  • 27、   Entering the already crowded festival site, I was a little uneasy. I'd heard discouraging tales of muddy fields, shocking toilet facilities and not being able to find your tent among so many others exactly the same as yours. I had, of course, tried to prepare for every possibility.

The five-day Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts is the largest open-air music festival in the world. But it's not just music at the festival. As I wandered about the site, I realized that this was, indeed, a festival of performing arts. There were theatre tents, dance performances, and mime artists all over the site. You certainly wouldn't starve in this place, either. I'd never seen so many food stands (摊位) in my life.

The famous Pyramid Stage had its usual lineup of great bands and there were plenty of big names playing on the Other Stage, too. In fact, there were so many stages, with so many different types of music and things going on, that it was really difficult to see and do everything you wanted to. I found myself running from one stage to the next, trying to catch at least part of my favourite acts, and still missed a few altogether.

Then it was all over, and I had to pack up my possessions and head back to the real world again. It had been a pleasant surprise to discover that 100,000 people filled into muddy fields could still manage to have the time of their lives. Tickets aren't cheap, but since over £1 million in profits from the festival goes to charity, it would be childish to complain. I left holding the souvenirs bought from various stalls, and with a warm, happy feeling that I'm sure is shared by anyone who has experienced the magic of the Glastonbury Festival.

1How did the author feel when she arrived at the festival?

    A. She was sorry for being late.

    B. She was shocked by the toilets.

    C. She was afraid the festival would not be enjoyable.

    D. She was regretful that her favourite artist was not there.

2What impression did the author get walking around the festival site?

    A. It was a theatrical festival.

    B. There was little food to eat.

    C. It was easy to get lost on the site.

    D. There were lots of performances to see.

3Which of the following surprised the author?

    A. The money from the festival would be donated to charity.

    B. Tickets for the festival were very expensive.

    C. The festival was pleasant despite the lack of comfort.

    D. Over 100,000 people enjoyed the muddy fields.

4What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

    A. To share an impressive experience.

    B. To advertise a traditional festival.

    C. To tell a discouraging story.

    D. To report a rare event.

  • 28、I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos(商标) in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one﹣it's so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald's, Apple, and Mercedes Benz own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.

    Nike

In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike's logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for﹩35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.

    McDonald's

The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the arch shaped (拱形的) signs on the side of the company's then walk﹣up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald's name was added to the logo in 1968.

    Apple

There are different stories behind Apple's logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steven Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn't stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff's "rainbow apple", a rainbow﹣colored silhouette (轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow﹣colored apple was replaced by the one﹣colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.

    Mercedes Benz

The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three﹣pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach's elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz Cie and DMG in 1926.

【1】What does the author think of the stories of the great logos?

    A.They are boring.

    B.They are attractive.

    C.They are out of date.

    D.They are practical.

【2】We can learn that Apple's present logo is ___.

A.a bitten apple with only one color

B.Newton's sitting under an apple tree

C.the religious story of Adam and Eve

    D.the rainbow﹣colored bitten apple

【3】Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos?

    A.Nike ﹣ McDonald's ﹣ Apple ﹣ Mercedes Benz.

    B.Mercedes Benz ﹣ Apple ﹣ Nike ﹣ McDonald's.

    C.Mercedes Benz ﹣ McDonald's ﹣ Nike ﹣ Apple.

    D.Nike ﹣ Mercedes Benz ﹣ McDonald's ﹣ Apple.

  • 29、   We already know that a lack of sleep will actually prevent your brain from being able to make new memories. You end up feeling as though you’re amnesiac.

A lack of sleep will lead to an increased development of a protein in the brain connected with Alzheimer’s disease because it is during deep sleep at night that a system within the brain starts to wash away this protein. So if you’re not getting enough sleep each and every night, more of that Alzheimer’s-related protein will build up. The more protein that builds up, the greater your risk of developing Alzheimer will be in later life.

What are the effects of the lack of sleep on the body? We know that a lack of sleep impacts your immune system(免疫系统).After just one night of four to five hours of sleep, there is a 70%reduction in immune cells called natural killer cells. And that’s the reason that short sleep predicts your risk for developing many forms of cancer.

In fact, the link between a lack of sleep and cancer is now so strong that recently the World Health Organization decided to classify any form of nighttime shift work as a probable cause of cancer. It is during deep sleep at night that your heart rate drops, your blood pressure goes down. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your blood pressure rises. If you’re getting six hours of sleep or less, you’ll have a 200%increased risk of having a deadly heart attack or stroke in your lifetime.

There is a global experiment that is performed on 1.6 billion people twice a year and it’s called daylight savings time. And we know that in the spring, when we lose one hour of sleep, we see a 24%increase in heart attacks the following day.

Another question, perhaps, is what is the recycle rate of a human being? How long can we actually last without sleep before we start to see worsening in your brain function? And the answer seems to be about 16 hours of wakefulness. Once you get past 16 hours of being awake, that’s when we start to see mental and physical damages in the body. We know that after you’ve been awake for 19 or 20 hours, your mental capacity(心智能力)is so damaged that you would be as slow as someone who was drunk. So if you were to ask me what is the recycle rate of a human being, it does seem to be about 16 hours and we need about eight hours of sleep to repair the damage of wakefulness.

1The underlined word “amnesiac” in Paragraph 1 probably means

    A.sleepy B.tolerant C.relieved D.forgetful

2According to the article, we can infer that_

A.the more you sleep, the more protein there will be

B.you’re more likely to suffer heart attacks in the spring

C.deep sleep at night protects you from a harmful protein

D.you’ll develop many forms of cancer due to short sleep

    3When you’re awake over 16 hours,   .

A.your brain won’t function in a proper way B.your brain needs at least 8 hours to recover

C.you must have drunk large amounts of wine D.you walk as slowly as the physically disabled

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Sleeping sickness kills B.Enough sleep counts

C.Less sleep causes cancer D.Sleep is necessary for man

Chinese medical expert have warned that antibiotics (抗生素)are “ 1 overused” in hospitals, which may cause serious side-effects for the health of an entire generation.

According to the ministry, 70 percent of Chinese inpatients have received antibiotics, while the maximum number set by the World Health Organization is 30 percent. About 97 percent of 2 patients used antibiotics but research showed that a large number of them could avoid the need if hospitals conducted proper sanitation(公共卫生)measures.

Particularly, antibiotics are overused in the 3 of children. Nearly one third of the daily 10,000 outpatients at the Beijing children’s Hospital take intravenous drips(静脉输液)that largely contain antibiotics.

“Some doctors might lack proper training on how to 4antibiotics in a more precise way and avoid 5risks. Some simply want to play it safe,” said Zhu Zhenggang, president of Shanghai-based Ruijin Hospital.

The ministry 6 a nationwide campaign over the past six months to 7 the use of antibiotics. Vice Health Minister Ma Xiaowei admitted that the government faces great challenges as many public hospitals have 8 supervision on prescription(处方)safety under heavy pressure from patients.

Insiders also noted that the overuse of antibiotics was partly 9by profit-seeking pharmacy (制药)firms.

About 60 percent of the newly 10 medicines by the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) last year were antibiotics. According to the SFDA, the country reported 690,000 cases of adverse drug reactions caused by abuse of medicine, including 600 deaths in 2010.
