二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、As an open-minded parent of a 7-year-old boy,I find out that “yes” is the word I say most frequently in life.I do this because “yes” is a sign of positive living.Saying “yes” means opening myself up to new experiences and inviting new or deeper relationships. However, too much “yes” may leave any one of us feeling powerless to set and keep boundaries(界限) in our lives.

This had been on my mind when The Book of No came across my desk. The book is rich, readable and useful to people who have difficulty in saying “no”.

Susan Newman, the writer of the book, calls people who keep saying “yes” through life “people-pleasers”.Those people often hold long-term expectations that they will care for others and feel sorry to even speak out their own needs when a request comes their way.For people-pleasers,saying “yes” is the way to avoid breaking their relationship with the asker.

So how can we say “no”?The Book of No offers short and simple dialogues for hundreds of situations in which “no” is the right answer. After reading the book,I realised the things that started helping me improve my “no” skills.

For one thing, the “no” dialogues seldom include “I’m sorry” language.Instead, they are simple and clear sentences like “No,I don’t want to go” or “Not without everyone’s help”.I also noticed the sentences generally don’t ask us to say “I can’t”.Instead, they say “I prefer not to...”,“I’m not in a position(职位) to...”,or “It won’t work for me to...”.These expressions pay more attention to the person’s needs, not to his ability to respond(回应) to a request.

Do you think this book might be helpful to you? It’s OK if the answer is “no”,but I do highly suggest it for your Positive Reading List shelf.

  • 22、They supposedly swim in remote lakes, hide in dense forests, and walk among snowy mountains. Yet despite being unreal proven by science, cryptids—fantastical beasts that probably don’t exist—have fascinated humans for centuries and gave birth to cryptotourism which boosts the local tourism. North America’s Bigfoot helps generate over $140 million annually for the U.S. economy, according to the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.

In Nepal, cryptotourism reaches back to the 1950s. It centers on the Yeti. Up to six feet tall and similar in appearance to the Bigfoot, this legendary creature is reported to wander on the snowy peaks of the Himalayas and is a prominent figure in the folk tale of Nepal. Its tale is 6,000 years old. But the furry beast was a regional fairytale until British explorer Eric Shipton claimed to have photographed a 13-inch-long human-like footprint in the snow of Nepal’s Menlung Glacier. Explorers all over the world soon flooded into the Himalayas, competing to detect the cryptid.

Over time, the Yeti became a powerful tourism brand in Nepal. This beast’s foot forms the logo of the domestic carrier, Yeti Airlines, while hotels, restaurants, cafés, and tour companies profit off its name.

Some Nepalis are more skeptical. Sushil, a tour guide, says even as a child he viewed Yetis as a sham. Now, when his customers ask about the monster, he tells them it’s widely considered a myth. Sushil says he dislikes cryptotourism, which steals focus from the country’s remarkable architecture and ancient traditions. “I don’t think the Yeti is a valuable tool to promote Nepal tourism,” he says. “We have a lot of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Nepal should focus on its rich natural diversity.”

Academics have also offered scientific explanations for the Yeti and other cryptids, yet these legends persist. “People have always been fascinated by things in nature which confuse us, things which we just don’t understand,” says Panday, a Nepali author. “That’s not going to change any time soon.”

B.It was proven by Eric Shipton.

D.It plays a vital part in Nepali tourism.

【3】What may Sushil recommend to tourists?

    A.The local natural diets.

    B.The legends about monsters.

    C.The Nepali cultural heritage.

    D.The tourist draws featuring Yetis.

【4】What does Panday think of cryptotourism?

A.It has good reason to exist.

    B.It keeps pace with science.

    C.It benefits Nepali economy.

    D.It promotes animal protection.

  • 23、Recovering strength and movement after an injury often involves physical therapy(治疗).Physical therapists help patients with brain or bone injuries regain control of their muscles. Exercising muscles plays an important part in the rehabilitation(康复)process. Therapists use balls and boards to improve balance, tretchy bands to increase strength and other exercise.

But a Polish technology company Egzotech has developed a robot called Luna, to make exercise interactive. Luna can help therapists choose the best exercise for their patients. The robot also provides therapists with information about their patients' progress.

Luna uses electromyography, or EMG, to identify electrical currents as patients bend their arms or legs.Michal Mikulski is the chief executive officer of Egzotech. He says detecting muscle tension not immediately visible to the human eye can help therapists design better exercise.

“We reach a certain stage of disease development when the muscle tension is not even visible. But these signals can still be seen on our machines .Luna is still able to detect them. And based on that, when the brain sends a signal to the muscle to flex, even though we don't see it, Luna is still able to detect it. It detects these signals and causes the movement of the limb(肢),as if it were performed naturally."

Luna can also make therapy fun for children who often get bored with repeated movements. Luna permits them to play games without knowing that they are exercising their muscles.

“Sometimes it is a spacecraft, sometimes shooting balls, sometimes flying a dragon. In any case, a child wants to win a game, wants to compete, but in fact they are exercising."

Luna is just a protorype(原型).But Egzotech expects to have other robots ready for sale later this year.

A.It can make exercise interesting and effective.

B.It makes them win more awards in competitions.

C.It makes children get more achievements with less time.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.How Luna works.

    B.How patients fight injuries.

    D.How therspists help patients.

  • 24、On the night of November 14, 1978, a six-year-old Korean boy was flying to the United States. All he knew was that he was on a plane heading for somewhere. The plane landed at Kennedy International Airport, where he was greeted by a family. This young boy was me.

I have grown up in a town where there were few Asians, so I stuck out in the crowd. I made friends quickly and they treated me just like anyone else. You may ask if anyone made fun of my appearance. Well, of course, I met that kind of person. I just shrugged it off.

As an adopted child, I have something that others don't have. I have had the benefit of two families. I'm lucky to have got a chance to start a new life. But we must try never to forget our past. Someday I will go back to Korea to find out what kind of culture I left behind.

There is only one thing that I regret about being adopted. When I argue with my parents and they realize they are losing the argument, they sometimes wonder what I would be doing if I were back in Korea. I don't understand this because I thought the purpose of adopting someone was to give them a better chance of growing up in a family. Some day when I am older, I want to adopt a girl and raise her the way my parents have raised me, but I would do it better, for I know what went well and what did not.

【1We learn that when the writer was on the way to his new family, ______.

    A. he was with his own parents

    B. he was very happy and excited

    C. he was about ten years old then

    A. is very good-looking

    B. is very kind-hearted

    C. is easily noticed by others

    D. is disliked by others

【3When the writer was made fun of by others, he _______.

    A. was deeply hurt

    B. wanted to go back to Korea

    C. didn’t care about it that much

    D. tried to make friends with them

【4】What does the writer want to do when he is older?

A Go back to live with his parents in Korea.

    B. Tell his parents what they have done wrong.

    C. Find out how to raise children in a better way.

    D. Adopt a girl and raise her in a good way.
