21、When Armida Armato’s daughter, Alexia, came home from school one day last year keen to go on a school trip to Ecuador, she wasn’t too sure how to feel. She was happy that her daughter could experience something she never did as a teen but was fearful of letting her travel to such a remote part of the world.
Alexia was 16 at the time, a student at Westwood High School. The school sponsored a humanitarian trip for 26 students and two teachers to spend 18 days living in a mountain village to build a one-room school. Even though Armato trusted her daughter, the other students and the teachers, she was worried about the side effects from the travel vaccines, possible accidents, and medical care.
Now that Alexia was home, Armato said she saw her daughter’s new maturity, greater confidence and independence. “This is the best thing I ever did,” Alexia said. “The experience was so eye-opening and life-changing. You’re with people who are not as lucky as you are. They live in very poor conditions but they’re so happy and outgoing. You say, ‘My God. I’m taking everything for granted back home.’”
She said they built a one-room school from scratch with no mechanical cement mixers. They used their hands, shovels and basic tools. She and another student lived with a local family in a small village about eight hours outside the capital, Quito. Despite the initial strangeness and knowing only basic Spanish, she said they grew very close and felt like a family.
Every year, groups of students at Montreal High School like Alexia pack their bags and fly off with classmates and teachers to developing countries where they volunteer for a variety of projects.
“Armato’s worries are very common among parents,” says Bill Nevin, a teacher at St. George’s High School. He organizes a humanitarian rip to India to the Sheela Bal Bhavan orphanage and says the three biggest fears families have are health, security and contact.

Testing Positive for COVID-19
Dear Members of the Harvard Community,
Earlier today, Adele and I learned that we tested positive for COVID-19. We started experiencing symptoms (症状) on Sunday — first coughs then fevers, chills, and muscle aches — and went to see our doctors on Monday. We were tested yesterday and just received the results a few minutes ago. We wanted to share this news with all of you as soon as possible.
Neither of us knows how we contracted ( 感 染 ) the virus, but it is good news that we met fewer people recently.
We began working from home and completely limiting our contact (接触) with others on March 14, taking social distancing measures. The Department of Public Health will be in touch with anyone with whom we have had close contact over the past fourteen days.
We will be taking the time we need to rest during a two-week isolation ( 隔 离 ) at home. I am happy that we have a great team, and many of my colleagues will be taking on more responsibility over the next few weeks to teach students online when Adele and I focus on just getting healthy. Thanks, in advance, for your good wishes.
This virus can lay anyone low. We all need to be alarmed and keep following guidelines to limit our contact with others. Your quick actions over the past few weeks — to respond to the needs of our community, to finish our teaching, and to do research that will save lives — have moved me deeply and made me very grateful and proud. I hope to see as few of you in our situation as possible, and I urge you to continue following the guidance of public health experts and the advice and orders of our government officials.
The world needs your courage, creativity, and intelligence to beat this virus — wishing each of you good health. All the best, Larry

23、When Ariel Cordova-Rojas rode her bike to Jamaicia Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, New York, last November, she planned to go hiking and bird-watching. Bingo!
A mile into her walk, she spotted a beautiful female mute swan (疣鼻天鹅) near the water’s edge. Cordova-Rojas, 30, who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund recovery center in Manhattan, knew that mute swans can be battle some. But as she approached this one, it didn’t move. She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Cordova-Rojas placed her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. And then a thought struck her: What do I do now?
Her best bet was the recovery center, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way? Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station. She worried others might be disturbed. However, on the subway, no one seemed particularly fazed by the feathered passenger. One guy, says Cordova-Rojas, was “sitting right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him”.
Cordova-Rojas called the recovery center, and Tristan Higgin-botham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove bird, bike, and the rescuer to the facility. There, staff members determined that the swan might have lead poisoning.
The staff got the swan back up on her feet. She even made a boyfriend at the center — another injured swan. Sadly, even with all that tender loving care, the swan fell ill with a bacterial infection. Two months after Cordova-Roias came to her rescue, she passed away.
It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big city-literally. In all, Cordova-Rojas traveled two hours by foot, car, and subway (with her bike). “That’s the perfect summary of who she is,” says Higginbotham.

B.She found the swan trapped in water.

D.Many people came to visit the swan,
【4】What sort of person was Cordova-Rojas?
A.Curious and generous.
B.Caring and thoughtful.
C.Energetic and independent.
D.Sensible and straight-forward.

It was a beautiful day for sightseeing around downtown Portland. We were a bunch of campers on our day off, just out for some fun. The weather was perfect for a picnic, so when lunch time came, we set our sights on a small park in the town. Since we all had different appetites, we decided to split up, get what each of us wanted, and meet back on the grass in a few minutes.
When my friend Robby headed for a hot dog stand, I decided to keep her company. We watched the stand owner put together the perfect hot dog, just the way Robby wanted it. But when she took out her money to pay him, the man surprised us.
“It looks a little cool on the side,” he said, “so never mind paying me. This will be my free gift of the day.”
We said our thanks, joined our friends in the park, and dug into our food. But as we talked and ate, I was distracted by a man sitting alone nearby, looking at us. I could tell that he hadn’t showered for days. Another homeless person, I thought, like all the others you see in cities. I didn’t pay much more attention than that.
We finished eating and decided to head off for more sightseeing. But when Robby and I went to the garbage can to throw away my lunch bag, I heard a weak voice ask, “There isn’t any food in that bag, is there? ”
It was the man who had been watching us. I didn’t know what to say. “No, I ate it already. ”
“Oh!” was his only answer. He was obviously hungry, couldn’t bear to see anything thrown away, and was used to asking this question.
I felt bad for the man, but I didn’t know what I could do. That’s when Robby said, “I’ll be right back. Please wait a minute,” and ran off.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
