二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   I was in the middle of the Amazon (亚马逊) with my wife, who was there as a medical researcher. We flew on a small plane to a faraway village. We did not speak the local language, did not know the customs, and more often than not, did not entirely recognize the food. We could not have felt more foreign.

We were raised on books and computers, highways and cell phones, but now we were living in a village without running water or electricity It was easy for us to go to sleep at the end of the day feeling a little misunderstood.

Then one perfect Amazonian evening, with monkeys calling from beyond the village green, we played soccer. I am not good at soccer, but that evening it was wonderful. Everyone knew the rules. We all spoke the same language of passes and shots. We understood one another perfectly. As darkness came over the field and the match ended, the goal keeper, Juan, walked over to me and said in a matter-of-fact way, “In your home, do you have a moon too?” I was surprised.

After I explained to Juan that yes, we did have a moon and yes, it was very similar to his, I felt a sort of awe (敬畏) at the possibilities that existed in his world. In Juan’s world, each village could have its own moon. In Juan’s world, the unknown and undiscovered was vast and marvelous. Anything was possible.

In our society, we know that Earth has only one moon. We have looked at our planet from every angle and found all of the wildest things left to find. I can, from my computer at home, pull up satellite images of Juan’s village. There are no more continents and no more moons to search for, little left to discover. At least it seems that way.

Yet, as I thought about Juan’s question, I was not sure how much more we could really rule out. I am, in part, an ant biologist, so my thoughts turned to what we know about insect life and I knew that much in the world of insects remains unknown. How much, though? How ignorant (无知的) are we? The question of what we know and do not know constantly bothered me.

I began collecting newspaper articles about new species, new monkey, new spider…, and on and on they appear. My drawer quickly filled. I began a second drawer for more general discoveries: new cave system discovered with dozens of nameless species, four hundred species of bacteria found in the human stomach. The second drawer began to fill and as it did I wondered whether there were bigger discoveries out there, not just species, but life that depends on things thought to be useless, life even without DNA. I started a third drawer for these big discoveries. It fills more slowly, but all the same, it fills.

In looking into the stories of biological discovery, I also began to find something else, a collection of scientists, usually brilliant occasionally half-mad, who made the discoveries. Those scientists very often see the same things that other scientists see, but they pay more attention to them, and they focus on them to the point of exhaustion (穷尽), and at the risk of the ridicule of their peers. In looking for the stories of discovery, I found the stories of these people and how their lives changed our view of the world.

We are repeatedly willing to imagine we have found most of what is left to discover. We used to think that insects were the smallest organisms (生物), and that nothing lived deeper than six hundred meters. Yet, when something new turns up, more often than not, we do not even know its name.

1What made that Amazonian evening wonderful?

A.He learned more about the local language.

B.They had a nice conversation with each other.

C.They understood each other while playing.

D.He won the soccer game with the goal keeper.

2Why was the author surprised at Juan’s question about the moon?

    A.The question was too straightforward.

B.Juan knew so little about the world.

C.The author didn’t know how to answer.

D.The author didn’t think Juan was sincere.

3What was the author’s initial purpose of collecting newspaper articles?

A.To sort out what we have known.

B.To deepen his research into Amazonians.

C.To improve his reputation as a biologist.

D.To learn more about local cultures.

4How did those brilliant scientists make great discoveries?

    A.They shifted their viewpoints frequently.

    B.They followed other scientists closely.

C.They often criticized their fellow scientists.

D.They conducted in-depth and close studies.

  • 22、   The giraffe is the tallest animal on land. It is one of the best-known species in Africa, known for their very long necks, long legs and the brown and white patterns that cover their bodies.

Craig Hilton-taylor is head of the Red List program. He says there were between 152,000 and 163, 000 giraffes in 1985. But now, the number of them has fallen to about 98 , 000. “It is a huge tragedy and it's been sort of a silent disappearance that we just really haven't detected until now." Fifty years ago, groups of giraffes usually had 20 to 30 animals in them. Now, observers are only seeing six animals in a group. Until now the disappearance of the animals has not been observed closely. They live in such a wide area across Africa.

What is causing this decrease? Hilton-taylor says, “It is due to the effect of people, whether it's people causing loss of habitat for the species, hunting the species for food or harvesting for medicine or for wood. ”

He says pollution and the effects of climate change are just a few of the other problems affecting the species. Some people are moving into protected areas where giraffes and other animals live because of a lack of rain that affects food production. Sometimes the animals are killed for their meat. Also, civil wars in Africa make it more difficult to protect the animals.

Hilton-taylor says giraffes can be helped. “It's not too late, and we can turn things around. ” Some of the ideas that work include community involvement and tourism. Tourism, for example, provides jobs for local people. He also says there needs to be a giraffe action plan put in place to observe and survey the animals across the continent of Africa. Hilton-taylor adds that finding answers to the problems people face, like drought linked to climate change, food shortages and civil unrest, will provide answers for people to help giraffes.

1What does the underlined word “detected" mean in the second paragraph?

    A.changed B.noticed C.doubted D.confirmed

2Which is NOT a possible reason for the decrease of giraffes?

A.Civil wars in Africa. B.Loss of the habitats.

C.Climate change. D.Their wide living space.

3How can giraffes be helped according to Hilton-taylor?

A.By attracting more tourists to Africa. B.By stopping the global warming.

