  • 21、On Monday, American ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson and her partner Jim Morrison reached the summit of 26,781-foot Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world. Soon after the 49-year-old Nelson began her descent(下降)on skis, she triggered small avalanche(雪崩)and was swept away. On Wednesday, Morrison found her body.

“Often times in life, people want to play it safe, and we make everything around us to be comfortable and safe,” ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson once said. “Therefore, we can make choices where you can see where that road is going to take you, and I've always been tending to make a choice that I don't know where it's going to take me.”

Nelson, a National Geographic Explorer, had a distinctive sense of travel that led her through more than 40 expeditions to 16 countries. In 2012, six years later, Nelson returned to Lhotse to become the first to ski from its summit.

She was deeply respected for both her extensive big-mountain experience, and her mindful approach to life's challenges. In 2018, Nelson was named captain of the North Face Athlete Team, a title only one other athlete has held. A National Geographic Society grantee, she was also one of the winners of the 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year award. Despite her many super-hero accomplishments, friends recall her as a thoughtful presence and quiet leader, someone who never sought the limelight.

Throughout her career, Nelson struggled at times with the expectations and limitations of being a woman, a mother, and a professional adventurer---and becoming a role model for younger generations of female athletes in the process. “Nelson paved the way for women in the adventure sports space with her refusal to choose between motherhood and her athletic career," says Emily Harrington, a climber who joined her on the Hkakabo Razi expedition. “ She followed her passion as well as raising her family with a mix of courage and grace in a way only a true leader could.”

【1】What happened to Hilaree Nelson according to paragraph 1?

A.She lost her life because of an avalanche.

B.She reached the summit of Manaslu alone.

C.She failed to find her partner and lost her life.

D.Her partner found her body a week after her death.

【2】Why did Nelson return to Lhotse in 2012?

    A.To explore the high mountain.

B.To meet with her partner Morrison.

C.To challenge herself to ski from its top.

D.To become the best woman explorer to ski.

【3】What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A.Courage of Nelson as a good adventurer.

B.Reasons for Nelson's love for adventures.

C.Hardships for Nelson to balance life and work.

D.The great achievements Nelson once achieved.

【4】Which of the following best describes Hilaree Nelson ?

    A.Careful and confident.

    B.Devoted and adventurous.

    C.Thoughtful and considerate.

    D.Creative and responsible.

  • 22、The garment (服装) industry is one of the largest carbon polluters on planet Earth, and one of the greatest producers of waste. Three out of five of the 100 billion garments made in 2018 ended up in landfill within a year. Toxic chemicals land in the environment and worker communities, and the production of cotton uses up vast amounts of water.

The business model of fast fashion has led to an enormous increase in the amounts of clothes that are produced, sold, and thrown. According to McKinsey, clothing production doubled from 2000 to 2014, and the average consumer buys 60% more garments each year. At the same time, these clothes are kept only half as long as they were a mere fifteen years ago.

About 100 billion items of clothing are produced each year; that’s nearly 14 items for every human being on the planet. Some of those never even reach the consumers; it caused a minor anger when in 2018 a luxury brand admitted to burning clothes just to protect the brand.

Yet, with clothes being so cheap, people do not wear at least 50 percent of their wardrobes, according to this study. The clothing and footwear industries together account for more than 8 percent of global climate influence, greater than all international airline flights and oceanic shipping trips combined. Water usage for growing cotton has led to huge lack of water, and coloring and treatment of garments make up 17%—20% of all industrial water pollution.

An industry that makes billions on the use of the planet does not suddenly become more sustainable (可持续的) when they start using organic cotton, or start burning their unsold goods (remember—people worked really hard for very little money on those clothes!) as a green fuel…

【1】What does the underlined word “Toxic” mean in paragraph 1?

    A.Colorful.

    B.Enormous.

    C.Beneficial.

    D.Poisonous.

【2】Why do people throw so many clothes away?

A.The new model clothing change too slowly.

    B.Some luxury clothes are cheap.

C.There are more new clothes every year.

D.They want to make full use of green fuel.

【3】What may garment waste influence least?

    A.Fishing.

