21、 Low self-esteem makes us feel bad about ourselves. But did you know that over time it also can cause the development of serious mental conditions such as depression?
Self-esteem is, very simply, the set of feelings you have about yourself. It’s developed by your experiences, thoughts, feelings, and relationships.
Unlike self-knowledge, which refers to how much you know about yourself, the core of self-esteem is formed around whether you like yourself or not.
Depression is much more than just feeling sad. It consume your energy, makes everyday activities difficult and interferes with your eating and sleeping patterns. Psychotherapy and/or medication are highly effective in treating depression.
There are several types of depressive disorders, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, psychotic depression, postpartum depression, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
Clinicians use low self-esteem as one possible symptom when they diagnose the psychiatric condition of major depressive disorder. They don’t necessarily care whether low self-esteem causes the depression or vice versa.
However, personality researchers have long wondered about the chicken-and-egg problem of self-esteem and depression. Certainly, if you dislike yourself, you’ll be more likely to be depressed. Conversely, if you’re depressed, you’ll be more likely to feel bad about who you are as a person.
The only way to disentangle the highly related concepts of self-esteem and depression is through longitudinal research, in which people are followed up over time. A study on depression, conducted by University of Basel researchers Julia Sowislo and Ulrich Orth, contrasted the competing directions of self-esteem to depression vs depression to self-esteem.
The findings almost all overwhelmingly support the vulnerability model of self-esteem and depression. Over time, low self-esteem is a risk factor for depression, regardless of who is tested and how. The study indicated that low self-esteem causes depression but not vice versa.
Therefore, if a person has low self-esteem, there’s an increased risk of developing depression. This is a very important discovery because it shows that improving a person’s self-esteem can make him or her feel better.

22、There is a collection of positive habits that make a person so successful in class. 【1】
Here are some habits of top students that you can use as tips to do better at school:
First, they don't always do all of their homework. 【2】 But it can be the biggest time-suck(耗时的)for most students. Working problems is one of the best ways to turn new concepts into working knowledge, but you'll never see on an exam a large majority of those problems that take you hours and hours to work through.
Second, they never "read through" the textbook. 【3】 Top students use examples and practice problems, but otherwise use Google, lecture notes, and old exams for study materials.
Third, they test themselves frequently. Testing yourself strengthens your brain's connections to new materials. It gives you immediate and clear feedback on whether you know something or not. 【4】
Last, they study in short bursts, not long marathons. Studying in short burst tends to help you focus strongly. 【5】 This also fits in nicely with our natural activity or rest cycle of our bodies. That makes studying continuously for multiple hours on end possible.
A.They always focus on their homework.
B.They spent some time doing their favorite things.
C.Because you know there is at least a short break coming.
D.In college, homework assignments generally make up 5-20% of your grade.
E.Bottom line, repeated self-testing significantly improves long-term memory of new materials.
F.Per time spent, reading the textbook is one of the least effective methods for learning new materials.
G.An accumulation of such habits can combine to produce high-level academic performance.
23、Last year, Claire Noble-Randall woke up at 5:30 am every morning. She had to catch two buses to arrive in time for first-period chemistry at Ingraham High School in Seattle, US.
Ingraham starts at 8 am, but Noble-Randall often didn’t go to sleep until after midnight. “It was really hard not to fall asleep in class,” she said.
Her mom solved the problem this year when she discovered that other parents had hired a private city tour bus to take their children to the school.
“Now, she leaves the house at a much more reasonable time 7:10 in the morning…to catch the little tour bug at 7:23 am,” said her mother, Noelle Noble.
That may be one way to help students get more sleep. But more than 3,300 people have signed an online petition (请愿) looking for a better solution from the Seattle school district. Those who have signed the petition want all high schools and middle schools to start no earlier than 8:30 am. Most of Seattle’s high schools and middle schools start at 8 am or earlier.
Later start times for teenagers is an idea that some parents around the nation, have wanted for years. They’ve provided plenty of scientific evidence that teenagers tend to be night owls and delayed start times improve their health, mood, attention, and, in some cases, learning.
But attempts to delay start times for teenagers haven’t worked. Coaches don’t want late dismissals (放学) cutting into sports practices; community groups don’t want to wait longer for gyms and fields and before- and after-school programs don’t want to change their schedules.
This time, however, they’ve got Seattle School Board. President Sharon Peaslee on their side. She herself is the mother of two high school students. Peaslee hopes other board members will pass her plan calling on the district to find a way to make the changes.
【1】How did Noble-Randal solve her problem of early classes?
A. She quit first-period classes.
B. She found a faster way to the school.
C. She took a private city tour bus to the school.
D. Her family moved to a house near the school.
【2】People who signed the online petition want schools to ________.
A. provide a school bus service
B. delay school start times
C. improve the quality of lessons
D. stop students from falling asleep in class
【3】Why did parents’ attempts to change school start times fail?
A. Not enough people signed the petition.
B. No scientific evidence could support their idea.
C. It would influence the schools’ schedules.
D. It would influence many out-of-school activities,
【4】What can we infer from the article?
A. More parents will hire a private bus for their children.
B. Seattle schools plan to change their schedules next year.
C. There will be less after-school activities and programs.
D. There is now a higher chance of delaying school start times.
24、The latest Chinese mission to space has made Wang Yaping the first Chinese woman to perform a spacewalk. Before Wang, only 15 women globally had conducted spacewalks since 1984. In the 60 years during which humans have been launched into the orbit, an all-female mission tends to be avoided because it seems like a stunt to purposefully draw attention. But Shenzhou XIII’s six-month journey in space has left much curiosity about the differences between male and female astronauts. Despite great challenges, women’s bodies and minds are uniquely suited for space missions.
First, the weight advantage. Lower body weights are just a small part of it. The rest of the difference comes from the amount of food, oxygen, and other resources needed to keep smaller humans alive. On average, men require 5 to 25 percent more calories a day than women. Smaller people produce less waste, which lowers demands to recycle and remove it. So women are physically more efficient in the sense.
There are considerations beyond the physical conditions. Scientists found that men tend to do well in shorter-term, goal-oriented situations, while women are better in longer-term, steady circumstances, People in steady circumstances are more communicative. Women are born with the social skill, so they are more likely to get along well on long-time space missions.
Does this mean that there is no reason to send men on these missions? Not quite. Data suggests that mixed-gender(性别)teams are the most successful overall.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
All through school, I had only one close friend. We spent years together, essentially joined at the hip. But then Greg moved away, and I never thought it would take more than 40 years to bring us together again.
As children, Greg and I dove into everything with passion. At that time, we were pure and kind, full of curiosity and expectation for life. We raced our bikes and illustrated our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same blonde girl from around the corner, a sixth-grader named Joanne who barely knew we existed.
The last time I saw Greg was sometime in 1966. It was so short a meeting that I couldn't recall saying goodbye before he moved. Since then, we lost touch.
But then, a few summers ago, I saw a familiar woman. "Excuse me. Would your name happen to be Joanne?”
“Uh, yes…” She didn't recognize me until I explained who I was. We hadn't exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime. “Have you stayed in touch with Greg?” she asked. I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.
“No. I haven't,” I admitted. “I wish I had.”
Back at the cabin I checked my messages. I glanced at one email, and then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg.
Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician and entrepreneur(企业家). We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone. A month later, my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family in person.
