二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Tree planting used to be regarded as an effective means of controlling climate change. Perhaps it’s time for us to rethink this practice.

Trees pull carbon dioxide or CO2 from the air. This effectively removes CO2 from the atmosphere, making trees an important part of the fight against climate change. But trees only hold onto carbon dioxide as long as they’re alive. Once they die, trees will rot and release that CO2 back into the atmosphere.

Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever. Rising CO2, mainly due to burning fossil fuels, is probably driving that rapid growth, said Roel Brienen, a forest ecologist at the University of Leeds, UK. High levels of this gas are increasing temperatures, which in turn speeds tree growth in those areas, he added.

The faster trees grow, the faster they store carbon. It seems like good news. However, it is known that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives than their slow-growing relatives.

In order to see whether the growth-lifespan trade-off (生长和寿命之间的权衡) is a universal phenomenon, Brienen and his colleagues analyzed over 210,000 individual tree ring records of 110 tree species from more than 70,000 sites worldwide. “By measuring tree rings’ widths one can tell how fast trees grew, while counting rings provides information on tree ages and allows making inferences about trees’ maximum lifespan,” Brienen explained.

The team also created a computer program that modeled a forest and tweaked (轻微调整) the growth of the trees in this model. Early on, it showed that “the forest could hold more carbon as the trees grew faster”, Brienen reported. But after 20 years, these trees started dying and losing this extra carbon again. “We must understand that the only solution to bring down CO2 levels is to stop emitting (排放) it into the atmosphere,” said Brienen.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Climate change is affecting trees’ lifespan.

B.Studies found that trees that die sooner release more CO2.

C.Trees aren’t such a reliable solution to global warming.

D.Scientists are working on whether forests can hold more carbon.

【2】What may be causing trees to grow faster?

    A.The formation of fossil fuels.

    B.The increase of atmospheric CO2.

    C.Lower temperatures.

D.The evolution of some species of trees.

【3】What can people know by measuring tree rings’ widths?

    A.The speed of trees’ growth.

    B.The trees’ age.

    C.The trees’ maximum lifespan.

    D.The trees’ habitats.

【4】What do Roel Brienen’s words in the last paragraph probably mean?

A.It is hard for trees to hold more carbon.

B.The CO2 level is impossible to bring down.

C.We must find other ways to store CO2.

D.We can only reduce CO2 by preventing its emissions.

  • 22、Back in the distant past, job candidates had interests or hobbies. For example, reading a book was a perfectly acceptable way of spending your spare time. No longer. Today you will probably be asked if you have a “personal passion project”, and the more exhausting your answer sounds, the better.

Passion is becoming basic for workplace success. A new piece of research from Jon Jachimowicz and Hannah Weisman of Harvard Business School includes an analysis of 200 million job postings in America. It finds that the number which mentions “passion” rose over time, from 2% in 2007 to 16% in 2019.

On the surface this makes sense. Better, surely, for an employee to be enthusiastic than not. Most workers want to do a job they love; most companies want a workforce that is committed and motivated.

But passion can affect judgment. For firms, the obvious danger is rewarding commitment over competence. The super-keen employee who volunteers for everything may not be that great at their job. Some research finds that passion may indeed be blinding managers to reality: it finds that even when the performance of passionate employees is on the downward slope, they are still more likely to be given promotions than peers who tend not to say much.

There are only so many ways to communicate passion. Widening your eyes and nodding wildly: too weird. Jumping, cheering and sweating: even weirder. Working ever longer hours, on the other hand, is a fairly simple way to show that your commitment is beyond question.

It is great to feel passion for your job. But if you are up at 4 am for a meeting with Asia, constantly working on your holiday or have just been handed a mop (抹布) and a bucket by your boss, you are in the grasp of something that is not entirely healthy.

【1】What do the statistics in Paragraph 2 indicate?

    A.Passion is valued in workplace.

    B.Success depends on working passion.

C.The study has been newly conducted.

D.Lots of job postings are provided nowadays.

【2】What can we know from the fourth paragraph?

A.Managers tend to promote talented employees.

B.It is dangerous to reward passionate employees.

C.Passionate employees may be promoted improperly.

D.The employee who shows passion is not a good one.

【3】What is the author’s attitude toward passion at work?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Objective.

