二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   In the U.S. state of Washington, a road called Interstate 90 cuts through a wild, mountainous area to reach the city of Seattle. For the area's many kinds of animals, the busy highway greatly limits their movements. Crossing 1-90—as the road is called—is a risky but sometimes necessary act. But soon, animals will have a safer choice for crossing the road. They will be able to go above it.

To help the animals, the state is finishing work on its largest-ever wildlife bridge. The 11-meter-tall, 20-meter-wide structure begins in the forest. It forms two arches above the highway, one for each direction of traffic. Workers are adding fencing and plants to help guide the animals across the bridge. Two-meter-thick walls will help block noise from vehicles below.

The 1-90 Bridge is part of a growing number of wildlife crossings across the United States. Some are fences, some are overland bridges, and some are underpasses. They all aim to keep drivers and animals away from each other. Collisions between animals and drivers are rarely deadly to people. But they are often deadly to wildlife. In Canada's Banff National Park, studies have found that wildlife crossings reduce the area's animal-driver collisions by 80 percent.

Most of the wildlife bridges are in western states. But experts have noted many other areas that have a need for such paths. Jen Watkins, whose organization has helped campaign for animal crossings, says ftind for more crossings is "the number-one barrier."

Patty Garvey-Darda of the U.S. Forest Service has worked on the 1-90 crossing from the start of the project. She says the $6- million bridge will one day pay for itself because the highway will not have to be fully or partly closed each time a large animal is struck. She said, 4tIf you shut down Interstate 90, you shut down interstate commerce.”

1What is the purpose of building the bridge over “Interstate 90”?

    A. To reduce human deaths in crash with wildlife.

    B. To prevent wildlife from being struck by vehicles.

    C. To arouse public awareness of wildlife protection.

    D. To provide a safer choice to cross the risky road.

2According to Jen Watkins, what is the biggest challenge in crossing construction?

    A. Finding ways to help guide animals across the bridge.

    B. Collecting money to build more wildlife crossings.

    C. Locating areas to construct appropriate crossings.

    D. Encourage drivers to obey the regulations of traffic.

3What do the underlined words in Paragraph 5 imply?

    A. The bridge will prove to be well worth the high price.

    B. Expense for building such bridges will be reduced.

    C. The bridge will greatly promote trade and commerce.

    D. Lives saved through the bridge are definitely beyond price.

  • 22、Tiffany McDaniel on the ways her mother inspires her literary career

Tiffany McDaniel's mother made her an eager reader, and now she's the subject of her latest novel. In Betty, the author traces her mother's childhood and the Cherokee heritage that defined it. Below, the author tells us her trade secrets, from her earliest attempts to put pen to paper to why it meant so much to write about her own family.

What is the first thing ever that you remember writing?

I've been writing since I was a kid old enough to grasp the pen, so I can't remember the very first thing I ever wrote. But one of those very early books would have been The Big Bad Toothbrush. I wrote it when I was six. It was about two toothbrushes who were twins, one of which was evil. I still have the book on my shelf, and always remember the opening lines, “Once there was a toothbrush I was a mean one, it was.” The evil toothbrush would do things like turn people's teeth black. The story ended with the toothbrush going to toothbrush heaven.

What is the last book that made you cry?

I have a pretty high tolerance level, so I've never cried during a novel, but children's picture books that feature the loss of animals are ones that stay with me like The Day Tiger Rose Said Goodbye And books like The Giving Tree and Donkey, Donkey.

Which book is at the top of your current To-Read list?

I read more non-fiction than I do fiction. Among those to read is a book about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and another book about the birth and final fate of the sun. Science, and planetary science, in particular, is fascinating to me.

Which book made you a forever reader?

Growing up, my mother Betty made sure books and reading were part of our lives. From the time my sisters and I were born, Mom was reading to us. And it became a bedtime habit as we grew older. That's what made me a forever reader. Having had a mother who made sure that from the time we were kids, we understood the importance of story.

What is your favorite part of this Betty?

My favorite part is that it features my mother Betty and her story. I wrote Betty to celebrate the voices of my family, and in particular the voices of the women in my family. This book is a personal journey for me and the generations who have come before me. It's why this book will always cast ripples in my life.

