21、Many visitors see a trip to Hawaii, Maui in particular, as a destination only reserved for summers. Those who know this, however, love to visit the island in the fall.
The fall season in Maui is quite possibly the best time of year to visit. It is directly in the middle of the two busiest seasons of the year, namely summer and winter. What does that mean for the visitors who choose to plan their vacations during the fall season? Less lines, less crowds, and the chance to communicate with the locals.
Fall in Maui is the best time to head off to Wailea Beach, where the waters are still warm enough to swim even when the air temperature begins to drop. This is also the perfect time for whale watching as the whales begin to migrate during the fall. Visitors can stand on the beach, and still see the whales moving through the water.
The annual Aloha Festivals in Maui also takes place during the fall season. Aloha
Festivals, once called Aloha Week, was created sixty years ago to celebrate the culture of Hawaii. It starts in early September and runs through the end of October. Canoe enthusiasts also head to Maui every year in the fall, to take part in the annual 41-mile canoe race. People can enjoy the festivities and events, even without taking part in the race itself.
For some travelers, there is no better time to see Maui than in the fall.

22、Mr Smith was the manager of a hotel in Springfield. One weekend all of the hotels in the city were full because there was a large meeting. Late in the evening three men came into the hotel and asked for rooms. Mr Smith explained that because of the meeting, there were no rooms ready for use. The men were very unhappy because they had no place to stay in.
Mr Smith wanted to help them. He remembered that Room 414, a very small room, was empty. He asked them if they would share a room. The three men agreed. Mr Smith told them that the room would cost $30: $10 for each. Each of them gave Mr Smith $10, and they went up to the room.
Mr Smith soon began to feel sorry. “Thirty dollars is too much for that small room,” he thought. He called one of his men over and said, “Here is $ 5. Bring it to the man in Room 414. I’ve asked too much money for their room.”
The worker took the money from his manager. While he was on his way to Room 414, he started to think, “How can I divide $5? Well, I’ll give each of them only $1 and I keep $2. The men will be happy to get anything back. I’ll make a little money and Mr Smith will never know.” So he returned $1 to each man.

23、Scientists have found that human eyes are more likely to be damaged by UV rays (紫外线) while skiing in the snow-covered areas than sitting on the beach, according to a report by the UK newspaper The Telegraph.
The researchers at Kanazawa Medical University, Japan and American company Johnson conducted the study together. They looked at the effects of light reflection on newly fallen snow on a ski trail (a rough path) in Ishikawa District, northern Japan. They compared the results with the levels of UV rays on a sand beach in southern Japan’s Okinawa District They found that on the beach, eyes are exposed to a daily 260 kilojoules (千焦耳) of UV a square meter compared to 658 kilojoules in snow-covered areas. The findings are supported by the Japan Meteorological Agency. According to the agency, the reflection rate of UV light on beaches is often between 10 and 25 percent, compared to 80 percent in lie new snow areas. The amount of light increased 4 percent with a 300-meter rise in height.
Most of us know that UV rays can harm the skin. That's why we wear sunscreen on our skin before we .get out in the suit But many of us may not realize that UV rays are also harmful to the eyes.
If your eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time. you may experience a kind of sunburn of the eye, which is harmful. Your eyes will become red and feel a strange feeling. They may be sensitive to light. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and seldom causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies and researches have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases chance of eye damage, which could lead to total blindness.

24、In a time when ivory poaching (偷猎) has gotten so bad that it threatens to wipe out several animal species, a young Dutch designer is creating “egalitarian (平等主义) jewelry^ made of our very own ivory—teeth.
Lucie Majerus got the idea for her “human ivory” collection after having her wisdom teeth removed. She kept them and soon realized they would make great material for a jewelry collection. “Why wouldn’t we value our own material instead of the precious material from other species? And what if we mine our own ivory and turn it into pearls?” she asks.
Her own teeth became a ring, but in order to create a whole collection, she needed more material, and since having more of her teeth removed wasn’t a very pleasant choice, she asked her dentist to save his patient’s unwanted teeth. Most people choose not to keep their pulled teeth, so they are usually donated to dentistry schools. Majerus also received the lost teeth of two of her teachers at Design Academy Eindhoven, so she had a nice supply of human ivory to experiment with.
To turn human teeth into attractive pieces of jewelry, Lucie Majerus first bleaches (漂白) them, and then uses a stone polishing machine to shape the teeth into various shapes.
Majerus displayed her human ivory jewelry collection at this year’s Dutch Design Week, and claims that people’s reaction was mostly positive. “Surprisingly, most people aren’t frightened at the sight of the jewelry, but really like the idea,” Majerus told Fast Co Design. “Some regret that they didn’t keep their tooth at the dentist and some, who will have teeth taken out soon, are now looking forward to it.”