C.By learning more about the community. D.By moving local people away.

4Which might be the most suitable title for the passage?

A.Giraffes are changing Africa. B.Silent disappearance of giraffes.

C.Tourism and nature protection. D.Wildlife can be saved in future.

  • 23、Have you ever made a promise to yourself that you didn’t keep? Commonly, when the new year ticks over, we make decisions: going to the gym, studying harder or giving up a bad habit. Sadly, not long after we’ve made the promise, we often end up breaking them. 【1】? Well, it’s possible, but willpower might not be the only thing you need.

The basic idea of a habit is something we do almost unawarely, as if you’re on autopilot (习惯性地做). 【2】. Good habits can be part of your daily routine. But if we don’t have those habits, how can we create them? According to a psychological study, it takes an average of 66 days to form a new habit. 【3】.

Then, the key is to question why you want something to be the norm (常态) . Do you want to lose weight because you want to be healthier or feel more attractive? 【4】. A bad mood may mean you don’t want to do something.

【5】. Remember that it’s a case of baby steps. Giving up all your favourite foods, going to the gym, and stopping drinking at the same time will probably result in failure rather than sustainable practice. And don’t worry about failing-just start again!

It might not be quick, but if you follow these tips, you may be able to change something for the better or kick a bad habit.

A.How long did it take to form a new good habit?

B.However, relying only on determination may not be the answer.

C.An example of this would be having breakfast or saying “please” and “thank you”.

D.You should also avoid trying to change too much at once.

E.Don’t do things outside your comfort zone.

F.The issue is, willpower could be easily affected by your mood.

G.What if you want to create a new good habit?

  • 24、A team of researchers at Harvard University and Emory University have created a school of robotic fish. They can swim by recreating the contractions (收缩) of a pumping heart. Researchers say the experiment could advance pacemaker (心脏起搏器) technology and improve the development of artificial hearts for humans.

Researchers built the zebrafish-based fish using paper, gelatin (明胶), plastic fin, and two layers of human heart muscle cells. One ran along the robot’s left side, while the other along the right. When the muscle cells on one side contracted, the tail moved in that direction. This allowed the fish to swim in the water. The opposite side’s muscle cell layer similarly stretched as a result of the action. This stretching then sent a signal to the cells, causing them to contract, which kept the swimming motion going. The researchers also created an autonomous pacing node (节点), similar to a pacemaker, which controls the frequency and rhythm of these contractions.

The fish moved autonomously for over 108 days, equal to 38 million beats, the study stated. “Because heart cells constantly rebuild themselves, which takes about 20 days, the fish cells rebuild themselves about five times,” says Kit Parker, a professor from Harvard University who led the research. The fish eventually reached speeds and swimming efficiency comparable to wild zebrafish.

“Though the researchers say the fish is a step forward for heart research, it could be years before it leads to the creation of an artificial heart,” says Michael Schneider, a professor at Imperial College London, who wasn’t involved in the study. But that doesn’t dishearten Parker. “I think other methods will be faster than us,” says Parker. “But in the long run, creating tissue that relies on the patient’s own cells could offer unexpected benefits.”

【1】What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

A.Why the robotic fish was created.

B.What enabled the robotic fish to swim.

C.Who got involved in the experiment.

D.How fast the robotic fish could swim.

【2】Which is true about the robotic fish according to Paragraph 3?

A.They were rebuilt by human doctors.

B.They didn’t move as Parker expected.

C.They finally swam as fast as wild zebrafish.

D.They grew into the size of wild zebrafish.

【3】What does the underlined word “dishearten” mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Discourage.

    B.Surprise.

    C.Amuse.

    D.Relieve.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.The findings may aid in heart research.

B.The first artificial hearts have been created.

C.Parker got no support from other scientists.

D.The researchers were upset about the findings.

  • 26、DirectionsRead the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

What I think of boxing as a sport

Boxing is a popular sport that many people seem to be fascinated by. Newspapers, magazines and sports programmes on TV frequently cover boxing matches. Professional boxers earn a lot of money, and successful boxers are treated as big heroes.

It seems to me that some people, especially men, find it appealing because it is an aggressive sport. When they watch a boxing match, they can identify with the winning boxer, and this gives them the feeling of being a winner themselves. Sometimes fans are rooting for a particular boxer, moreover because the boxer comes from their own country, and if“their”boxer loses, they often feel as if they have lost a fight themselves. It is a fact that many people have feeling of aggression from time to time, but they cannot show their aggression in their everyday lives. Watching a boxing match gives them an outlet for this aggression.

However , there is a negative side to boxing. It can be a very dangerous sport. Although boxers wear gloves during the fights, and amateur boxing even have to wear helmets, there have frequently been accident in both professional and amateur boxing, sometimes with dramatic consequences. Boxers have suffered from head injuries, and occasionally, fighters have even been killed as a result of being knocked out in the ring. For example, studies have shown that there are often long-term effects of boxing, in the form of serious brain damage, even if a boxer has never been knocked out.

To conclude, I am personally not at all in favour of aggressive sports like boxing. I think it would be better if less time was given to aggressive sports on TV, and we celebrated more men and women from non-aggressive sports as our heroes and heroines in our society. I believe that the world is aggressive enough already! Of course, people like competitive sports , and so do I, but I think that hitting other people in an aggressive way is not something that should be regarded as a sport.