    B.Climate.

    C.Transport.

    D.Agriculture.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.Clothing waste.

    B.Sources of pollution.

    C.The garment industry.

    D.Effects of environmental pollution.

  • 23、What we consume has a direct impact on our physical and mental well-being. Food is, after all, fuel, so it makes sense to eat foods that will nourish us and keep us slim.If you want to lose weight, here are some recommendations.

    # Broccoli

This is everyone’s favorite vegetable. Broccoli is high in fiber and calcium, making it an excellent weight-loss veggie. Broccoli is high in Vitamin C, which helps to speed up the fat-burning process and lower stress, making weight loss a breeze.

    # Carrots

When we wish to add something high in fiber and beta carotene to our diet, carrots and weight loss go hand in hand. Carrots can be found in salads, sandwiches, soups, and even fresh carrot juice.

The high fiber content aids bile secretion, which aids weight loss. It is a low-calorie vegetable that can be prepared in a variety of ways.

    # Bell Peppers

Have you ever tried all of the different colored bell peppers? If not, now is the time to start and improve your weight-loss routine. These vibrant meals are low-calorie vegetables high in vitamin C, which helps to regulate stress hormones.

Stress hinders weight loss by accumulating fat, but by including bell peppers in your diet, you can keep your hormones in check.

    # Potatoes

“When you lose weight, you don't eat potatoes.” For a long time, we believed in a myth.

When fried, potatoes are unhealthy, but when boiled or chilled, they are fat cutters and aid in the reduction of obstinate belly fat!

As vegetables that are low in calories but high in nutrients, potatoes are high in magnesium, which helps to avoid bloating and balance sodium levels in the body.

  • 24、Writing a book is a long and challenging process, but new technology is increasingly making it easier for authors to finish their books.

Michael Green, a US data scientist-turned-novelist, felt that technology could help him simplify the writing process when he was in the middle of writing his debut (首部) book.

He said that the process had become difficult to manage: “In the midst of editing, I got to the point where I started feeling like I had a lot of plots and characters,” he told the BBC.

“I had all these documents on the deeper aspects of the world I was creating. I was worried about being able to keep track of it all. That’s when I switched into my more data science-minded approach to solving a complex problem with a lot of different pieces.”

Green went on to create Lynit, a digital platform to help authors plan and weave together the many elements that form a story, such as themes, characters, and major events.

“As the author gets a new idea that they want to bring into the story, they are able to input it into a natural framework,” he told the BBC. “Piece by piece, they’re adding to the story. As new ideas come in, they change, maybe by creating new nodes (节点) or interactions, new relationships.”

Once the book has been published, technology is also playing an ever-increasing role in publicity and connecting with readers. Websites and apps from specialist firms allow authors to participate in live question-and-answer sessions with their audience.

Another tech firm, Crazy Maple Studios in California, US, offers authors four apps that can add music, animation, sound effects and in some cases, gameplay.

Michael Green believes technology will become even more important as a new generation of tech-savvy (精通技术的) writers becomes more well-known.

“What I’m finding with the Generation Z and even younger writers is that they’re looking for technology to give them guidance,” he told the BBC. “They see it as a tool to learn and grow with, rather than extra work.”

【1】What difficulty did Green face in writing his debut book?

A.He would leave out important plots.

B.He had trouble organizing his thoughts.

C.He often felt that he was not creative enough.

D.He was afraid the characters wouldn’t appeal to readers.

【2】What is an advantage of technology according to the text?

A.It creates new relationships for authors.

B.It can generate images based on words.

C.It can translate thoughts into sentences.

D.It brings authors closer to their readers.

【3】Crazy Maple Studio in California offers authors ________.

A.apps which help them add music, animation, sound effects even gameplay

B.a digital platform which helps them plan and weave together the elements

C.a digital platform which helps them participate in creating new nodes

D.apps which help them organise a lot of plots and characters

【4】Which of the following would Green most probably agree with?

A.Technology adds to the burden of authors.

B.New technology matters to growing authors.

C.Young writers rely too heavily on technology.

D.New technology gets in the way of creativity.
