21、What’s the meaning of “dark horse”? It’s someone who wins when no one expects it.
Han Xiaopeng took China’s first gold on snow. He became an Olympic “dark horse” by winning the gold medal in men’s freestyle aerial skiing(自由式滑雪空中技巧) at Turin in Italy. He made two almost perfect jumps for the highest score. Han had never won a world gold medal before, let alone(更不用说) in the Olympics!
“I never thought this would happen,” said the 23-year-old. “I feel like I’m in a dream.” It’s China’s second gold medal at the Turin Olympics. But more important, Han’s gold was the country’s first ever in a snow sport. In 2002, China’s Yang Yang won the gold for speed skating at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, US.
That Han’s win was unexpected doesn’t mean that he didn’t work hard.
Han grew up in Jiangsu Province. Before he started his training on snow, he used to be an acrobat(杂技演员) at a circus. In 1995, a coach found his talent(才能). The coach, Yang Er’qi, said Han had the agility(灵活性) and courage to be a ski jumper. When Yang first took the 12-year-old to northern China, the boy couldn’t swim, skate or ski. But he wasn’t afraid of the high platform(跳台) and kept on training.
Han almost left the sport after hurting his knee months before the Salt Lake Games. In that Olympics he only got 24th. “I was hopeless at that time, but my family and the coach stood firmly(坚强地) behind me, helping me through,” he recalled.
Han Xiaopeng worked so hard that he won the gold medal in the Olympics at last. Because of his success, more and more people in China are becoming interested in skiing. We are proud of him and we hope he will have another big success in the next winter Olympics.

22、It’s hard to imagine what Earth might look like in 2500. But a co-action between science and art is offering an unsetting window into how ongoing climate change might transform now — familiar land features into foreign landscapes over the following centuries.
These visualizations — of a dried-up Amazon rainforest and some other places — stress why researchers need to push climate predictions long past the habitual 2100, environmental social scientist Christopher Lyon and colleagues argued.
The effects of past and present greenhouse gas emissions will stay for centuries. To visualize what that future world might look like, researchers considered three possible levels — low, medium and high emissions as used in past reports — and predicted changes all the way to 2500.
For all but the lowest-mission assumption, which is roughly in line with limiting global warming to “well under” 2 degrees Celsius relative to preindustrial times as approved by the 2015 Paris Agreement, the average global temperature continues to increase until 2500, the team found. For the highest-emissions temperatures increase by about 2.2 degrees by 2100 and about 4.6 by 2500. That results in “major restructuring of the world’s eco-system”, they say.
The team then co-acted with James McKay, an artist and science communicator at the University of Leeds, to bring the data to life. Based on their predictions, McKay created a series of detailed paintings representing different global landscapes now and in 2500.
The goal of images is to visualize the future in such a way that it feels more urgent, real and close — and, perhaps, to offer a bit of hope that humans can still adapt. “To turn over the trend, we need to think about this problem as a global civilization,” Lyon says. “We wanted to show that, despite the climate people have moved into, people have figured out ways to exist in the climate.”
【1】Why do they conduct the co-actions mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A.To visualize how climate change may shape the future world.
B.To prove the necessity to make climate predictions as far as 2100.
C.To predict the possible land features of the earth in the year of 2500.

A.They abandoned some traditional levels of emissions.
B.They assumed high emissions may reshape the eco-system.
C.They mainly focused on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
D.They got tally different results from those approved by the Paris Agreement.
【3】How did James McKay contribute to the project?

