二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Hurricane Fiona, killing 16 people and bringing the power system to a 3-day stop, struck Puerto Rico, an island country located between Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, on September 18, almost five years after Hurricane Maria hit the island, showing that, as researchers have long warned, storms are now more frequent and cause more damage due to climate change.

Back in 2017, Hurricane Maria killed thousands of people and left millions without power for a week. A study in 2019 found that the possibility of terrible events like Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico is now almost five times higher due to climate change.

The storms were similar in many ways but had their own features. Maria was a Category (类别) 4 hurricane whose speed was up to 155 mph, while Fiona, a Category 1 storm when it landed Puerto Rico, was gentler, with winds of up to 85 mph, which later increased to 115 mph as the storm progressed through the island.

And yet, the heavy rain caused by Fiona brought Puerto Rico to its knees. According to the data by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the slow moving storms brought 15.80 inches of rain over a 5-day period, slightly more than Maria at 14.72 inches

This confirms another long-held thought that, with climate change, horrible storms will not only become more common but also wetter. That’s because the increase in temperatures is leading to more loss of water from the sea and warmer air can hold more water vapor (水蒸气). The average temperature all over the world has already increased by nearly 1.2℃ due to climate change and for each 1℃ of warming, the air’s ability to hold water is thought to increase by about 7%. The latest research suggests that the increase may be three times higher, at 21%.

【1】What was a direct cause of more storms in Puerto Rico?

    A.Loss of forests.

    B.Puerto Rico’s location.

    C.Human activity.

    D.Climate change.

【2】Compared with Maria, what’s the feature of Fiona progressing through Puerto Rico?

    A.It brought less rain.

    B.It moved a bit slower.

C.It caused a longer power cut.

    D.It brought more deaths.

【3】What do the figures in the last paragraph show?

    A.Rainfall increases with temperature rising.

B.Puerto Rico is a place raining all the time.

C.Storms are common in Puerto Rico.

    D.Slower storms cause more damage.

【4】What’s the best title for the text?

    A.Puerto Rico: Survival of People

    B.Puerto Rico: Frequent Floods

    C.Climate Change: Wetter Puerto Rico

D.Climate Change: Disasters on Their Way to Puerto Rico

  • 22、   In 2000, when I was around seven years old, my parents, sister, brother, and I were coming back from a T-ball game. There, in our driveway, we spotted two adult geese and a small gosling. The adults were startled by our return and flew away, but their baby was still too young to fly. We are no strangers to wildlife, so we avoided physical contact with the small gosling out of fear that it would keep us in its mind and be lost to its family forever. Hours passed, and night fell. The tiny little thing was wandering around our yard, unaware of what could happen.

And then another morning. And still another. Each morning, we would try to drive the goose over to his parents, who kept coming back to our yard. He wouldn’t go to them, though, and they wouldn’t come close enough to collect him. My sister Joanna decided to call the little guy Peeper, because he would follow us around the yard making a peeping noise, nonstop.

Almost a year passed. My family filled our days with feathery hugs and my dad would throw Peeper up into the air so he could fly a circle around the house.

One evening, my uncle came, and my dad wanted to show him Peeper’s circle. He threw him up in the air, but this time, Peeper just flew off. Everyone was very, very sad. We looked for him for days, calling his name, but he didn’t come back. Twenty years passed, and Peeper became a fond memory for my family.

Geese are very loyal, never forgetting their first home. Even so, it came as a total shock to me when, in 2020,an aging adult goose appeared at my home. At first, I assumed it was just another goose. After two weeks of the goose coming back repeatedly, it became clear to me that this wasn’t a random goose. He did all of the same things Peeper used to and responded to the name Peeper. My old best friend returned, 20 years later.

People desire connection with the natural world. Through Peeper, I have learned so much about myself and about the nature of love.

  • 23、When little kids line up for school picture day, there’s the typical nervousness and joking as they get ready to show off their brightest smiles. Maybe they’re wearing their best clothes or even sporting a new haircut.

But the children who sit in front of the camera as part of Project Picture Day are a special kind of subject. They’re kids in low-income communities who get to be the focus of attention for maybe the very first time.

Jules Alonzo brainstormed with his professional photographer friend, Jen Campos, about a way they could combine a love for photography and working with children in poor areas around the world. They came up with a concept and, in 2015, they had a trial run in Africa, taking photos of kids at school.

“I had gone on a five-week volunteer project a few years back and still had connections there. We got in touch with a school director there who spoke English well and was happy to have us,” said Alonzo.“It turned out to be a huge success.”   Since then, the non-profit organisation has reached 1,765 students in 14 schools in three countries.

The Project Picture Day team of four to six members goes into a school and sets up two stations with a camera, a tripod (三脚架), and so on. Campos decides where the best spots will be — whether inside or outside the classroom or school. Then the team spends two or three days photographing the students and editing and printing their photos. They also take a class photo and faculty pictures. On the final day, each student receives a 4×6 school portrait.