    C.Negative.

    D.Uncaring.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

    A.Greater Pressure from Work

    B.The Fashion for Passion

    C.Higher Demand for Interests

    D.The Advantages of Passion

  • 23、   The great thing about libraries is that they house all types of books — from mysteries to biography and dramas — all in one location. The bad thing about libraries is that they house all types of books in one location, and if it’s a location you cannot get to, you are out of luck. Now, mobile library solutions are appearing quickly around the country to bring books to people who need them.

A few years ago, when the Little Free Libraries Movement kicked off, more people of all ages could have access to books. Now, more than 1,5000 free book stands can be found across the globe, bringing books to unexpected places. But many folks are simply not in a position to get to the places where the books are. Bookmobile buses are a good solution, but they can be expensive to fund and to operate.

Books on Bikes programs are popping up in areas where there is a strong bike culture, in some regions like Seattle, or a strong need to bring books to the masses, for example, in San Francisco.

The Seattle Public Library’s Books on Bike program consists of three bike/trailer combos (组合) that librarians bring to community events. The trailers are even Wi-Fi enabled so that visitors can sign up for a library card and browse (浏览) the library’s card catalogue on the spot.

“Seattle has a really strong bike culture so we want to tap into that and provide full service library programs but do it in a way that is quick and smart,” librarian Jared Mills said in an interview.

San Francisco’s program, called Bibliobicicleta, was launched in 2013 by librarian Alicia Tapia. Her trailer can hold about 100 books and attracts readers of all ages and income levels. It’s an independent, donation-based library — like a Little Free Library, but on wheels.

When asked why she would start a free library on a bike, Tapia answers, “Why not? Bikes are cool, and can go anywhere.”

【1】What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Free libraries on bikes.

    B.Unique bicycle cultures.

    C.Popular online libraries.

    D.Various library movements.

【2】The underlined words in paragraph 5 are closest in meaning to ______.

    A.come up with

    B.stay in touch with

    C.keep pace with

    D.take advantage of

【3】What did Tapia think of the program?

    A.Environment-friendly.

    B.Practical.

    C.Controversial.

    D.Profitable.

  • 24、A work of art created by artificial intelligence (AI) has been sold by a major art seller for the first time. The print sold for an unexpectedly large amount of $432, 500. The artwork was bought during an auction (拍卖) Thursday at Christie’s, an art house, in New York City. Officials had predicted it would sell for between $7, 000 and $10, 000.

In a website post, Christie’s said the AI-created work was the first ever sold by a major auction house. It praised the sale as a signal of “the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.”

The artwork, called “Portrait (肖像) of Edmond Belamy,” was made by a machine learning algorithm (算法). The AI system was created by members of an art group called Obvious in Paris, France. It shows the portrait of a man, looking similar to subjects shown in historical paintings. Christie’s described some differences of the AI-created work compared to other art it sells. For example, it said some parts of the face were not as clearly drawn as those painted by artists. Also some parts of the print were left empty. However, Christie’s sale organizer Richard Lloyd said the piece was very similar to many others sold over many years.

Three creators from the art group Obvious cooperated on the process that made the print. First they put a collection of 15,000 portraits into a machine learning system. The portraits were painted by artists from the time period between the 14th and 20th centuries. Then a tool called the “Generator” made a new image based on the information entered into the system. After that, another tool, called a “Discriminator”, attempted to find differences between the human-made image and the one created by the Generator. Then the image was improved. “The aim is to fool the Discriminator into thinking that the new images are real-life portraits. Then we have a result.” Obvious group member Hugo Caselles-dupre said in a statement.

【1】It can be inferred from the text that___________.

A.the AI portrait received much recognition

B.there is little true artistic value in AI artwork

C.technology will one day replace human artists

D.there is no similar AI system for art at present

【2】What does the underlined word “subjects” in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Artists.

    B.Machines

    C.Figures

    D.Techniques.

【3】What is the final purpose of a “Discriminator” ?

A.To select useful information from real-life portraits.

B.To help the portrait more like a human-made one.

C.To put human portraits into the machine learning system.

D.To create a portrait based on paintings by human artists

【4】What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.The Secret of AI

    B.AI Portrait Sold

    C.Artwork and AI

    D.AI Art at Christie’s
