26、 US cosmologist (宇宙学家) Carl Sagan once said: “Across the sea of space, the stars are other suns.”
For centuries, human beings have dreamed of traveling into space, orbiting (围绕......运行) our little blue planet, and appreciating incredible views of sunrises and sunsets. And soon, it seems that our dream will finally come true, as US startup Orion Span announced on April 6 that it planned to launch the first hotel in space in 2021. It will be ready to welcome guests the following year.
The space hotel, Aurora Station, will orbit 320 kilometers above Earth, circling it every 90 minutes. It’s capable of housing two crew members and four guests. The crew members will likely be former NASA astronauts who worked on the International Space Station. However, there’s a catch: Each guest must pay at least $9.5 million (60 million yuan) for a 12-day stay at the hotel.
Once aboard the Aurora Station, guests will find many exciting things to do. According to Orion Span, guests can enjoy the excitement of zero-gravity as they fly throughout the space hotel. They can watch 16 sunrises and sunsets every day and view the northern and southern auroras (极光) through the many windows. They can take part in research experiments like growing food, and even take it home as a souvenir. And they can stay in touch with their families and friends via a high-speed internet connection.
But most importantly, the trip will offer a real sense of what it’s like to live in space. “The premise (前提) of Aurora Station is for guests to live, feel, and [breathe] what it’s like to be an astronaut,” Frank Bunger, founder of Orion Span, told the Robb Report. “The food and drinks are freeze-dried products. It’s not going to be five-star dining … Fire and gas don’t work the same way in space as they do on Earth.”
To better prepare guests for space travel, the company will require a health screening and provide a three-month training program that helps guests understand basic spaceflight, orbital mechanics (轨道力学) and life in the pressurized environment of space.
Some may have doubts about the project, but the company even has plans to turn part of Aurora Station into private apartments. “Future Aurora owners can live in, visit, or sublease (转租) their space [apartment],” Bunger said in a news release. “This is an exciting frontier (待开发的领域) and Orion Span is proud to pave the way.”

27、 My brother Stanley died last January from cancer，and I spent a lot of time with him in hospital over his last few months. I witnessed the care he received and，at the time，I thought it was poor. It shocked and hurt me.
While Stanley was sick，I was a medical student. I therefore put a lot of time and energy in the medical profession. All this affected the way I thought about my studies. Did I want to work in a field where people treated patients as if they were numbers on a chart？After Stanley died，I finished my studies and graduated with all the rest of students in my year. They went on to get jobs in hospitals，while I took a year out. I simply couldn't face working in medicine.
Finally，I applied for and got a position as a cancer doctor in a busy clinic in a big city. Now I was a cancer doctor myself，and I often had to tell patients bad news. It is a terribly difficult thing to inform someone that they have a serious illness. I also found that I couldn't always answer patients' questions. They would want to know whether they could be cured，or how long they would live，but it wasn't always possible to say.
It was then that I understood what difficult job health providers do. It made me think back to my experiences with doctors and nurses when Stanley was sick. Perhaps what I had thought was unprofessionalism(不专业)or coldness was just a reflection of the demanding nature of the work.
I began to see my patients as Stanley，and myself no longer as his sister，but one of his caregivers.
Now I was in their shoes-the people who spend every day caring for others.
I still miss Stanley horribly，but at least now the anger has gone.

28、In a study published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, Diana Deutsch of the University of California and her co-authors find that musicians who speak an East Asian tone language fluently are much more likely to have perfect pitch(音高).
Unlike English, many East Asian languages, such as Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese, are “tonal”, so that a word’s meaning often depends on the tone in which it is said. So learning perfect pitch is, for fluent speakers of a tone language, similar to learning a second tone language.
The study looked at 203 students at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music through a test. The students listened to the 36 notes. They attempted to identify the notes, and they self-reported their musical, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds — including whether they were very fluent in an East Asian tone language, fairly fluent or not at all fluent. Deutsch and her colleagues found that students who spoke an East Asian tone language very fluently scored nearly 100 percent on the test, and that students who were only fairly fluent in a tone language scored lower overall. Those students who were not at all fluent in speaking a tone language scored the worst on average.
Deutsch acknowledges that it still remains to be discovered why and how it is that some speakers of non-tone languages have perfect pitch. She expects it to be related to either an exceptionally long “critical window” for language acquisition, a very early musical upbringing, or both.
“Perfect pitch for years seemed like a beautiful gift — given only to a few genetically talented people. But our research suggests that it might be available to virtually everybody,” Deutsch said. She also proposed that parents who want their kids to acquire perfect pitch should expose them to musical tones from infancy onwards.
