.

Christmas was one of Jeff’s favorite times of the year. He would often get down on the floor with Jeanne to help with hand-made gifts. Their daughter Gray remembered how her father used to dress up as Santa when the grandkids were young. The face of holiday cheer was always present. Once the grandchildren got old enough to recognize that it was grandpa under the mask,a neighbor took over the Santa duties. But the spirit of Christmas was still strong within Jeff.

“I do truly miss Jeff.” Jeanne said, “We had a very great marriage.”

Para. 1:Gray didn’t want her mom to stay sad with the loss of their beloved Santa decoration,so she thought of an idea.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Para. 2:The family referred to the whole incident as a Christmas wonder.