  • 23、   Magazine sales have generally been falling since the day the inventor of the Internet said, “Hey, why don’t I invent the Internet?”

But the latest ABC figures, released this week, show that sales of certain titles are actually going up. News and current affairs magazines are becoming more popular—but celebrity (名人), gossip and fashion publications are still struggling.

“Gossip and celebrity news is rarely something that requires detailed analysis—so it’s best suited to bite-sized content on social media,” says Ian Burrell, media columnist for The Drum. “Once it’s out there, it’s quickly shared and readers move on to the next star. No one wants to wait a week to read about it in a print magazine.”

Fraser Nelson, editor of The Spectator, wrote this week: “There’s now too much writing online, and in an era of fake news, where you get your analysis from has never been more important. As newspapers and magazines are finding out, if you can publish writing that is consistently better than what can be found online, people will pay.”

But many editors are struggling to strike the right balance between physical and digital content. They are faced with the choice of either posting all their articles online for free so the magazine stays relevant, or charging readers money to protect the financial future of the brand.

As Burrell points out, most readers are hungry for a deeper understanding of the fast-moving changes in global news and politics rather than seeking to escape from it by burying their heads in celebrity gossip and entertainment stories.

Serious times call for serious journalism. While general-interest daily news has been turned into an almost universally available commodity (商品) by the Internet, specialist journalism is still a service people value and think they can’t get elsewhere.

【1】What does Ian Burrell think of celebrity news?

    A.It should be read carefully.

    B.It should appear on magazines.

    C.It isn’t worth reading.

    D.It isn’t worth analyzing.

【2】What did Fraser Nelson mainly stress?

A.The value of newspapers and magazines.

    B.The significance of current affairs.

    C.The importance of news sources.

D.The balance between physical and digital content.

【3】What can be inferred from Burrell’s opinion in Paragraph 6?

A.Most readers are fond of rapid changes.

B.Most readers tend to escape from reality.

C.Most readers like entertainment news best.

D.Most readers show great interest in global news and politics.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.What Makes Some Magazines Disappear

B.Where Magazines Will Go in the Future

C.How Magazines Are Surviving the Digital Age

D.Why People Are Still Reading Fashion Publications

  • 24、Using only a computer and a webcam, interactive animations allow learners to animate their world using Scratch and their own movements. We use a tool called video sensing that uses motion picked up from the webcam to start and engage with digital animations on the screen. The result is something not quite real life but fully immersive and imaginative.

    Materials

For this activity, you will need a computer with a webcam and Scratch. That’s it! Consider how your environment or props could enhance your video sensing experience.

Tip: Consistent lighting is very helpful when making more complex video sensing projects.

    Set-up Your Scratch Environment

Click the Add an Extension button at the bottom left-hand corner.

Choose Video Sensing to add video blocks.

Go back to the Scratch editor. Now there are additional video sensing blocks and the webcam is turned on.

    Test Your Set-up

Make your first video sensing project with just two blocks. Start with the when video motion block to start your animation. The number inside this block can be between 1 and 100. A value of 1 is very sensitive to movement and a value of 100 is not very sensitive.

When movement is detected through the webcam, what happens next is up to you. Choose a sound, movement, or other reaction to create an interactive story.

    Video Transparency

You may notice that when the video camera in Scratch turns on, your video will look faded. To add more saturation to your video, change the   value from 50 to 100.

Once your environment is set-up, you’re ready to start interacting directly with your Scratch sprites (动画卡通人物)!Projects can be as varied as your learners' interests, support them in finding a project that’s meaningful to them. As one example, learners can use video sensing in Scratch to bring a book to life!

【1】If Tom wants to make a personalized and complex video sensing project, he should take into account the following factors EXCEPT ______.

    A.environment or props

    B.consistent lighting

    C.multiple sprites

    D.his own interest

【2】Which of the following statements about video sensing is true?

A.The When Video Motion block starts when it senses motion.

B.It is a tool to capture motion from the webcam.

C.Learners can use it to create animations based on their own movements.

D.With the When Video Motion block, users can adjust video transparency.

【3】Which title best describes the project mentioned in the passage?

    A.Digital Bling (闪亮的衣物)

    B.Two Frame Animation

    C.Scribbling (涂鸦)Machines

    D.Animate Your World
