二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、I was always a reader. As a kid, I walked to the library several times a week and stayed up late reading with a torch. I did my undergraduate degree in English and went on to get a master’s in literature. When I created my online profile, I made my screen name “missbibliophile”. Filling out the “favorite books” section, I let my taste in literature speak for me: One Hundred Years of Solitude, A Moveable Feast, White Teeth, The Namesake, The Known World.

But I realized it had been more than two years since I had read most of those titles. I had stopped reading gradually, the way one heals or dies.

David was my online friend. His profile said he liked to read, so I asked him about his last book. His face lit up and his fingers danced. I told him I only read one book that year. “But it’s June. Read a book!” he said.

I was painfully aware of the glaring hypocrisy (虚伪) in my life. I defended the virtues of bookstores in the age of online retailing and bought books, and they sat on every surface until my house appeared to wear books the way one wears clothes.

His suggestion on “reading a book” echoed in my head. One afternoon, I picked up one I’d bought only for its poetic title. I had a hard time getting into it. Whenever I was tempted to give up on it, I thought of David. I pushed through the first two chapters and discovered a new narrator and I loved the alternating points of view. I read at lunch and on my walk home, occasionally lifting my eyes to avoid strangers and uneven road surface. I stayed up late and finished the book.

I felt great and proud of myself. The last time I’d pulled an all-nighter to read, I was 12. I felt him pushing me to be more of the person I used to be and more of who I wanted to be.

【1】Why did the author purposely list many classics in her profile?

    A.To show her taste.

    B.To list books read.

    C.To fill out the form.

    D.To indicate her ability.

【2】How much do we know about David?

    A.He is interested in dancing.

    B.He is excited about books.

C.He is curious about the Internet.

    D.He is patient with strangers.

【3】How did the author try to appear fond of reading?

    A.By refusing online books.

B.By decorating her house with books.

    C.By wandering about bookstores.

    D.By constantly buying different books.

【4】Why did the author feel proud of herself?

    A.She stayed up all night.

    B.She finished reading a book.

    C.She regained passion for books.

    D.David pushed her to read.

  • 22、   There are many kinds of book clubs where members discuss a different book every month. What about dinner clubs, where people get together once a month or four times a year to make and eat dinner? In the dinner club that I joined, the hostess of the dinner club would prepare a big dinner first. Then the members would begin discussing the food. 【1】.

There are two variations of a dinner club. One has a group of people who try a different restaurant once a month. 【2】. When they all meet, they order and share different dishes. This is a great idea, especially if you live in a big city where there are hundreds of different restaurants.

【3】. One way is to have the hostess for the month decide on a type of food. The hostess is responsible for cooking the entrees. The other members make different courses at home, like salad and dessert, and bring them to the dinner club. For an even more exciting and interactive type of dinner clubs, the entire group comes together in the hostess’ kitchen. 【4】. In this way the members of the group not only learn about different types of food, but also different methods of cooking.

The great thing about a dinner club is that it serves in many different ways. 【5】. Couples can get together for some food and great conversations. A stay-at-home mother can get a couple of other stay-at-home mothers together and start a children's lunch club. If you have a group of friends that love to get together and experiment with different types of food, the possibilities are endless!

A.Now, let's talk about our dinner club

B.This was the beginning of our dinner club

C.They prepare the entire meal in a group effort

D.Usually one member decides on the restaurant

E.The other kind of dinner clubs has many different forms

F.It offers regular well-organized social events in selected places

G.You can make the dinner club even more special one month by inviting partners

  • 23、Whether you are at Disneyland or another Disney park, you will usually find a nighttime show that will be showing.

【1】. Read this article to find out how you can get a good seat for an evening event at any Disney park.

●Plan on seeing the show in advance.

Usually, if you decide an hour beforehand that you’re going to see a show, you will likely end up not getting a good seat, unless the park is not very busy.【2】, or at least the day before.

    ●Do your research.

Research online: “The best places to view...”. 【3】 Some of them may even be less known, so you may not deal with such a big crowd.

    【4】.

In order to get a good spot, plan on arriving an hour before the event. Possibly even earlier if the park is more crowded on that day. If you arrive ten minutes before the event starts, you’re a lot less likely to get a good spot.

    ●Stay in the same area.

【5】, make sure that it’s extremely quick, and try to have another member of your party stay in your spot while you are away.

A.If you must leave to do something

B.Enjoy the show with a friend

C.It’s usually much more enjoyable if you can get a good seat

D.This is especially important if you arrive closer to the event time

    E.Arrive to the event early

F.Therefore, look at the schedule before your trip

G.You’ll see a list of places in the park that are the best for viewing that event.

  • 24、Automated systems make it easier for the pilots to control the planes. But they are also causing problems.

The challenge of what engineers call the “human-machine interface” has tragically gained attention after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 on Match 10th.Eyewitnesses reported that shortly after departing Addis Ababay, the aircraft climbed and dived repeatedly. The pilots of Boeing 737 MAX 8 struggled with an automated safety system that falsely tried to prevent the aircraft from losing speed by lowering its nose.

Although authorities around the world have forbidden the model to fly. Boeing insists that it is fit to fly. The company is updating the MAX’s automated flight-control software to make it easier for pilots to assume manual control. Boeing and Airbus both pack their planes with computers that do most of the flying.

Incidents are not limited to aviation. In Wastington D.C. automated trains have largely been out of service since 2009, when a faulty electric line made a stopped train invisible to the safety system on the one behind it. A series of accidents involving self-driving cars may have been caused by sensors’ failure to recognize objects in the road, and drivers’ failing to respond fast enough.

Studies have shown that when people must regain control from an automated system, it can take them around five seconds to grasp what is happening. The boredom of monitoring a semi-automated vehicle may reduce attention by causing “passive” tiredness. Such concerns have led some carmakers, Ford among them, to consider skipping semi-automation and go straight to full autonomy. That would remove the human-machine interface — but not humans’ machine-induced fears.

【1】What made the plane, Boeing 737 MAX 8, rise and fall several times?

    A.The pilots’ wrong control.

B.The falling of the plane’s nose.

    C.The human-machine interface.

    D.The safety system’s incorrect measures.

【2】Why did the Boeing company renew the flight control software?

A.To do a test on the plane.

B.To help the plane to fly again.

C.To compete with the other company, Airbus.

D.To make it easier for the pilots to get back the control power.

【3】Why did some companies consider getting rid of the human-machine interface?

A.To avoid the disadvantages of mankind in operating machines.

B.To reduce the dullness of watching machines.

C.To follow the future trend of machine controlling.

D.To help people to overcome the fears for machines.

【4】What does the underlined word “That” refer to in the last paragraph?

    A.The carmaker, Ford.

    B.Fully automatic machines.

    C.The tiredness of driving.

    D.Monitoring the machines.
