21、 Winters were bitterly cold in my memory. You had to bundle up just to keep warm when you went outside. You were often cold, wet, slip on the ice, and you’d arrive home to an ice-cold house. And that would mean turning on the heating and waiting. It’s a miracle you didn’t get cold to the bone.
Fortunately, things don’t have to be so challenging any more. Technology, engineering and design have advanced, giving us new solutions to old problems. It means dealing with winter needn’t be like skating on thin ice.
With a smart thermostat (温度自动调节器), our homes can be warm when we need them to be. Many models feature smartphone apps that allow you to control temperature remotely, so we can warm up the house before we arrive home. According to techradar.com, Tado’s model features voice control, while the Nest “knows” your habits and automatically heats the home for you.
Clothes have been given an upgrade, too. Electronic thermal jackets, sweaters and coats heat up when you turn them on. At the touch of a button, or through an app on our phones, the clothing produces heat from the equipment placed inside. Many models offer three levels of heating which stay warm for over 12 hours.
Finally, there is the clothing for the head, Beanies and Earmuff, which feature speakers included in the fabric using Bluetooth technology so we can listen to our favourite music or, in some cases, have a phone call using the in-built microphone. All keep the head warm while avoiding a cold.
For many, the thought of winter used to be enough to make their blood run cold. But using technology, life needn’t freeze up. With the right solutions, there’s no reason why winter can’t be really, really cool.

22、When our family drove to our hotel on the night of 29 September, 1994, I prayed I would never be in such a bleak place. The streets were deserted, and we were leaving the hospital where our seven-year-old son lay in a deep unconsciousness. We wanted only to go home, to take Nicholas with us and to hold his hand again. It had been the worst night of our lives. In lives that only a few hours before had been full of warmth and laughter, there was now a total emptiness.
Within days, our personal experience turned into a worldwide story. Newspapers and television told of the shooting attack by car robbers, Nicholas’s death and our decision to donate his organs. Since then, many streets, schools and hospitals in Italy have been named after him.
All this is for a decision—we’ve forgotten which of us suggested it. I remember the silent room and the doctors, hesitant to ask questions about organ donation. “Now that he’s gone, shouldn’t we donate the organs?” one of us asked. “Yes,” the other replied.
Nicholas was dead. The future of a bright little creature had been taken away. It was important to us that someone else should have that future. It turned out to be seven people’s future, most of them young, most very sick.
We are pleased this incident has caused organ donation rates to increase dramatically in Italy—a result called the “Nicholas effect”. It seems unfair, however, to the thousands of parents who have made exactly the same decision. Their loss is no different from ours, but their willingness to share has remained largely unrecognized.
For them, like us, the emptiness is always close by. I don’t believe we will ever be really happy again. But our joy in seeing the life that would otherwise have been lost is so uplifting that it has given us some comfort for what would have been just an act of violence.
【1】What does the underlined word “bleak” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Encouraging.
B.Hopeless.
C.Attractive.
D.Annoying
【2】What led to Nicholas’s death?
A.A gun attack.
B.A street fight.
C.A car accident.
D.A serious illness.
【3】Why did Nicholas’s parents decide to donate their son’s organs?
A.They chose to take the doctors’ advice.
B.They wished to increase donation rates.
C.They attempted to attract the public’s attention.
D.They wanted to give others a second chance at life.
【4】What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?
A.Italy witnesses a sharp decrease in violence.
B.The parents have completely got rid of their sadness.
C.Their decision has encouraged public organ donation in Italy.
D.Other contributors think it is unfair not to be recognized.
23、It’s normal to quarrel with a partner, but how do you make up afterward? 【1】 Give your partner positive attention and show that you’re willing to make changes for the benefit of your relationship.
Acknowledge your role in the argument.
Recognize that regardless of what the quarrel was about, you played a role in it. 【2】 For example, you may have shouted at your partner or talked over them when they needed you to listen. You can say, “I made assumptions without hearing you out first. I didn’t listen to you, and I admit that was wrong of me.”
Deal with your anger.
Quarrels often lead to anger and upset. 【3】 Think about what causes your anger and try and see the big picture. Journal your feelings to help you explore them and understand them better. For example, if you’re upset that your partner didn’t tell you the truth, write about your experience and how it made you feel. You might discover that your anger is really about feeling ignored or wanting more attention.
【4】
Express your regret for doing it. Show empathy (同理心) by acknowledging their emotions and how you are impacting them. Definitely, say “I’m sorry” so that your partner knows you are sincerely apologizing for your wrongdoing. For example, say, “I’m sorry I screamed at you. I know it makes you feel disrespected, so I apologize.” Forgive your partner.
Tell your partner that you forgive them and let them know that you are letting go of grudges (嫌隙) and leaving the past in the past. It’s also a way to release your negative emotions and choose a new beginning. 【5】
A.Put the relationship first.
B.Apologize for your wrongdoing.
C.Be humble and admit where you went wrong.
D.Avoid letting the argument extend into a new day.
E.Forgiveness doesn’t happen all at once, it’s a process.
F.It’s important to be mature in how you handle a quarrel.
G.Take steps to help calm your anger, such as deep breathing.
