21、If you find it hard to learn English, think of the foreigners who learn Chinese. The number of people learning Chinese around the world reached 100 million in 2017, up from 30 million in 2004, according to People’s Daily.
But what difficulties do foreigners usually face when learning Chinese? And how do they overcome these difficulties? Mike has lived in China for nine years and here is his story of learning Chinese:
Like many foreigners, I only knew two words of Chinese (“hello” and “thank you”) when I first came to China, so simple tasks like ordering food or taking a taxi were quite difficult for me.
I knew I had to learn more Chinese, so I signed up for classes. However, I didn’t learn enough to have a real conversation. Later I studied on my own, but my progress was still slow and I became upset.
Finally, I found the best way to learn Chinese was to make friends with native speakers and spend time with them. I started playing in a band with a Chinese woman who later became one of my best friends in Beijing. I learned a lot of Chinese by hanging out with her, and she learned English from me too. So it was a good way to exchange language and culture.
Now I’ve learned enough Chinese to take care of a few complicated (复杂的) tasks, like booking train tickets and speaking with my landlord (房东). However, visits to the bank, and anything else that requires technical (专业的) language, are still difficult for me.

23、With green mountains and wide beaches — as well as ruins (废墟) from the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans — the island nation of Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean offers a large number of eye-catching places to visit. Here are just a few.
Painted Churches in the Troodos Mountains
The Troodos Mountains, on the southern side of the island, are popular for walker and winter sports fans. But they’re also famous for a group of churches whose inside walls are covered with colorful paintings from as far back as the 11th century. From the outside, the buildings may not look very special, but step inside and almost every stone tells a story of the ancient past.
Ayia Napa
On the east coast, Ayia Napa is the island’s party capital — but that’s not all there is to do. In 2021, the Museum of Underwater Sculpture opened around 200 meters from the beach. Visitors must book with a local diving company in order to see the sculptures, of which there are more than 90. According to artist Jason deCaires Taylor, the idea of the museum is to make people think about the way that humans and nature live together.
Northern Cyprus
The Turkish-speaking northern part of the island — which has called itself an independent state since 1983 — is quieter than the south. But there is lots to see both in the back streets of Girne and Lefkosa — also known as Kyrenia and North Nicosia — as well as the ancient city of Salamis, with its 2,000-year-old outdoor theater.
