二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I am a taxi driver. One Monday morning, I had stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited until he jumped into the taxi. “La Guardia Airport, please,” he said.

As always, I wondered about my passenger. “What do you do?” “I am working at the hospital.” For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help.

“Could I ask a favor of you?” He didn’t answer. “I have a son, 16. He’s doing well in school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job?” After a minute, he said, “The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records.” He searched his pocket and handed me a card.

That evening, I pulled the card from my pocket. “Robbie,” I said proudly, “This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records.” He read it out loud, “Fred Plum, New York Hospital.” “Is this a joke?” he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened (恐吓) to cut off his pocket-money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning.

Two weeks later, when I arrived home, my son handed me a letter from Plum. He was to phone Plum’s secretary for an interview.

Robbie got the job. The white coat he wore made him feel more important than he really was. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation (推荐) for universities. At last, Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College.

It never happened to me that a stranger should change my son’s future.

1The author threatened to cut off Robbie’s pocket-money probably because _________.

    A.he was tired after a day’s work. B.he didn’t earn enough money.

C.Robbie was unwilling to work. D.Robbie didn’t believe what he said.

2It can be inferred from the passage that Plum is _________.

A.patient and selfless. B.generous and careful.

C.kind and helpful. D.wealthy and handsome.

3What message does the passage want to tell us?

A.A stranger may change your life.

B.One must be friendly to strangers.

C.A father should be responsible for his son.

D.Doctors may have a great effect on people.

  • 22、Museums can be overwhelming. With thousands of pieces there, how do you know which to focus on? And once you see a piece you like, how do you interact with it? Here is some advice on how to have a meaningful connection when you look at art.

Get up close and personal.【1】 Therefore, take your time to observe qualities about a work that may not come through on a computer screen. That includes its look and the feel of its surface, the marks made by the brush and the path your eyes take when viewing the work.

Stand back. Next, take a few steps back, stand in the center — and observe what’s happening in the big picture. What’s going on in the piece? 【2】 What are they doing? How are they related?

Look at it from an angle. Then try looking at an artwork from its sides, because you might catch something you might not have seen straight on. If it’s something like The Ambassadors by Holbein at The National Gallery in London, if you stand to the side, you’ll see something that from front on looks very different. 【3】 That’s called anamorphic art.

Move your body. If you’re looking at a painting, you can take a finger to the air and trace the outline of the figure or the movement of the brushstrokes. 【4】 This can help you see and feel what it might be like to make this artwork from the artist’s perspective.

Consider the subject of the art. That can have a profound effect on how you feel about the work-and perhaps you can learn something from it. Take the example of Andrew Wyeth’s famous painting, Christina’s World, which depicts (描绘) a girl with a muscle disease crawling across a field to get to her home in the distance. The painting personifies (体现) determination.【5】

A.So just keep an open mind.

    B.What have they gone through?

C.When you stand to the side, it changes.

D.How are the figures in the piece arranged?

E.We have the luxury of seeing the real thing at a museum.

F.When looking at sculptures, try the poses with your body.

G.It can in a way relieve your stress to know we have this inner strength.

  • 23、   In the far future, robots live on Earth as humans but the population of humans is smaller than a thousand. This is a story of a repair robot R-62.

One day, a car came to the repair factory and a human stepped out of the car.

“Wow, a human! I have never seen a real one,” said R-62.

“Humans are quite clever. They’re able to do any action they want to. They’re even able to harm other human beings or organize wars, which they have been doing a lot in the history. Also they don’t even have to follow orders if they don’t want to,” said another robot T-59 quietly to R-62.

“How terrible it is! And almost all robots seem afraid of him and don’t look at him directly,” said R-62.

The human then sat down and asked if there had been any problems in the last 10 years and he only got a quick answer, “No, sir.”

Then suddenly, R-62 said loudly, “I have one question for you.”

The human said, “Yes”, a bit unhappy for not getting “sir”.

“Why do human create so many robots?” asked R-62.

Silence followed the question and he then said, “I don’t need to answer questions from robots!” He then went into his car and drove away quickly.

“I really don’t understand why humans replaced (取代)themselves with robots,” asked R-62.

“Because they thought that robots were more advanced(先进的) than humans. They created us to support themselves,” answered T-59.

“But there are so few humans on Earth. What they should do is take away the robots or at least make them stop doing the work which humans are supposed to do,” said R-62.

“I agree. But we can do nothing about it. And now we have to finish repairing this car,” said T-59.

    “All right, let’s continue.”

    【1】In T-59’s opinion, humans are ________.

    A.stupid

    B.polite

    C.dangerous

    D.smart

    【2】According to the text, R-62 __________.

A.dared not look at the human directly

B.decided to give up its job

C.was not friendly to the human

    D.hope to live on Earth

【3】What can we learn from the story?

A.R-62 doesn’t know what human beings look like.

B.T-59 knows a lot about human beings.

C.T-59 doesn’t want to support human beings.

D.R-62 and T-59 are brothers and do different jobs.

【4】What’s R-62’s attitude towards humans’ creating robots?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Excited.

    C.Frightened.

    D.Supportive.

  • 24、Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others, it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues(独白)as: “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleiman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract(打破)your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours.

1If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.

    A. he is a lazy person

    B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle

    C. he is not sure when his energy is low

    D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening

2You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ________.

    A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work

    B. help you to control your temper early in the day

    C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work

    D. keep your energy cycle under control all day

3What should one do if he wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning?

    A. He should change his energy cycle.

    B. He should overcome his laziness.

    C. He should get up earlier than usual.

    D. He should go to bed earlier.