23、 Ready or not, here they come: Scientists who played hide-and-seek with rats found that their furry subjects seemed to love the game- and they were remarkably good at it.
The researchers taught six adolescent male rats how to play a one-on-one version of hide-and-seek. They equipped a large room with cardboard barriers and small containers to serve as hiding places for humans and rats, respectively. The game started when the rat was placed in a small box in the middle of the room. If the rat was the “seeker,” the scientist would hide and then remotely open the box. If the rat was the “hider the scientist would crouch (蹲伏) by the box when the rat came out. This prompted the little rodent to running quickly for cover. All six rats learned how to be the seeker. Five of them were able to handle hiding as well.
Compared with something like playful wrestling, hide-and-seek is more complex for several reasons. It requires an understanding of the rules, a clear grasp of players’ distinct roles and the ability to assume different roles on different rounds. This unconventional experiment sheds light on the sophisticated sense of play in these tiny rodents, and also hints at the evolutionary usefulness of this type of play.
Peggy Mason, a neurobiologist (神经生物学家) at the University of Chicago, said that she was most impressed by the discovery that the rats didn’t just learn hide and seek—they wanted to play it. Play probably helps young animals learn how to socially interact, Mason said. She pointed to evidence that when rodents are prevented from playing during early development, they don’t grow into normal adults. Instead, they become anxious, they don’t play well with others and they aren’t great parents.
【1】What can we know about the experiment?
A.Rats do better than other creatures in hide-and-seek.
B.Rats may enjoy themselves in hide-and-seek.
C.Rats prefer hide-and-seek to other games.
D.Rats may be subject to humans in hide-and-seek.
【2】What may drive the rat to hurriedly hide in the experiment?
A.The scientist’s getting close.
B.Potential danger out of the box.
C.Its sense of safety under the cover.
D.Other rats’ call for help.
【3】Which of the following best describes hide-and-seek?

C.A lack of confidence in their kids.
D.Absence of play in their early life.
24、 The waters around the Galapagos Islands, a hot spot of biodiversity off the coast of Ecuador, have been invaded by more alien species than previously thought.
While the number of invasive species on land is well-documented, relatively little was known about those in the marine environment.
Now field surveys have found 48 invasive species off the coasts of the islands, in addition to five known non-native species. These creatures probably got a free ride on ships from around the world.
These surveys were undertaken only in certain hahitats around two of the larger islands, so the actual number of invasive species is likely to be much greater. “From our knowledge of similar studies, I wouldn’t be surprised if the number was twice as many,” says team member Jim Carlton of Williams College in Massachusetts.
The alien species included worms, mussels crabs and sea squirts. There were also tiny moss(苔藤)animals, such as Amathia verticillata, which kills seagrass and messes up fishing equipment.
Seventeen of the newly-identified invaders had been spotted around the Galapagos Islands before, but bad been wrongly thought to have been native species.
The influence of these alien species on the islands’ ecosystems is not yet known. But it is likely to be damaging judging from experiences elsewhere, and could threaten hundreds of local species on the islands. “What we know is that a number of these invasive species clearly have had serious effects elsewhere in the world,” says Carlton.
Invasions in other places suggest that even more harmful species could soon be headed for the waters of the Galapagos Islands, the team warns, including soft corals(珊瑚虫)that could grow rapidly over local coral, and the possibility of poisonous lionfish crossing from the Caribbean through the Panama Canal.
The Galaparos Marine Reserve is now protected, but it will be hard to stop further invaders because it is difficult to check for tiny species on the bottom of every visiting boat.
【1】How many invasive species have been found off the coasts of the Galapagos Islands?

NEVER STOP WALKING
When Justin was 7, he suffered from a disease that led to problems with the development of his back. Over the years, the little boy had gone through a total of five corrective surgeries. Justin could no longer walk and was limited to a wheelchair. But this did not stop him from living a normal life thanks to his mother’ S love and others’ help.
After entering high school, Justin got interested in playing the trumpet (小号) and joined the school’s band. He served as one of the band’s trumpeters and developed a strong friendship with his partner Tom. As Thanksgiving Day approached, the band intended to perform in the Thanksgiving Day Parade and every member had the chance to join in, including Justin. However, there was one obvious problem. Justin could not control his wheelchair and play the trumpet at the same time. The band director put forward an idea of one student pushing Justin during his marches. Tom immediately volunteered even though it meant he had to give up the opportunity to play his own instrument during the parade.“I do it just to make sure Justin knows that he always has a place in the band, and he always will,“ Tom said to their director secretly. From then on, the two practiced together, one playing the instrument and the other pushing the wheelchair with the rhythm of the music.
To help Justin, Tom sacrificed (牺牲) far beyond expectation. Apart from losing the chance to perform, he needed to spare more time to take care of Justin and even missed his football training several times. All of these were seen by Justin and the burden of guilt weighed heavily on his mind.“I can’t meet my own needs at the sacrifice of Tom’s chance. It is time to find a solution.” Justin thought to himself as his mother pushed him on the way home. His mother lowered her head and said,“Justin, play me your new tune.” Justin took out his trumpet and was about to play when an excellent idea came to him.
