  • 21、WHEN KIM JI-UN lived in Seoul, she worried about finding a good job. Now, she is worried that drought may ruin her crop. The 23-year-old started a farm last year. Her first harvest was a success; she was surprised that her black beans did better than her strawberries.

Ms Kim is part of a phenomenon called kwichon, or returning to rural life. Created a millennium ago, kwichon appears during periods of economic hardship. This time, in the wake of the pandemic, many new farmers have never lived in the countryside before. By planting young farmers in rural areas, the government hopes to enjoy big rewards in future.

The plan is working. In 2021 nearly 380, 000 people moved to the countryside. Comfort with digital technology gives young farmers a leg up, says Cho Kyung-ik, the director of the Beginning Farmer’s Centre, an institution educating those who wish to kwichon at its downtown offices. They sell fresh produce on Naver, South Korea’s largest search engine.

The centre teaches techniques like how to use a tractor or select the best crops. It arranges a trial period during which ambitious farmers work under the guidance of an old hand, learning what it means to do back-breaking labour from dawn to dusk.

The most important lesson is how to get on with the locals. The villagers are also offered tips on how to act towards the newcomers. That part is not yet a total success. Ms Kim says her neighbors have a bad temper. “The old people come in here and give me unwanted advice, or say that I will never be able to grow anything,” she says. Her black beans beg to differ. She and the South Korean government will be hoping that her crops put the argument to rest for good.

【1】Why does the writer tell Ms Kim’s story?

    A.To explain a solution.

    B.To introduce a topic.

    C.To start a discussion.

    D.To make a comparison.

【2】What does the underlined “a leg up” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.A helping hand.

    B.A new identity.

    C.A big reward.

    D.A different idea.

【3】What is the challenge for the young farmers?

    A.Farming techniques.

    B.Hard work.

    C.Communicative skills.

    D.Unwanted advice.

【4】What can we infer from kwichon in South Korea?

    A.Farming makes huge profits.

    B.Locals need technical training.

C.It helps to bring rural areas back to life.

    D.Government should help farmers.

  • 22、Technology is creating big changes in the music industry. Music lovers listen to and buy music on the Internet. They can watch live concerts of favorite artists online. And music makers, as well as music industry officials, use social media(媒体) to reach an increase public interest.

Nick Sherwin is the founder of the band called Suburban Skies. He says today’s technology permits a band to control its own future. He said, “Social media is a wonderful thing. You can make use of it to reach the public.” Sherwin says the Internet and social media have created possibilities for musicians. He says the new way to success is to give visitors more than one type of experience. “The most important thing is the content. You have to have songs and videos to show the audience. But I think it is extremely important to do shows, to build your brand, and to make you well known, Sherwin said.

Music industry officials discussed the future of the business during an international conference in Los Angeles, California. They said musicians are choosing to perform live across the country, following the drop in CD sales in the Unites States. Rob Light is head of music with a creative artists agency. He said, “Most of the income for artists is now coming from the live marketplace.”

Along with the popularity of live music there has been a big increase in the number of music festivals. These events are advertised on social media. Pasquale Rotella leads Insomniac, a company that produces electronic dance music festivals in several countries. “Someone could make it in their bedroom and put it out there. People can gain fans online without anyone’s help. That has completely helped the growth of dance music. said Rotella.

Bob Pittman leads the radio organization Clear Channel Communication. He says music lovers are still listening to the radio, although there are new ways of finding music. He says 70 percent of Americans say they discover new music from what they hear on the radio. But Rob Light says radio will soon be a thing of the past. However, Nick Sherwin is not worried. He just wants to reach everyone who likes his style of music with the help of the Internet.

【1】From Paragraph 2, we learn that Nick Sherwin ______.

    A. doesn’t have any good ways to reach the public.

    B. doesn’t believe his band has good content to draw attention.

    C. thinks social media can help make his band’s music well known.

    D. thinks everyone can become famous through making good use of the Internet.

【2】What Pasquale Rotella said in Paragraph 4 shows that ______.

    A. dance music has finally become popular.

    B. there is too much music for people nowadays.

    C. electronic dance music festivals are easy to hold.

    D. people can make their music heard easily nowadays.

【3】According to Bob Pittman, radio ______.

    A. will be out of date quite soon.

    B. is no longer listened to today.

    C. will always be loved by some people.

    D. is the best tool to introduce new songs.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. People prefer to listen to music online nowadays.

    B. Technology is greatly changing the music industry.

    C. The number of live concerts has greatly increased.

    D. CD sales in the United States have greatly dropped.

  • 23、   Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

    London

Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s, London’s Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework (烟花) that knows how to see in the year with a bang. Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also famous for its gold dealers, and there are lots of gold shops along the road.

    Mauritius

Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation’s rich multicultural diversity. Built in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors. • 24、   Rome is recognized across the globe for its classical artwork, but recently the city's street art has been drawing attention. While many urban artists stick to painting murals(壁画),one Italian sculptor is resisting the trend with his wonderful works made from an unusual material. Andrea Gandini, a native of Rome in his early twenties, has been recognized for his wood carvings of old tree trunks scattered across the city's landscape.

Gandini's Trocomorto, or "dead trunk" project, began in 2018, when the artist ran out of sculpting clay. That's when he noticed the remains of an old tree stump in his neighborhood. He realized that Rome was full of potential canvases(画布)just waiting to be given a new life. "Bringing trees back to life" is exactly how Gandini and others describe his art.

Due to years of poor care by the city, many trees became diseased and had to be cut down. This resulted in lots of old stumps that degraded the streets of Rome, which were costly to remove. However, they have been a perfect canvas of Gandini, who has completed over 50 carvings across the city.

Gandini gives each old tree trunk a face and personality of its own. By recognizing each formerly living tree as individual, he hopes to give them some dignity in death and respect each of them with their own headstone of sorts. For those that can't make the trip to Rome, Gandini documents his works of art on Facebook.

Gandini's “dead trunk" project reminds us of what Auguste Rodin says, "There is no lack of beauty in the world, but a lack of eyes to find it." All is beautiful in the eyes of the artist, for his keen eye sees through the heart of all living things. To discover its character is to pierce its outer form and touch its inner truth. This "truth" is also "beauty".

1What has drawn people's attention recently in Rome according to the passage?

A.Its classical artwork. B.Its traditional murals.

C.Its street wood carvings. D.Its unusual material.

2Which statement is NOT correct about Gandini's works?

A.They are full of life. B.They follow the trend of murals.

C.They beautify the city. D.They are appreciated by some artists.

3What does Gandini try to put in his works?

A.Dignity and respect. B.Beauty and kindness.

C.Hope and personality. D.Death and art.

4What can we learn from this passage?

A.Beauty is always around for keen eyes.

B.Inner truth is difficult to find.

C.We live in a world lacking beauty.

D.Grandini is a person who loves nature and truth.
