二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Even though vaccination (接种疫苗) is a powerful defense against disease, some voices are against it. In a recent letter, the American Medical Association (AMA) urged big social media including Amazon, Facebook and Google to take action to defend medical science on their platforms.

It said that vaccine-preventable diseases that do harm to the public health like measles (麻疹) are on the rise. Measles cases worldwide jumped more than 30% in 2017 compared to 2016, with the largest increases seen among nations in the Americas, Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Vaccine-preventable diseases are increasing largely because many people are unwilling to get vaccinated. And some of these people even encourage others to refuse vaccination. So this year, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the anti-vaccination movement a top-10 health threat.

“Vaccination is one of the most cost-effective ways of avoiding disease — it currently prevents 2-3 million deaths a year, and a further 15 million could be avoided if global coverage of vaccinations improved,” WHO said.

A research article published in 1998 in a medical journal suggested a link between a vaccine and the development of autism (自闭症) in young children. Although the research has been suspected and many other studies have proved that vaccinations do not cause autism, the article is still impressing people strongly today. Another reason for the growth in the anti-vaccination movement is widespread misinformation on social media, which can turn people against vaccination. If a concerned parent consistently sees information in their Newsfeed that casts doubt on the safety of vaccines, it could cause them to disregard the advice of their children’s physicians and public health experts and refuse to follow the recommended vaccination schedule. So access to true information about vaccine safety is badly needed.

【1】What does the AMA require social media to do on their platforms?

A.Join hands to develop new vaccines.

    B.Introduce life-threatening diseases.

    C.Give up the anti-vaccination movement.

D.Spread the positive effects of vaccination.

【2】Why does the author mention the measles cases in paragraph 2?

A.To stress the danger of measles.

B.To show the result of anti-vaccination.

C.To prove vaccination doesn’t work well.

D.To explain the reason for anti-vaccination.

【3】Which of the following leads to the anti-vaccination phenomenon?

    A.Parents’ concerns over vaccine safety.

    B.The high cost of vaccination.

C.A research relating vaccination to high death rate.

D.Experts’ advice spread on social media.

【4】What is the author’s attitude towards vaccination?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Positive.

    D.Negative.

  • 22、An afternoon nap(午睡)is one of the joys of life, although too much napping could signal all is not well. In some cultures, people will have a daily nap — this is fine. The warning comes when people start sleeping during the daytime, when they did not before. There is certainly a good reason to believe that daytime sleepiness — as in the Alzheimer's study — can be a marker of an underlying condition.

For most people, napping during the day is mainly a sign that you are not getting enough sleep at night, says Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert. "If you feel sleepy during the day, you should think about taking a nap. That is what the body needs — it doesn't need to be kept awake with caffeine, it needs sleep. "The feeling to notice is "sleepiness", he says, not "tiredness", which could be more psychological and linked to stress.

So how do you nap well? The key thing, says Stanley, is how long your nap lasts. Choose either a 20-or 90-minute nap. "When you fall asleep, you'll quickly go through the lighter stages of sleep into your first period of deep sleep. You don't want to wake up in deep sleep because that's when you wake and feel worse than you did before. "Napping for 20 minutes means you will wake up before you go into deep sleep; napping for 90 minutes means you'll complete a sleep cycle.

Once you factor in the time it takes to fall asleep — some people are better at napping than others but, says Stanley, "a healthy adult will fall asleep in between 5 and 12 minutes" — you can set an alarm, allowing a 30- to 40-minute period for a short nap, and up to two hours for a longer one.

A good time to nap is during the body's natural dip in the afternoon, between 2 pm and 4 pm. "You don't really want to be napping much past that because then you are going to be eating into your night-time sleep," Stanley says. The point, he stresses, is to get good night-time sleep, which would ensure you probably don't need to nap at all.

【1】What does an afternoon nap indicate for most people?

    A.Caffeine addiction.

    B.Psychological stress.

    C.Insufficient night sleep.

    D.Potential physical illness.

【2】What is the key to a good nap?

    A.Duration.

    B.Surroundings.

    C.Health.

    D.Stages.

【3】What does the underlined word "that" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.A 30- to 40- minute period.

    B.Between 2 pm and 4 pm.

    C.Between 5 and 12 minutes.

    D.A 20- to 90-minute period.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Why to phase a nap

B.When to take a good nap

C.What to learn from a nap

D.How to have a successful nap

  • 23、Growing up in the Philippines, construction worker Johnny Manlugay combs the beaches each night for the eggs of sea turtles. He knows exactly what to look for,as he was trained as a child by his grandfather on how to locate the animals and their eggs. Back then, his family traded or ate them. It wasn’t about getting rich as much as it was just a part of life.

Manlugay has since turned over a new leaf. Instead,he uses his tracking skills to protect the sea turtles that visit the beaches he lives by.

“I’ve learned to love this work,”Manlugay acknowledged in an interview.“We didn’t know poaching(偷猎)was illegal and that we should not eat turtle eggs and meat.”

Manlugay delicately transferred each egg into a bucket he brought with him,as well as some sand from the turtle nests,to be handed over to Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions(CURMA),the group leading the conservation program on the beaches.

Established in 2009,the CURMA conservation effort has gradually transformed sea turtle poachers into valuable allies(盟友). They manage this by offering training to ultimately save thousands of turtles and keep their eggs from ending up everywhere but their nests.

“We talked to the poachers, and it turned out poaching was just another means for them to earn a living,”explained Carlos Tamayo, the director of operations.“They had no choice.”

On average, sea turtles lay 100 eggs in a nest. The number of nests in the area ranges between 35and 40 each season, which runs from October to February. Tamayo noted that the figures had doubled during the first year of the COVID pandemic.“Last season alone, for example,we had 75 nests and we released close to 9,000 hatching,”he shared.

Once collected, the eggs are then transferred to CURMA’s hatchery(孵化场)to be reburied in protected areas. Another former poacher,Jessie Cabagbag, grew up eating turtle meat and eggs like many people there.“I stopped poaching when we underwent training and were taught that what we have been doing was illegal and that these species of turtles are endangered,”he explained. Now,he admits,“I am truly proud. I am happy that I get to contribute to the conservation of the turtles.”

【1】Why did Johnny Manlugay hunt turtles as a child?

    A.To make a living.

    B.To make a fortune.

    D.To locate them.

    A.To sell them.

    B.To hatch them.

C.To hand them over to a conservation organization.

    B.Close to 9.000.

    C.From 3500 to 4000.

    D.Between 3500 and 10000.
