  • 21、Scientists are making new studies of color and its effects on our health. They have known for a long time that the color of a room or the color of the light in it can affect our feelings and emotions. Many prisons and hospitals have at least one room that is painted pink. Officials have found that light and color can produce physical changes in our bodies.

Professor Falfan worked with a group of 9 disabled children at school in Albert. Two of the children were blind. The other seven had normal sight. The scientists changed the color of the school room, and then looked for changes in blood pressure, heart beat and breathing rate. The effects of color changes were the same for the blind children as for those with normal sight. Their blood pressure dropped from about 120 to 100. Similar changes were reported in heart-beat and the breathing. The children were also calmer and less excited. Then the colors of the room were returned to orange and white. Blood pressure, heart-beat and breathing rate went up and the children became excited again.

Professor Falfan said different colors produce different levels of light energy. He said the differences seem to affect chemicals in the brain that carry messages from nerve to nerve and from nerve to muscle.

  • 22、   We think of winter as cold and flu season, but the cold temperatures have powerful biological upsides too.

    Boosts your brain

【1】 .Studies have found that people perform some cognitive(认知的)tasks like making decisions better when the temperature is cooler. Research has also shown that people are less willing to handle complex tasks in the summer than in the winter.

    Burns calories(卡路里)

When it's cold, your body works harder to keep your core temperature, which is typically. about 98.6 degrees. "Our bodies use a considerable amount of energy to keep us warm and to dampen the air we breathe when we're out in the cold,"explains Stacy Tucker,an expert from Kansas City. 【2】  . A recent study showed that participants burned 34 percent more calories when they hiked in 14-to 23-degree temperatures than they did hiking on 50-degree days.

    Activates healthy fat

We know accumulating too much ordinary fat or "white fat" can endanger our health. But adults also have small amounts of beneficial "brown fat" that can quicken their metabolism(新陈代谢)and bum more calories 【3】 .

    Encourages better sleep

Your body's core temperature drops when you're trying to sleep. 【4】,but it's much faster in winter, says Tucker. Plus, with darker mornings, you naturally sleep later.

    【5】

Yes,you might get more colds during the winter. However, studies have shown that the immune system can be activated by colder temperatures, which improves our ability to fight infections, explains Tucker. That said, the flu virus becomes strong in cold, dry air,and time spent indoors increases your chance of infection. To reduce risk, get your annual flu shot, wash your hands frequently, and go outside.

    A. Fights infections

    B. So fasten your boots

    C. Suffers from infections

    D. Colder temperatures can help you think more clearly

    E. And cold temperatures can activate this useful fat

    F. Exercising in the winter makes heart muscles stronger

    G. This process can take up to two hours in the summer

  • 23、   Reducing, reusing, and recycling is a way of life in Sweden. Recycling is required by law and garbage is sorted at home before if goes to a recycling center. Recyclables are sorted into seven categories and recycling stations are within just 300 meters of all residential areas. " Recycling almost everything is a must in Sweden now. It actually feels very uncomfortable when you visit another country and cant find easy ways to recycle, " said Owen Gaffney, an expert at Stockholm Resilience Centre and Future Earth.

But not all of its garbage is recycled. Sweden uses alternatives that include incineratinggarbage to make electricity instead of using fossil fuels(化石燃料)to heat 1.2 million homes. About half of household garbage  is sent to one of the 33 wastetoheat plants. Sweden is importing garbage from other countries to keep these plants running. Sweden is also a world leader in turning food waste into ecofriendly biogas(沼气). It has made food waste collection compulsory beginning in 2021. There is a food waste biogas plant, which allows biogas to be used to run public buses and to heat apartment buildings.

Sweden now wants to deal with those remaining items that cannot be recycled by using a circular(循环论证的)economy approach. It means that products can be reused and only recycled when absolutely necessary. The Swedish government formed an advisory group to find a way of making this part of its environmental policy.

This will not work effectively unless people are taught to change their behavior. Now the government is reforming its tax code so that people could get cheaper repairs or buy used things. The large Swedish clothing retailer(零售商)H&M operates a recycling program that gives customers discounts when they bring back old clothing.

Sweden is fighting climate change by doing all the right stuff. Waste recycling and the plans to switch to a circular economy will go a long way in reducing its carbon footprint and will help stop global warming.

1What do we know about Sweden

A.Sweden imports household garbage for biogas.

B.It is convenient to recycle things in Sweden.

C.Half of garbage in Sweden is used to produce heat.

D.Everything is recycled after being used in Sweden.

2What does the underlined word in paragraph 2 mean

    A.Burning.

    B.Treating.

    C.Throwing.

    D.Reusing.

3What does the advisory group do

A.Teach people how to save fossil fuels.

B.Conduct a survey about the local economy.

    C.Offer advice on environmental policy.

D.Make sure the citizens recycle wisely.

4How does the government encourage its citizens to reuse

    A.It provides various recycling programs.

B.It cuts down taxes on new products.

C.It gives discounts to regular buyers.

D.It offers lower prices for repairs.

  • 24、   What if I told you there was something that would have an immediate and positive benefit for your brain? Would you do it? Yes!

1Simply moving your body has immediate, long-lasting and protective benefits for your brain. There are two key areas in our brains- prefrontal cortex(前额皮质)important for attention and hippocampus(海马结构)for long-term memories. I went to the documentary to find the effects of exercise on the brain- better feeling, better energy, better memory and better attention. Now I’ve come to a conclusion that exercise is the amazing thing. 2

First of all, it has immediate effects on your brain. A single workout immediately increase levels of dopamine(多巴胺). That is going to increase your feelings right after that workout.

What’s more, after long-term exercise, you not only get better focus and attention, but the volume of the hippocampus increases as well.3So you get long-lasting increases in dopamine.

Last, the amazing thing that exercise will do is its protective effects on your brain.4The more you’re working out, the bigger and stronger your muscle becomes. So do your hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

Bringing exercise in your life will not just give you a happier, more protective life today.5And in this way it will change the path of your life for the better.

A.Here you can think about the brain like a muscle.

B.It will also protect your brain from severe diseases.

C.So I've gone from memory pioneer to exercise explorer.

D.I am talking about the powerful effects of physical activity.

E.A single workout can improve your ability to focus attention.

F.You can do it for your brain today for the following three reasons.

G.You get immediate effects of feelings and those last for a long time.
