  • 23、   Dr. John Wilkins was a natural philosopher who lived from 1614 until 1672. He was crazy about getting to the moon and meeting the people who surely lived there. Wilkins believed that anything as Earth-like as the moon must have been created by God for living beings, and he was determined to meet them — despite the fact that he was three centuries ahead of his time.

In the 1600s, the scientific understanding of gravity and outer space was limited. Wilkins believed, like many 17th-century scientists, that there was no difference between the atmosphere of Earth and the conditions in space, and that Earth’s pull was due to magnetism (磁力). It was only reasonable, then, that Wilkins believed a two-wheeled horse-drawn battle car with wings with enough speed could lift high enough off the ground to break free of Earth’s magnetic pull and reach the moon.

Then Wilkins moved on to more pressing issues with his remarkable ability to think of new ideas: How would travelers feed themselves during the journey? He theorized that the main cause of hunger was simply the act of working against gravity, so getting to the moon without being burdened by it would be able to be realized. There was some knowledge at that time about the fact that air gets thinner and colder the higher up you go, but he had a fix for that too, “moistened sponges (湿润的海绵) might help us against its thinness”.

By studying the way in which birds fly, which also happened to be part of the studies that led to planes and rockets centuries later, Wilkins put his theory to the test with the help of a colleague, Robert Hooke. Neither of the two ever recorded their attempts, but it’s somewhat safe to say that it didn’t work out. Hooke himself may have been the reason he gave up hope, in fact, since he was part of the team that discovered space was a place without oxygen.

1What do we know about Dr. John Wilkins?

A.He dreamed of landing on the moon.

B.He wrote about people living on the moon.

C.He urged the public to know more about space.

D.He had a rich knowledge of space in the 1670s.

2Which of the following might Wilkins agree with?

A.The air on the moon is not fit for human beings.

B.People don’t need to eat things on the moon.

C.Earth’s magnetism can be changed easily.

D.Oxygen doesn’t exist in outer space.

    3What can be concluded from Paragraphs 2 & 3?

A.Wilkins had prepared a lot in theory.

B.Wilkins was ready for his moon-landing.

C.Wilkins made a great contribution to philosophy.

D.Wilkins was the greatest natural philosopher in history.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

    A.To honor a great scientist.

B.To encourage studies on outer space.

C.To introduce an early attempt of moon-landing.

D.To inform people of the knowledge about the universe.

  • 24、   Some people believe that international sport creates goodwill between the nations and that if countries play games together they will learn to live together. Others say that the opposite is true: international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in recent years the Olympic Games have done little to support the view that sports encourage international brotherhood. Not only was there the incident of tragedy involving murders of athletes, but the Games were also ruined by lesser incidents caused principally by minor national contests.

One country received its second-place medals with visible anger after the hockey final. There had been noisy scenes at the end of the hockey match, as the losers disagreed with the final decisions. They believed that one of their goals should have been allowed and that their opponents' victory was unfair. Their manager was in great anger when he said: “This isn't hockey. Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished.” The president of the Federation said later that such behavior could result in the suspension(停赛) of the team for at least three years.

The American basketball team announced that they would not yield first place to Russia, after a disputable(有争议的) end to their contest. The game had ended in disorder. It was thought at first that the United States had won by a single point, but it was announced that there were three seconds still to play. A Russian player then threw the ball from one end of the court to the other, and another player popped it into the basket. It was the first time the US had ever lost an Olympic basketball match. An appeal jury (评审委员会) debated the matter for four and a half hours before announcing that the result would stand. The American players then voted not to receive the silver medals.

Incidents of this kind will continue as long as sport is played competitively rather than for the love of the game. The suggestion that athletes should compete as individuals or in non-national teams, might be too much to hope for. But in the present organization of the Olympics there is far too much that encourages aggressive patriotism (爱国主义).

1According to the author, recent Olympic Games have _______.

    A.created goodwill between the nations

    B.hardly showed any international friendship

    C.caused only false national pride

D.led to more and more misunderstanding and hatred

2What did the manager mean by saying, “...Hockey and the International Hockey Federation are finished”?

A.Hockey and the Federation are ruined by the unfair decisions.

B.His team would no longer take part in international games.

C.There should be no more hockey matches organized by the Federation.

    D.The Federation should be ended.

3Which statement best summarizes this passage?

    A.Athletes should compete as individuals.

B.Different teams often have disputes when fighting for the first place.

C.Any team that has disrespectful behavior should be suspended.

D.The organization of the Olympic Games must be improved.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、An interesting study found capuchin monkeys (僧帽猴), like humans, are guided by social emotions. Try paying one monkey with grapes and another with cucumbers for the _______ amount of work and you may be surprised at the results! The monkey who got the cucumbers will probably _______ working for you. He may even throw out the cucumbers, even though monkeys are usually _______ to receive them, says Sarah Brosnan, a psychology professor at Georgia State University.

That experiment by Brosnan and Frans de Wall published in 2003 in Nature was one of the first to show that animals may have an assessment for _______ — a moral sense that many researchers previously thought only humans possessed. Since then, many results have suggested that animals — particularly those that depend on _______ for their survival may have an inborn sense of justice.

Social animals, which are interdependent for a living, will _______ share rewards with others who worked toward the same goal. “The built-in sense didn’t develop first in humans. It’s possibly something that began in social species, and _______ to us.” Brosnan said in an interview.

One study _______ that some animals particularly the ones that hunt together divide up the rewards. Another study even finds that animals will occasionally deliver a better reward to a partner than they themselves _______. In research by Brosnan and her colleagues published in American Journal of Primatology, two capuchin monkeys had to work together to pull a plate of food to their cages. But before they began pulling, the monkeys had to decide which one would get a grape and which one would get an apple slice. ________ fighting over the grape or always letting the leading monkey eat it, the animals generally vary roles on the way, so they both earned some grapes and some apple slices, Brosnan found. In cases where the ________ monkey always got the good food, the other monkey were likely to give up participating. More often than not, it preferred to ________ a reward than be paid unfairly.

According to Brosnan, that tendency to share rewards fairly probably developed as a result of the way capuchins work together to hunt. “If we are hunting and I am not giving you much of the kill, you would be better off finding another ________,” she says.

However, interpreting animal behavior through human eyes can be ________, observes Marc Hauser, a Harvard psychology professor and evolutionary biologist. In the cucumber-grape study, for example, the monkeys could have ________ the cucumbers simply because they were annoyed that they didn’t get a grape once they saw it.