“The majority of the students laugh. It’s funny and maybe even embarrassing seeing a photo of yourself. They love to show their peers and everyone gets a good laugh,” said Alonzo.

“There’s a sense of pride. What we didn’t expect and love to see is,sometimes the students will exchange photos with their best friends. It’s actually really cute. Others run to their parents to show them. Honestly, the reactions are the best part of all of this.”

【1】In what aspect are children lining up for Project Picture Day special?

    A.They are too nervous.

    B.They are smiling happily.

B.A project to help children know the world more and better.

C.A project to help children dreaming of becoming film stars.

D.A project to help children who have few chances to take a photo.

【3】What do we know about their trial run of Project Picture Day?

    A.It lasted five days.

    B.The place was in Asia.

    C.It was not very successful.

D.They chose a school whose director spoke English well.

【4】What does the author intend to tell us in Paragraph 5?

A.What they do in a school.

B.Who are to be taken photos of.

C.Why the organization is not for profit.

D.How they are warmly received in schools.

  • 24、Mikah Frye, a 9-year-old boy, was walking down the streets with his grandmother discussing Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold night. Then he was thinking about a way to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas.

That thought stayed in Mikah Frye’s mind and when he reached home, Mikah informed his parents not to buy the Microsoft XBox gaming device he had asked for earlier. Mikah realized that by not buying the $300 device, he could instead donate over 30 blankets to the homeless. He knew how much it meant to be warm in the cold holiday season.

Three years ago, Mikah and his parents were the ones living in a homeless shelter. Having suffered a financial crisis, they too had lost their house, not knowing where their next meal would come from and sharing a blanket every night. Mikah was six years old then but he remembered what it was like to have to give back that precious blanket every morning.

Reaching out to the emergency shelter programme that looked after them 3 years ago, the family donated 60 blankets in the end, each with a personalized message of hope in Mikah’s handwriting stating: “They gave me a blanket, but I had to leave it. That’s why I want you to have your own blanket. Today, I live in my own house, and someday you will too. Your friend, Mikah.”

The homeless people at the shelter may not have been able to give Mikah a Christmas gift in return but his gesture was noted by the billion dollar company Microsoft who made sure that Mikah was fooled into visiting their store so that Santa Claus could personally deliver an XBox from the company to him as a reward for making the top of “Santa’s list of nice boys” that year.

【1】Why did Mikah give up his Christmas gift?

A.The device was out of date.

B.His parents had a tight budget.

C.He wanted to spend a warm Christmas.

D.He decided to do something charitable.

【2】What made Mikah have a better understanding of the situation of the homeless?

    A.His own experience.

    B.His parents’ education.

C.His visiting to the emergency shelter.

D.The cold weather during the holiday season.

【3】What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?

A.The homeless gave Mikah a gift in return.

B.He finally got the gift he wanted on Christmas.

C.The company Microsoft fooled Mikah into buying an Xbox.

D.Mikah wrote a thank-you note to the emergency shelter he lived in.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

    A.Mikah’s Precious Christmas Gift

    B.Mikah’s Giving Warmth on Christmas

C.Microsoft Rewarded Nice Boys on Santa’s List

D.The Homeless Needed Blankets on a Cold Christmas

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Priscilla and I had been classmates for several years but we never really liked each other. We had different groups of friends. Priscilla’s friends were very good at sports while my friends and I performed well in our studies. Priscilla was our school’s top athlete and was constantly praised by our teachers. I was jealous of her athletic abilities and her popularity at school. Maliciously (怀有恶意地), I thought she was just manipulating the teachers and her friends with her charm. I felt she was an insincere and shallow person. Therefore, I wanted to have nothing to do with her.

One afternoon, our class attended an adventure camp. One of the activities we participated in was rock climbing. I was very keen to learn rock climbing. We practiced first on a rock climbing wall, and once we had mastered the skills, we could go on to climb the cliff in the forest reserve. Rock climbers must work with a partner. While one person climbs, the partner must hold on tightly to the other end of the rope for safety. If the climber falls, the partner is responsible for stopping the fall.

The trainer assigned Priscilla to be my partner! I was very upset. How could I trust Priscilla? She would not stop me from falling. She would probably wish that I would fall. However, there was nothing I could do because the trainer wouldn’t allow us to change partners. So I climbed and Priscilla held on to the safety rope.

While climbing, a wave of joy and confidence came over me. I cautiously made my way up the wall, caught each notch (凹槽) above tightly, and pulled myself up. Every muscle in my body was shaking from the strain of climbing but I wanted to prove to everyone that I was a better rock climber than Priscilla. Thinking about outperforming Priscilla, my focus on climbing left me as I reached for a notch that was too far from my reach. I took a risk and jumped up to grab it.
