二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Children are naturally curious about the world around them. When Chase Hansen was only 4 years old, he encountered homeless people for the first time while shopping with his dad at an outdoor mall in Salt Lake City, Nevada.   It’s no wonder that he had a lot of questions.

“Chase looked at me and said, ‘Dad, who are these people? Why don’t they have a place to stay?’” John Hansen recalled. “After I explained that they had run into hard times and were homeless, I knew that we were looking at an educational opportunity. My son wanted to help them.”

The father and son convinced a local Jamba Juice store to donate more than 100 smoothies(果汁)and the pair gave them out to homeless people in a park.

After that, they came up with an even better idea. “I wanted a way to get to know people better, “Chase said. ”So, my dad and I decided to start taking some of the homeless people we’d met out to lunch.

“A lot of people walk right past homeless people and don’t see the person,” he said. “I know now that they’re people just like us. They want to make a connection and not feel so alone in the world.”

Hundreds of lunches later, they run a self-funded charity called Project Empathy(同情)to help inspire others to meet and to create relationships with the homeless people in their neighborhoods. The organization provides a list of resources that can help homeless people with food, housing and employment.

John said that what started as a way to spend quality time with his son has turned into a passion for both of them. “Chase and I realized that the country needed an army of people to practice empathy, and that by doing something as simple as taking a homeless person to lunch, we could maybe inspire others to do the same, ”he said. “Any time you can help to give someone a voice, it’s empowering.

  • 22、   When we think of animals and plants, we have a pretty good way of dividing them into two distinct groups: one converts sunlight into energy and the other has to eat food to make its energy. Well, those dividing lines come crashing down with the discovery of a sea slug(海蛞蝓) that's truly half animal and half plant. It's pretty incredible how it has managed to hijack the genes of the algae(藻类)on which it feeds.

And so far, this green sea slug is the only known animal that can be truly considered solar-powered, although some animals do exhibit some plant-like behaviors. Many scientists have studied the green sea slugs to confirm that they are actually able to create energy from sunlight.

In fact, the slugs use the genetic material so well that they pass it on to their future generations. Their babies retain the ability to manufacture their own chlorophyll, though they can't generate energy from sunlight until they've eaten enough algae to steal the necessary genes, which they can't yet produce on their own.

“There's no way on earth that genes from an alga should work inside an animal cell,” says Sidney Pierce from the University of South Florida.

The sea slugs are so good at gathering energy from the sun that they can live up to nine months without having to eat any food. They get all their nutritional needs met by the genes that they've hijacked from the algae.

【1】What is the distinctive feature of a sea slug?

A.It gets energy from both food and sunlight.

B.It lives half on animals and half on plants.

C.It converts some sea animals into plants

D.It looks like both a plant and an animal.

【2】What does the underlined word"manufacture" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.invent

    B.capture

    C.manipulate

    D.produce

【3】What does Sidney Pierce say about genes from an alga?

A.They are stolen from animals like the sea slug.

B.They don't usually function inside animal cells.

C.They can readily be converted to sea slug genes.

D.They can't function unless exposed to sunlight.

【4】What do we learn about sea slugs from the passage?

A.They will starve to death without sunlight.

B.They behave the way most plant species do.

C.They can survive for months without eating.

D.They will turn into plants when they mature.

  • 23、There are billions of people on this planet, and many of us love to eat meat. Can the demand be filled in a sustainable(可持续的) and affordable way? A bunch of businessmen are not only optimistic but are working to make this happen sooner than you may think.

The environmental effects caused by meat consumption (食用)—waste, animal treatment, health problems and even the greenhouse gas effects that are potentially caused by methane gas produced by cows—have given rise to a number of startups(新兴公司)looking to develop meats in different ways.

For example, San Francisco-based Memphis Meats is developing cell-based meats in its labs without requiring any animals. Israel’s Future Meat Technologies is doing the same by producing fat and muscle cells that are being tested by chefs in Jerusalem. All of these companies use special processes to harvest cells from animals and grow them in a lab.

But don’t worry if you’re not a meat lover. Startups such as Jet Eat, which is also based in Israel, are working on food products grown in labs that are plant-based and replicate (复制) meats using natural elements while still keeping flavor, consistency and the “overall sensory experience”, according to a report on NoCamels. Jet Eat, which was founded in early 2018, aims to 3D-print their lab-grown products by 2020.

As you can imagine, there are plenty of barriers facing the industry. Educating the public is a big one. Another controversial issue is the labeling of the products. Recently both the USDA and the Food and Drug Administration(FDA) announced that they will begin jointly controlling the new “cell-based meat” category.

Many of us have concerns about the challenges facing future generations as our global population increases and the earth’s natural resources decreases. The good news is that there are plenty of businessmen around the world—like those producing lab-grown meats—who are working to solve some of these problems and make a little money in the process. Nothing wrong with that.

【1】Why do some companies begin to develop new kinds of meats?

A.To analyse the causes of air pollution.

B.To stress the importance of protecting wild animals.

C.To make people less interested in eating meat and more healthy.

D.To meet people’s demand for meat in environmentally friendly ways.

【2】What’s special about the lab-grown meats of Jet Eat?

    A.They cost less.

    B.They are plant-based.

    C.They are more delicious.

D.They are available on the market now.

【3】Which of the following is a barrier lab-grown meat industries must deal with?

A.How to let people accept the meat.

B.How to give the meat an elegant name.

C.How to produce the meat in large amounts.

D.How to reduce the cost of making the meat.

    【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards lab-grown meats?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Opposing.

    C.Ambiguous.

    D.Cautious.

The postcard would fall back to earth gently due to the parachute, but it's not known how many of these postcards ever made it to their intended addresses.

19th-century elevators are still in operation

Two of the original elevator cars are still functioning in the Eiffel Tower elevators that go to the third floor in the east and west pillars (铁柱).The equipment has been updated, but it is basically the same technology that was used more than a century ago.

When I was eight, my mom was very sick and very sad, and there was nothing my dad could do to cheer her up. I made her a get-well-soon card, but that didn’t work either. All she said was, “There are no roses...”

I knew what she was talking about. Not long ago, we lived in a much bigger house, with a large garden full of roses, roses everywhere. Mom loved roses very much. We lived in that house all my life, then when I was six, things went very wrong. Dad’s business crashed, and even though he managed to save the company, he had to fire two-thirds of his staff, and we had to sell the big house.

We moved into a smaller house in front of which the earth was dry. The minute she saw it, Mom hated it. “It will be great,” Dad comforted her cheerfully. “I’ll paint the house on the weekends, and you’ll plant your roses!” “Yes,” Mom said, forcing a smile. But we could see she was not a bit excited.

“Oh, look. Mom! The neighbor has roses!” I screamed, pointing to the garden next door with thousands of flowers. “That means you can grow roses too!” But Mom wasn’t feeling well, and she didn’t have the energy to start a new garden.

I sat in our new yard and stared at the neighbor’s garden. My neighbor, a kind granny, was out among the roses, wearing a huge hat. She saw me and asked, “What are you doing, looking at my roses?”

“I was just looking,” I replied, “They’re really beautiful! My mom used to have roses. But my mom is seriously ill now, and she is very sad because she misses her roses.”

“I am so sorry to hear that. But I know you are a good boy. You can pick as many as possible if the flowers can offer your mom some relief. I hugged granny for her generosity.

The next morning, when the sun rose, everything was ready. I sat on the floor in a corner of my mom’s bedroom and waited for her to wake up.
